Super Mario Maker 2 Clip Shows Three Distinct Eras of the Platforming Franchise

The Showa, Heisei, and Reiwa eras of Super Mario.

In celebration of the beginning of the Reiwa Era in Japan today, Nintendo have released a new clip from the upcoming platformer (or creation toolset- whatever suits your fancy), Super Mario Maker 2. The clips shows three distinct eras from the Super Mario platformer franchise, used to make sections of a level in the upcoming Super Mario Maker 2.

The first segment shows assets and backgrounds from Super Mario Bros. as the Showa Era of Mario, the second segment shows off the Heisei Era of Super Mario World, while the third and final segment shows the new era of Mario, the Reiwa Era of Super Mario 3D World– with the latter, as we know, being newly introduced to Mario Maker.

Not only is it a pretty cool clip celebrating the Japanese landmark date with a fun look back at Mario through the ages, it also shows gameplay from Mario Maker 2 itself, the 3D World parts of which are definitely interesting to look at and glean new information from. Take a look below.

Super Mario Maker 2 is out on June 28, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch. Recently, Nintendo said that the game would introduce many different new mechanics, and that it would also be taking full advantage of the Switch’s unique hardware features, while also confirming that pre-orders would be shipping with custom stylus.
