The Nintendo Switch added what may very well be the best game of its stellar library last year with The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, which was met with universal acclaim, with many even considering it to be an improvement on its landmark predecessor, Breath of the Wild. Unsurprisingly, its critical acclaim is being in its commercial success.
As of December 31, 2023, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has sold 20.28 million units worldwide, Nintendo has announced as part of its recent quarterly earnings report. That’s up from 19.5 million units in early November, with the game currently ranking as the ninth-highest selling first party Switch game to date. In comparison, its predecessor, the aforementioned Breath of the Wild, currently sits at 31.61 million units sold.
In our review of the game, we awarded it a score of 10/10, saying, “Tears of the Kingdom ups the ante on its predecessor, and follows up on one of the greatest games ever made by exceeding it in every possible regard to a thorough, comprehensive degree. If you are a fan of the medium, you owe it to yourself to play this game.” Read the full review through here.
Nintendo has also announced updates sales figures for Super Mario Bros. Wonder and Super Mario RPG, and confirmed that the Switch has surpassed 139 million units sold worldwide.
