You’re going to go to Avalon, where there are no loadouts and all of your killing tools must be scavenged off the bodies of your enemies. It’s a massive place with an ever-shrinking boundary in which your squad of four must fight for every inch of ground you gain against no less than 25 other teams.

Your loadout is dependent on what you’re able to find, but upgrading gear is shaping up to be quite seamless, per this deep dive on the official website for those who want the full rundown of what this one brings to the table. The short version is that your weapons come with unique Archetypes, and finding one you like lets you upgrade it via Attachment Kits, improving on its rarity with apparently immediate effects. You’re going to need every advantage you can get as your opponents are going to come at you on land, from the air, and even from the water, depending on the vehicles they’re able to gain access to.

Of course, the same goes for you and your team. It’s a free-for-all with a lot of cool stuff, and it should keep Call of Duty: Warzone fans occupied for hours. Blackout players will find a lot of familiar tools like the Sensor Dart, Trauma Kit, Grappling Hook, and the return of the Perk System, albeit in a streamlined form.

“The rumor factory working overtime. This ain’t it,” it said succinctly.

The title would allegedly launch alongside a “traditional” Call of Duty multiplayer title and the next Xbox, which is reportedly targeting next year if everything goes according to plan. If this sounds familiar, it’s because Activision did something similar with Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare and Modern Warfare Remastered launching on the same day (and the latter being a tied to the former).

It all sounds well and good, but the keyword here is “floated.” It doesn’t necessarily mean that a separate Zombies title is in development (or has even been greenlit). Microsoft and Activision have been fairly tight-lipped about the next game in the series, simply committing to no longer releasing back-to-back Black Ops and Modern Warfare titles. Which you can thank the negative reception of Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 for.

In the meantime, the latest entry in the franchise continues to receive updates and isn’t suffering too greatly in sales. It topped US software sales charts for January 2026, despite its Steam player base dropping to historic new lows in the same month. How Activision can reignite interest in the franchise remains to be seen, but maybe it will return with a vengeance, as former Blizzard Entertainment president Mike Ybarra believes. Time will tell.

The original plan was to seemingly launch on the new console alongside Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto 6 and compete with the game for player attention. However, with the console itself rumored to be delayed thanks to global memory shortages, new plans have apparently been drawn up that revolve around two separate Call of Duty games being made for the next Xbox. Comparisons were drawn with the release of Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered. This also indicates that we might see a standalone release of the franchise’s Zombies mode alongside a standard multiplayer release.

“Sources indicate to me that the delay on the next Xbox has ‘hurt’ a lot of COD’s marketing plans as they wanted Modern Warfare 4 to be a launch title and draw a lot of hype to compete with people’s attention alongside GTA VI,” wrote the leaker on social media.

“Because of this delay, the idea of two Call of Duty games launching with the next Xbox has been floated. A traditional Call of Duty multiplayer and a standalone Zombies title presumably developed by Treyarch. Likely similar to that of Infinite Warfare and Modern Warfare Remastered were both released together.”

As for Activision’s wider business plans, the leaker has also reported that Microsoft wants the company to be “more agile”, and less devoted to its yearly release schedule for the Call of Duty franchise. In terms of software development, being agile means having a clearly-defined project development pipeline that can quickly pivot to new ideas. This, according to TheGhostOfHope, would have apparently allowed Activision to have a more competent version of the Call of Duty: DMZ mode to cash in on the hype around extraction shooters than what we ultimately got.

“Microsoft wants Activision to be more agile and less attached to annualized releases in the future. The consensus is that a more quick and coherent product/development pipeline would have allowed them to cash in on the extraction shooter hype sooner with a DMZ update for example.”

It is worth noting that, going by other rumors surrounding next-generation consoles, the timelines don’t quite match up precisely. Before RAM prices skyrocketed, leading to several hardware delays, reports had indicated that Sony and Microsoft were eyeing a 2027 launch for their respective next-gen consoles. Considering previous PlayStations and Xboxes having come out in Winter, in time for the Holiday season, it is likely that even the PS6 and next Xbox would have come out around November in 2027, which would have been a full year after the initial launch of Grand Theft Auto 6—out on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S on November 19th this year. The leaker could, however, be referring to the next-gen launch of GTA 6.

Activision had also announced back in December that it was moving away from back-to-back releases for sub-series in the overarching Call of Duty franchise. This means that, with Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 being the latest game, the next one wouldn’t be from the Black Ops series. Similarly, the next Modern Warfare won’t be followed by another one.

However, the latter serves as the MVP when it comes to overall hardware spending. At $248 million, it’s up 16 percent over the previous year, which was enough to offset declining sales for the PS5, Xbox Series X/S and Switch 1. The fact that it achieved this while ranking second in dollar and unit sales is equally impressive.

The only new game release was Bandai Namco’s Code Vein 2, which reached 11th in the overall charts. However, it topped the PC sales chart that considered all storefronts. Perhaps even more surprising is that Final Fantasy 7 Remake re-entered the top ten charts, going from 225th place in December 2025 to ninth, thanks to its Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch 2 ports.

If that’s not a good sign that Square Enix made the right move to go multiplatform with the trilogy, we don’t know what is. The next entry, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, is out on June 3rd for both platforms.

It’s been a good two years for the title that aimed to bring the Call of Duty experience to its players’ smartphones, but it was only a matter of time before the curtain came down on the game. Despite its Android version drawing users’ ire due to various issues, the game has managed its fair share of praise. However, it seemingly didn’t gather enough traction for Activision to justify creating more content for it, which brings us to now.

In a statement, Activision showed appreciation for the developers behind the experience and its players alike, whilst assuring its community that seasonal content is still being made for Call of Duty: Mobile.

“The servers for Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile will go offline on April 17, 2026, after which the game will no longer be available for play. Until that time, players may continue to access the game and engage with existing content…Player passion and feedback continue to shape the future of the Call of Duty franchise, and we look forward to delivering meaningful seasonal content and updates to Call of Duty: Mobile.”

Or you could switch over to Call of Duty: Mobile – surely that won’t kick the bucket anytime soon, right? It’s your call at the moment, but the clock is ticking until April.

The post is a the latest iteration of the Xbox Excellence Awards, which was created last year to celebrate how players engaged with various releases on Xbox. The Store Rating category lists 2025 games with the best ratings on the Microsoft Store, with an added requirement of the title having at least 500 ratings. Player Engagements is about the average number of hours spent on a game by each player within the first six weeks of a game’s release. Daily Active Users celebrates titles, expansions or updates with the highest single-day active users throughout the year. And finally Units Sold is fairly self-explanatory.

Going down the lists, you’ll find many of the biggest releases of the year, from ARC Raiders and Battlefield 6, as well as award-winning RPG Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Indie titles have also been well-represented, with games like Crime Scene Cleaner and Satisfactory making it into the lists. There also doesn’t seem to have been a singular genre to dominate the lists, since everything from sports games like EA Sports Madden NFL 26, to fantasy adventure life sims like Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time, and even fighting games like Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics are well represented.

Curiously, none of the games was present in all four of the categories. At most, we got to see titles like Borderlands 4 being able to make it on to three of them: Player Engagement, Daily Active Users and Units Sold. Even ARC Raiders, which has seen quite a bit of success, is only on the Units Sold and Daily Active Users lists.

Microsoft has also emphasized that the lists represent a diverse collection of games developed by studios of varying sizes. All in all, it represents 48 unique developers based out of 13 countries, with 24 publishers having had a hand in their release. 19 of the games were self-published. “Taken as a whole, it’s an encapsulation of development on Xbox – we want gaming to reach you wherever you are, and for the teams making those games to find you from wherever they are,” wrote the company.

Taking a closer look at software sales for the month of December, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 took the lead, with Battlefield 6 being ranked third. Other titles in the best-seller charts for the month are a mix of newer games like Donkey Kong Bananza and older titles like Grand Theft Auto 5, Minecraft and Red Dead Redemption 2.

While other console makers might have started struggling with console sales last year, Nintendo has been doing quite well with the release of the Switch 2. Piscatella had confirmed, the Switch 2 ended up being the best-selling console of the year in the US, with the country accounting for 4.4 million units. Along with this, the new console is also noted as selling faster than the original Switch from back in 2017.

As he noted, the Switch 2’s hardware sales single-handedly managed to offset industry-wide downward trends in console hardware sales. Sony’s PS5 ranked second for the period. The Switch 2 has also been described by Piscatella as being the “fastest selling video game console hardware platform” in history so far.

While things might be going well for Nintendo for the time being, research firm Niko Partners has predicted that the company will end up raising the price of the Switch 2 thanks to the worldwide memory shortages affecting manufacturing. The firm noted that, while the Switch 2 is priced competitively when compared to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo might have to bring its latest console in line with its competitors to maintain profitability.

In the meantime, Battlefield Studios has been working hard on creating and testing more content for the upcoming second season of Battlefield 6. While it hasn’t yet revealed too many details aside from its February 17 launch date, the developers provided a few hints about what kind of content we can expect when Season 2 of Battlefield 6 is kicked off.

Among the new content coming to the game is a brand new map, dubbed Contagion, that will also feature its own unique gameplay mechanics. No details have been provided about these mechanics, aside from vague hints about players needing to use equipment to interact with them, a soldier wearing a gas mask in the teaser trailer, and the fact that the map’s name implies some sort of contagious infection will be involved.

According to GameFile, Kotick has recently filed a response, with his lawyers denying this allegation. Rather, Kotick and his lawyers are now alleging that Sjunde AP-Fonden filed its lawsuit “to exert collateral harm on Activision” and help Embracer Group.

“This Delaware lawsuit was apparently aimed to help pave the way for Embracer to increase its foothold in the California market at the expense of Activision, making it more difficult for Activision to recruit talent and expand through [mergers and acquisitions] activity of the sort that Activision relied on to grow historically,” said Kotick’s legal team.

This newest allegation originates from the fact that Sjunde AP-Fonden’s view chairman Emma Ihre also served in an executive role at Embracer Group at the time. The lawsuit itself was a bid to help “Embracer’s desire to boost sales of its games while leaving Activision hamstrung in the development of its own games that competed against Embracer’s titles.”

Responding to this through its own statement, Embracer Group has denied Kotick’s latest allegations. A representative for the company said that it was “humbled by Mr Kotick’s remark” about its competing with Activision. “Nevertheless, perhaps difficult to accept for Mr Kotick, but we did not and do not need any help from a Swedish pension fund in competing with Activision,” continued the company representative.

“Thus, in short, there was no coordination or collaboration between Embracer and [Sjunde AP-Fonden] relating to any of Mr Kotick’s statements. No agenda or instructions were directed from Embracer via Emma Ihre or directly to [Sjunde AP-Fonden].”

While Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard was called into question by several regulatory bodies from all around the world, including the US Federal Trade Commission, the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority, and the European Commission, the lawsuit by Sjunde AP-Fonden revolved around allegations of Activision Blizzard suffering from systemic issues with harassment and sexual misconduct. One report claimed that Kotick himself was involved in several instances of harassment and misconduct, with it stating that the CEO was not only aware of it happening, but also went as far as to protect abusers and withhold knowledge about these instances from the company’s board.

While Kotick would stay on in his executive position for quite some time following these reports, he eventually announced his departure from the company following the completion of its acquisition by Microsoft. Amidst this, 2022 also saw Activision settle its sexual harassment lawsuit, with the settlement amount said to be valued around $18 million.

The company would also sign an agreement with California’s Civil Rights Department as part of the latter’s 2021 lawsuit that would result in it paying $54 million for allegations of systemic sexual harassment and racial discrimination, as well as unequal pay for women.

Why is that a problem? The Call of Duty App doesn’t just include Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, which launched last year to underwhelming reviews due to its campaign. It also tracks Black Ops 6, Warzone, the Modern Warfare series, and much more. Keep in mind that these player counts follow Holiday discounts and even a free week. The sad part is that this isn’t even the lowest in the past week, as it reached 39,015 peak concurrent players on January 8th.

Of course, none of this changes the fact that Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 topped last November’s US sales charts (even if Battlefield 6 emerged as the top-selling premium game of 2026). Engagement with the app on consoles in the region was also as strong as ever, only lagging behind Fortnite and eking out ahead of Grand Theft Auto 5.

Nevertheless, Activision has pivoted significantly by announcing that it would no longer release back-to-back Modern Warfare and Black Ops titles. “We will drive innovation that is meaningful, not incremental. While we aren’t sharing those plans today, we look forward to doing so when the time is right.” Its developers have apparently been building the “next era of Call of Duty,” and judging by the current release cycle, it may be Modern Warfare 4.

We gave it a five out of ten for the multiplayer (despite netcode and hit registration issues), and Zombies (despite the overtly safe gameplay loop). The campaign is an utter disaster, but at least Treyarch released an update to let you skip it and go straight to Endgame.

The difference comes down to scale, with Söderlund noting that Embark Studios would have to expand massively just to be able to compete with Activision and EA. However, the studio didn’t want to go down that route, and decided that refining its development pipeline and building tools would have been a smarter way to go while still maintaining a smaller team.

“To start a new studio from scratch and to compete with the likes of EA and Activision and others, if you follow traditional development methodologies, you’re going to have to have five, six, seven hundred people,” he said. “We didn’t want to be that, we couldn’t afford that many people, and we didn’t believe that was the way to get to the right type of innovation and quality.”

“So when we started Embark, we spent the first seven to 10 months conceptualising ARC Raiders and most of the time we spent on production methodologies and building tools and pipelines to change the way games were being developed. With the ambition of being substantially faster in developing games, so that we could compete with these big publishers but with a substantially smaller team.”

Former CEO of parent company Nexon, Owen Mahoney, also commented on Embark Studios’ decision to focus on its developmental tools and production methodologies, noting that the studio was “super intentional” in its decision to not go for a big team too fast.

“You guys were super intentional in that if we have too big a team, it gets very hard to run, we can do a lot with software,” said Mahoney. “And you were also very clear that you wanted to build something different.”

In the same interview, Söderlund had also spoken about ARC Raiders‘ focus on fostering more friendly interactions between players rather than promoting competitive gameplay. He noted that this was the big reason behind features like leaderboards not coming to the extraction shooter.

“We’ve had several discussions about Nemesis systems and all types of things,” he said. “I don’t know where the team are on them right now. I think one of the beauties of this game is the fact that we don’t have those leaderboards, and it’s not competitive.”

“We don’t want to necessarily foster that type of gameplay. The game isn’t about shooting other players. You can do that if you want to, but the ethos of the game has never been to go in and shoot players. It’s a part that we use to craft tension.”

He also went into detail about the PvE roots of ARC Raiders, since that’s what the title was initially announced as, and discussed how adding other players to the same match helped a lot in creating and establishing a sense of tension.
