Sony reckon that ‘phones allow more complex games than Angry Birds’

Sony Ericsson’s UK marketing boss, David Hilton, has argued that consumers don’t want to play with “fingers all over the screen,” and would rather have “the sort of interfaces you have on your games console.”

“The main thing is to offer something different,” he said. “iPhone is a hugely popular product and Angry Birds on iPhone is a delight. But now the hardware allows you to play far more complex games.”

“You don’t want to be playing these with your fingers all over the screen. You want full visibility and the ability to control the games with the sort of interfaces you have on your games console.”

Hilton said the Xperia Play will target neither casual or hardcore gamers, but “a group of about 9m people in-between”.

Asked if we’ll see more PlayStation phones in the future, Hilton said: “We will see how this one goes but there is the potential for this to grow.”
