A fun and engaging fairy tale adventure.

Every once in a while, a new 2D point-and-click adventure game comes out that can be boring, fun, magical, mysterious or engrossing. Majority of the point and click adventure titles that I have been played in the past usually go into the ‘boring’ category and uninspiring to the point where you just don’t care about solving puzzles anymore or finishing the game to find out how it ends. However, Night of the Rabbit is actually engaging and mysterious enough to enjoyed to its completion despite some of its puzzle-solving flaws.

Night of the Rabbit strongest point is certainly it’s presentation and style. If you’re looking for an artistic fairy tale adventure experience, then you have come to the right place. The game has beautiful 2D backgrounds and animations, superb voice acting that totally fits its theme and overall feel. Since the world in the game is so engaging, it actually helps you to play the game because you want to click on everything that stands out in the background to see if anything intriguing or magical happens.

The story in the game is quite simple and doesn’t require much of a brain to get into. You play as a 12 year old boy named Jeremiah Hazelnut who always dreamed of being a magician one day. Thankfully, in video games developers can create anything they want, and Night of the Rabbit does an admirable job of executing a classical fairy tale story-line. During the first chapter of the game after you solve a few puzzles you get to meet a rabbit by name of Marquis de Hotto who’s a magician and is a need of apprentice. He offers Jeremiah Hazelnut the opportunity to do what he always wanted to become, and of course the boy accepts the offer and the real adventure experience begins from there.

Overall Night of the Rabbit delivers when it comes to bringing story elements and the world of the game thanks to the excellent voice acting, 2D art, animations and fun story-telling.

Gameplay in the Night of the Rabbit is quite standard and doesn’t actually deliver anything new to point-and-click adventure games that haven’t been done before. As Jeremiah Hazelnut, your job is to solve puzzles, listen and look for clues and talk to fairy tale characters to figure out what to do next. As any adventure game, you have an inventory that you use to combine elements to create an item to solve a particular puzzle and so on.

Earlier in the game the puzzles are easy to solve, but as you get further into the game get ready for a some frustration and annoyances due to useless hints that don’t help you in any way whatsoever. The only real help you can get is by pressing Space Bar on your keyboard to bring up your magical coin that shows you every interact-able object on screen.

There have been a few times where it just got downright annoying since I was not able to continue the game and see how the story-line progresses. You may come to the same conclusion at one point in the game, unless you’re extremely patient and don’t mind brain melting.

Despite some of the frustrating puzzles Night of the Rabbit still delivers a solid gameplay experience that can still be enjoyed if you look past its frustrating puzzles thanks to its unique style, feel and story-telling. I personally love fairy tales, so I decided to stick with it and keep on going until the end.

Overall Night of the Rabbit is a delightful adventure game that I think everyone should at least give a shot. The presentation of the game is certainly the reason you’d want to play this game despite its issues with some of the puzzle elements. If there is ever to be a sequel, I would play it and hope that some of the puzzle mechanics would improve. Adventure games are quite scarce now, and Night of the Rabbit clearly sticks out as one of the intriguing titles that adventure fans should give a try.

The Book of Unwritten Tales: The Critter Chronicles is a hit or miss for the point-and-click genre fans.

The Book of Unwritten Tales: The Critter Chronicles is a prequel to the The Book of Unwritten Tales that was released on July 31st 2012. The Book of Unwritten Tales: The Critter Chronicles is a mixture of beautiful 2D and 3D point and click adventure game. This game is stylized, full of humorous dialogue, silly characters and of course the traditional point-and-click puzzles that are very similar to “The Monkey Island” adventure games.

If you are familiar with point-and-click adventure games then this will be no different than any other game in this genre. All you do is click on different objects in the scene and try to figure out what to click on and what to do next. Puzzles may also require to combine certain objects in your inventory to create another object and use it on a particular character, or on something in the scene. Sometimes, you even have to interact and have conversations with characters to actually make them do a certain action in order to continue the story, talking to characters can also help you find clues.

The story acts as a prequel to The Book of Unwritten Tales on how Critters met Nate. In this prequel you will be playing as both Nate and Critters separated into different sections for each character. One of the main issues I have with this main game is that it’s can be really frustrating and annoying on trying to figure out what to do next. You can use the space-bar button to show you all of the points of interest in the scene, but even then you can still be at a loss on what’s going on in.

You won’t be able to tell if you need to combine certain objects in your inventory, or move your character somewhere else and use a particular item on something in the scene. This level of frustration can cause you to either quit the game, or just never come back to it once you have figured it out. This game is not for everyone and it requires a lot of patience. If you are super patient, and feel comfortable enough to try to spend a lot of time to figure out where to go and what to do next, then by all means play the game. Thankfully the game is not frustrating throughout majority of the course, it’s only some of the puzzles that can be.

Despite the game’s frustrating levels of the puzzles the humor and the art style can really help the players to keep on going and help them to finish the game. This is one of the most beautiful point-and-click adventure games I have ever seen, or played in my life, and that says a lot. The amount of drawn 2D art and combination of 3D is astounding, it’s really a great visual feat. Once you get into the rhythm of this game and figure out how the puzzle solving works, this game can be a complete blast.

The Book of Unwritten Tales: The Critter Chronicles has a difficulty options, the higher the difficulty the more puzzles you have to solve in order to progress through the game. In order for the player to enjoy the game at their full brain capacity would be to play on the hardest difficult. When you play the hard difficulty you actually have to be able to solve all the puzzles in order to progress, also the help menu is disabled by default on hard difficulty it can be turned back on in the settings menu if you wish.

In conclusion The Book of Unwritten Tales: The Critter Chronicles is a hit or miss for the point-and-click genre fans. Some fans might just fall in love with the world, humorous dialogue awesome art style and continue to play and try to beat the game at it’s highest difficulty setting, While other can easily just be turned off by the frustrating puzzles and the amount of time it may take to solve them. This game is not for everyone, but if you don’t some of the frustrating puzzles, then I suggest you check it out and play this game first, if you haven’t played the original one yet.

And it's handled by the creator of Monkey Island.

Remember when we covered Double Fine’s next big project, The Cave, published by Sega and handled by none other than the creator of Monkey Island Ron Gilbert? Well, the multi-platform side-scrolling adventure game has just received a new character trailer – and it looks as awesome as we thought it would.

The trailer reveals the various characters you can choose in the game: The Hillbilly, The Scientist, The Monk and The Twins, each with their own seemingly different abilities and segments. The game sets a very interesting mood with its graphics – one that is both serene yet disturbing.

Speaking about the game, Gilbert said that its story centers on “a sentient talking cave that draws people to it so they can enter and hopefully discover something about themselves” and that it will feature co-op play. The Cave is currently set to release in January 2013 for Xbox 360 and PS3 via Xbox Live and PSN respectively, and for PC.

Learn about yourself via video games, why don't ya?

Check it out: What’s better than an adventure game published by Sega and developed by Double Fine, the minds behind Psychonauts and Brutal Legend, and helmed by the creator of Monkey Island himself Ron Gilbert? When it’s a reality, like The Cave is. Sega recently held a Q&A with fans, where they asked Gilbert questions regarding the game. Some of the replies revealed interesting details about the game’s story and elements.

As Gilbert states, “The story is about a sentient talking cave that draws people to it so they can enter and hopefully discover something about themselves. Of course, we should all be careful what we ask about ourselves.” Also, “one nice thing The Cave does that Maniac Mansion didn’t is co-op.”

He also spoke about the art-style as being “not too cartoony. We didn’t want to go with realism because that brings with it a lot of problems (having to make all the animations realistic) with it, plus it’s just not as interesting as being about the have some fun with the style. We also wanted a style that really allow the fun animations of the characters to come out. The seven characters you play with don’t ever talk, so relied on the animators to bring out their personality, and having a fun art style really helps.”

It’s certainly something to look forward to. Check out the full Q&A for more details.

It helps if the studio is renowned and has a recognizable entity like Tim Shafer. I don’t think any studio will be able to accomplish what has happened here. That’s right, the kickstarter funding attempt for Double Fine’s new game has soared to $2 million so far.

Shafer has mentioned that they need $20 million to create Pyschonauts 2 – so that means $18 million to go! Keep at it folks.

Those of you there with a few greying locks may remember the quirky, claymation adventure classic that is 1996’s Neverhood, a game with a contender for best soundtrack of all time. Bazinga Studios are hoping to change all this and are currently negotiating the licensing contract for the title. Fingers crossed guys.

Thanks to Joystiq for the info.
