With the Nintendo Switch approaching the end of its active lifecycle, no one would have expected 2023 to be as active for the console in terms of major new releases as it turned out to be, and though the likes of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Super Mario Bros. Wonder were surely the show-stealers, other, relatively smaller titles like Super Mario RPG’s remake also added their fair share of value.
In fact, the remake has turned out to be quite success for Nintendo, to no one’s surprise. Reflecting its critical acclaim, as announced by Nintendo in its latest quarterly fiscal report, Super Mario RPG has sold 3.14 million units worldwide as of December 31, 2023.
Incidentally, that also means that the remake has already moved way past the lifetime sales of the original SNES title, Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, which sold 2.14 million units in its lifetime. Given the fact that the remake only launched for the Switch more than halfway through November, that’s an impressive milestone to reach in under six weeks- though it is, of course, a Mario game.
Meanwhile, Super Mario Bros. Wonder has sold 11.96 million units worldwide, while The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom sits at 20.28 million copies. On the hardware front, the Nintendo Switch has surpassed 139 million units sold.
