Switch Sales Rise and Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Holds Steady in New Media Create Report

Red Dead’s legs in Japan have nothing on Call of Duty: Black Ops 4’s long term performance.

It’s Wednesday, which means it is time for the latest Media Create report, covering video game hardware and software sales in Japan. On the software front, there’s not much going on that’s particularly interesting. Though Red Dead Redemption 2 took the top spot last week following its debut, this week it cedes the top spot back to Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, instead falling to the second position itself.

The interesting thing here about these two western games is that Call of Duty is exhibiting far better legs in Japan than Red Dead is—I assume a lot of this has to do with Call of Duty’s intrinsic popularity as a multiplayer game, which Red Dead Redemption 2 currently can’t match.

Elsewhere on the software front, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Super Mario Odyssey, and Splatoon 2 all do well. On the hardware side of things, Nintendo Switch tops the charts again. Curiously enough, its sales last week were up over the previous week, even in the absence of any new game releases to buoy it. PS4 comes in second place, but it is already down to sub-20,000 units, indicating that the effects of the PS4 Pro price drop may have been very temporary. As always, 3DS rounds out the top three.

You can check out the full charts below.
