Supermassive Games Will Reportedly Lay off About 90 Employees

The studio confirmed it's entering "a period of consultation, which we anticipate will result in the loss of some of our colleagues."

The Quarry and The Dark Pictures Anthology studio Supermassive Games is the latest developer to suffer layoffs. In a new report by Bloomberg, the developer revealed to staff that 150 employees are “at risk” of redundancy. Roughly 90 staff members will be laid off, with an email informing employees earlier today.

In an official statement on Twitter, the company revealed plans to reorganize, leading to “a period of consultation, which we anticipate will result in the loss of some of our colleagues.” It’s currently “committed to focusing our efforts on our core strengths and upcoming titles to ensure the continued sustainability of the company.” The official number of layoffs wasn’t revealed.

Supermassive Games is currently working on three projects. Little Nightmares 3 is out this year for all platforms and is follow-up to Tarsier Studios’ horror platforming series. The Casting of Frank Stone is a single-player narrative spin-off of Behavior Interactive’s Dead by Daylight for PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC.

It’s also working on the Season 2 premiere of The Dark Pictures Anthology, Directive 8020, though there have been no details regarding release window or platforms. The layoffs are currently the latest to hit the games industry this year, following the likes of Activision Blizzard, Visual Concepts, Black Forest Games, and more.
