Spider-Man PS4 Almost Didn’t Have Spider-Cop Banter

The game's creative director initially wasn't sure about Spider-Cop, but agreed to give it a try.

Spider-Man has been a huge success, both commercially and critically. One of the the great things about the game is just how full of personality it is, in every area of the experience, which includes the writing. Not all of Spider-Man’s quips and jokes land, but he’s portrayed faithfully, and a lot of his banter with a lot of characters is written surprisingly well. One example of that is his ongoing “Spider-Cop” schtick with Yuri. A lot of people have fallen in love with the Spider-Cop persona, but it turns out that this was almost not a part of the game.

The game’s creative director Bryan Intihar explained to Kinda Funny Games how he initially wasn’t convinced whether Spider-Cop should be in the game, because he thought it may not work and that it was “too much.” It was one of the writers on the team who had suggested the idea, and when Intihar agreed to see what it would look like, the whole team ended up falling in love with it, and it was then added to the game as a “fun and memorable moment.”

Regardless of whether you  liked Spider-Cop, or thought it was really was, maybe, “too much”, these sections still gave us some insight into Spidey’s relationship with Yuri Watanabe, among other things, so I think it was worth it overall. What did you think of Spider-Cop and his shenanigans? Let us know in the comments.
