The stuff of nightmares.

Seeing a massive, grotesque, hairy spider in real life would give you a heart attack, but seeing that same thing in a video game counts as an amazing experience. Thankfully, over the years game have provided us with plenty of nightmare fuel. In this feature, we’re going to take a look at fifteen of the scariest creatures and entities in games. Given the vast pool of options available to us, it’s a given that we’re going to miss out on many terrifying creatures, so if any of your favourites get left out, sound off in the comments below.

With that out of the way, let’s get started.

PYRAMID HEAD (SILENT HILL 2)

Silent Hill 2 has the legacy of being one of the greatest horror games ever created, and there are plenty of reasons for that. One of those reasons is Pyramid Head. This terrifying, faceless monster is one of the scariest things we’ve ever come across in a Silent Hill game, and that’s saying something. Their hulking figures inspire fear the moment you lay your eyes on them, and watching them silently strut about with murderous intent strikes a primal fear in the player like few other things do.

"There is still a lot to be done."

The Xbox One Scorpio is going to be the most powerful console ever made- Microsoft have shouted that fact from the rooftops to ensure that we get it, and at this point, we do. But even knowing that, the simple fact that Microsoft mandate parity with standard Xbox One systems does raise the question of whether or not that power can ever be put to good use.

According to Thomas Grip of Frictional Games, who have brought us the excellent SOMA and Amnesia: Dark Descent, and who are currently working on the Amnesia Collection for PS4, there is still a lot that that power can be put to use for, even if gameplay parity is mandated.

“I think there is still a lot to be done,” Grip said, in an interview with GamingBolt. “As long as the biggest difference for a more powerful machine is not in gameplay-related stuff (such as map collision RAM use), then you can easily tweak. For instance you can make simpler lighting, and so on. This is what you do for most PC Games already.”

Thoughts on Grip’s comments? Let us know in the comments section below.

One of the most influential and best horror games of all time is Amnesia: Dark Descent. And now PlayStation 4 players will have the chance to play it and its expansion and sequel, because the Amnesia Collection has been announced for PlayStation 4 by Frictional Games.

These games were previously available to PC players only, meaning this collection becomes the first time that console players will get to play these games. “From the creators of SOMA, the Amnesia series ushered in a new age of horror gaming. Rather than cut-scenes and forced jump-scares, the Amnesia series wrapped fragile players within its grim embrace, beckoning them to explore and survive amid the darkness as it pulled at the frayed edges of sanity,” the press release accompanying the announcement of the collection reads.

You can check out the announcement trailer for the collection, as well as the list of games available in this package, below. Amnesia: Collection is set to release on November 22nd digitally.
