Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Players Experiencing Save Corrupting Glitch Following Piranha Plant Arrival

Piranha Plant is so deadly he can destroy your saves.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s first DLC character (and also perhaps the weirdest character in the entire roster, which is saying a lot), Piranha Plant, was added to the game as part of yesterday’s update. But apparently his introduction hasn’t been the smoothest, and players have been experiencing a deadly save glitch that corrupts all their data.

As fan page @SSBUNews points out on Twitter, several players have been reporting that playing as Piranha Plant in the game’s All-Stars Mode (which sees you taking on all other unlocked characters one after the other with the character you’re playing as) has been resulting in corrupting saves. That means loss of all data, from World of Light, to unlocked Spirits, to unlocked characters, and everything else. Considering how many hours countless people have doubtless put into the game already, that’s a pretty bad situation.

Of course, those with Nintendo Switch Online accounts have a fail-safe, as a subscription to the service enables cloud saves as well, which means their Smash data will have been backed up. But for the players that haven’t purchased a Nintendo Switch Online subscription, there is no such fallback.

Nintendo hasn’t yet commented on the issue, but until such time a fix is released, it’s probably a good idea to stay out of All-Stars mode (at least with Piranha Plant).

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is out now exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
