Chief Commercial Officer, Darren Jobling stated, “From the initial closed beta launch right through to our commercial release we’ve been taking our lead from the game’s beta test players adding and changing features accordingly, don’t expect this to change now we’re in commercial release. Our teams have long term plans for new content, new features and new initiatives which will cement Auto Club Revolution’s position at the top of the pile.”

The game has been in the beta phase since March 2012, during which the team collected a large amount of feedback to improve the experience from the more than 2.5 million races that have already taken place.. A special voucher will be distributed to beta players for unlocking an exclusive paint scheme when the game goes live.

We take Eutechnyx's driving sim for a spin with the Auto Club Revolution open beta.

Eutechnyx took their free to play racing sim Auto Club Revolution into open beta at the end of last month and, having had some time cruising around ACR’s bounty, we felt the word was worth spreading on the most realistic F2P racer out there. Featuring over fifty officially licensed cars and a large variety of real world tracks, ACR is the most realistic dose of racing satisfaction currently available online.

The most striking first impression of ACR is its format, coming in the form of a browser led menu system. All your lobbies, car customisation, leaderboards and store purchases are handled in your web browser. With so much information on hand, the system holds up surprisingly well. Everything is tabbed and categorised away to keep it organised, yet all necessary options and information are present without having to dig behind a slew of menus.

In order to get a proper race experience though, the actual gameplay takes place in a separate race app users must download. Once the race is over, you’re returned to the browser menus once more. This kind of dual app gameplay may seem gratuitous to some, but it does make for a much smoother racing experience. The race app does a great job when it comes to the visuals, looking crisp on higher settings. Though the graphics get a boost from the race app, the jump between browser and program can take some time. Races can take a while to load as a result, a wait that is emphasised if the servers aren’t playing nice on a given day.

That said, once you’re in a race, the extra load time is often worth it. The physics, weight and realism add up to a satisfying driving experience, one where true skill and judgement is demanded of the player. New players aren’t going to be totally turned away by the challenge of the basic driving mechanics though, as a variety of driver assistance is available (unless you access a server that specifically turns them off). From automatic breaking to traction aids, assists culminate in the form of a driving line shown in the hud to help newcomers better anticipate sharp corners. It helps expand the appeal of the game, but without ever being overly patronising or limiting player agency.

What may intimidate newcomers is the sheer amount of real world cars and tracks on offer. I’m not exactly the most clued up when it comes to cars and the like, but even I recognise some of the bigger names in here. There are already a huge amount of vehicles, with more being added by the ever vigilant Eutechnyx team each week. Vehicles are divided up into classes to help you build up your collection slowly, and you can only get access to higher class vehicles as you level up over your racing career. To help you in this endeavour, every vehicle has a set of challenges that award you with exp and in-game credits, further bolstered by a recurring daily challenge. It becomes quite addictive just pursuing these, though they are often quite easily won.

All cars are given a VPR (vehicle performance rating) based on their stats, and you can boost a vehicle’s VPR through a variety of upgrades. The lower class cars will have a max VPR you can reach of course, but the amount of customisation is impressive, and the fact that all the upgrade parts are also fully licensed is yet another feather in Auto Club Revolution’s cap. The game also does a good job of warning you if you’re upgrades are going to seriously imbalance the car’s performance, though there were times where, in my total lack of automobile knowledge, I was still easily able to damage my car’s traction through gratuitous engine upgrades. The warnings are noob friendly, but clearly not that noob friendly.

Alongside the vehicle upgrades are a plethora of other cosmetic alterations you can make for each vehicle. The variation is staggering, with even more additions promised in the future. All these extras can be costly, but you have the option of paying for most items using either in-game credits or real world currency converted into ACR’s E-bucks. In a preview demonstration we were kindly given, Eutechnyx senior marketing manager Dan Robinson assured us that it isn’t a pay to win situation with regards to purchasing better cars and parts. Naturally though, as with all titles that use micro-transaction models, trying to buy some of the pricier cars with credits alone would be hugely tedious, especially when you only earn a meagre few hundred credits for each race.

Where credits become more forthcoming is when you get involved in an auto club. Working like guild systems you see in other MMO titles, auto clubs offer you a new range of activities to complete with others and, with a shared exp pool all club members contribute to, you can also level up your club to get new social options and features. These social systems are fairly robust and, with recommended friends popping up on the ACR home menu, it’s definitely a game that promotes the social side of racing. You can also communicate with the huge hangout lobbies you launch games from, further promoting community interaction.

The netcode itself seem solid, with games rarely suffering from any kind of lag. An issue can occur though regarding actually joining games. On a fair few times online matches just failed to load me in, resulting in a long loading screen followed by a “did not finish” result. It was frustrating just how many times this happened, but it’s a glitch that will hopefully be resolved before ACR comes out of beta.

It’s great to see a realistic racing title take the free to play business model with such gusto. The sheer variety of cars is likely to make motor fans dribble with anticipation and the online matches remain balanced by the robust matchmaking achieved through vehicle VPR ratings. There are of course a few glitches still in the beta that will hopefully get worked out, along with a host of features merely marked as “coming soon.” That said, with its solid racing engine, wide support support for various controllers and wheels and huge amount of free content, ACR may well turn the PC into the new home of the racing simulator.

Players will be able to pre-order the Z4 from April 11th onwards. The first 200 pre-orders will receive the Z4 on April 17th, as the car releases on April 24th for the general public. So there’s that one week advantage for the lucky 200.

New screenshots showcase the wet roads of Auto Club Revolution.

Eutechnyx has recently announced that their free-to-play online racing title Auto Club Revolution just received a new update in the form of wet environmental conditions for tracks. has added a new racing dynamic to its tracks; wet conditions.

This naturally lends a whole new dynamic to the game, with limited visibility and more effort needed to steer. As Technical Director Mark McClumpha puts it, “Wet environments offer racers a dynamic way to race in Auto Club Revolution. Weather conditions are a premium feature and being able to deliver this level of content in a free to play game show ACR’s continued commitment to the ensuring we offer premium content to our players.

“We have taken time and care to create our wet track system, so that it has a real effect on the player experience. The wet surroundings will have varying affects across a range of surface types, we wanted the player to have to rethink their racing styles and adapt to this new feature.”

Eutechnyx has announced that Auto Club Revolution will get a new track called Sonoma Raceway. You have probably heard of it, if not, here’s an official description:

“San Francisco, USA, Sonoma Raceway hosts 340 days of racing activity each year covering an array of motorsports, but now Auto Club Revolution opens Sonoma to racers all year round,” the press release read.

“Sonoma is the latest officially licensed and approved track to be brought to the online racing game and the 12-turn road course lets players race in that glistening Californian sun. The official licensing of the Sonoma track represents Eutechnyx’s unique position and insight, enabling licenses to be used across multiple projects to provide players with the best content.”

They have also modified the replay system, the system requirements for running the game have been minimised and leaderboards have been reset, to ensure that drivers have the best and most robust experience available.

Tell us what you think in the comments section below.

Professional griefers, beware.

Eutechnyx, those fabulous people who brought you the free to play racing title Auto Car Revolution (check out our exclusive interview to learn tons more about it), have announced a few good updates for this January.

First, the HUD has been expanded to now include car proximity radar, personal best lap times and better navigation map. Tracks has also been updated to include brand new 3D racing lines to help aid drivers. The car friction and collision physics have also been significantly improved, so you can count on impacts and damage to be more realistic.

That of course doesn’t include the new car handling mechanics and visual improvements, including a better ghosting system to prevent griefing (that is, when a play drives in different directions or stays stationary and causes collisions with other cars). Now other players can drive right through him without worries.

Finally, the VPR range, wherein players will be matched only with racers using cars with similar specs to provide better competition. You can also view multiplayer races from all hangouts, making for a more intuitive play experience.

We get up closed and personal for 'Auto Club Revolution'.

We recently had an opportunity to speak with Darren Jobling who is the Chief Operating Officer of Eutechnyx, the developers of Auto Club Revolution.

We talked in great length about what fans can expect from the game, the market of Free 2 Play, new tracks and cars and much more.

Check out the full interview below.

Ravi Sinha: Let’s be honest here: Your game is still a bit low-key. Even Wikipedia drew a total blank!

Darren Jobling: The best kept secret in online gaming, right? Actually, Auto Club Revolution is designed by our team for the community and, as such, we take our beta test phase very seriously. We hungrily collect and document all the feedback we get and try to act on each and every good idea.

It’s because of this that we’ve currently only run a few small PR campaigns in the gaming media to generate a useful sized beta test group. We’re delighted with our incredibly dedicated group of testers and their feedback has brought us much closer to our marketing launch – watch out for news of this soon and you should even see a Wikipedia page too!

Ravi Sinha: When did the idea first hit for Auto Club Revolution, and when was it decided that free to play was the way to go?

Darren Jobling: Believe it or not, the idea was conceived around 6 years ago when we visited China. Here we were introduced to the free-to-play (F2P) business model and immediately realised that it would apply perfectly to a community based car racing game.

We then took that business model back to the UK and applied it to what we knew people liked to do in the Western World – buying officially licensed cars and customise them by fitting real parts. Eutechnyx is the world’s leading independent developer of racing games, so for us it was a matter of applying our established racing experience to the new concept of F2P.

And free-to-play is intrinsic to the Auto Club Revolution concept.

Ravi Sinha: When it comes to designing a racing simulator with cars licensed from the motor industry, titles like Need for Speed: Most Wanted and Forza Horizon are minting money. Do you feel that there is a different audience to explore with F2P that still craves that authentic racing experience?

Darren Jobling: The huge difference between these titles and Auto Club Revolution, is that to experience them you have to go to the shops and part with your $60. Auto Club Revolution gives you the same authentic racing experience but for free – that is the fundamental difference.

Auto Club Revolution also offers the racing and car enthusiast a level of social engagement that just isn’t possible on the consoles – places to meet, play, socialise & form clubs with other racers with a level of depth never before experienced.

We also release new cars, tracks & game modes every month, short circuiting the 12-month release cycle of racing games on the consoles.

Ravi Sinha: Do you feel that Auto Club Revolution is aimed at a more casual audience, or that it simply offers something different to the hardcore motorhead?

Darren Jobling: Auto Club Revolution is aimed at anyone with a love of cars and or racing. Our core audience is the die hard virtual racing fan, but the design and playability of the game has also attracted more casual car enthusiasts – the sort of people interested in meeting up with other petrol heads experiencing the latest cars from the car manufacturers.

Ravi Sinha: Of course, Auto Club Revolution isn’t the only free to play racing simulator online. There’s also Codemasters’ F1 Online: The Game. What is it like to have to compete with established AAA companies trying to enter the same F2P spectrum?

Darren Jobling: It is going to be interesting to see how the established companies try and adapt their business models to take advantage of the free-to-play market. Eutechnyx also owns the worldwide rights to NASCAR, the biggest motorsport in the world, so we are aware of the issues Codemasters would have faced when moving a franchise like Formula 1 to F2P online.

However, we have competed with Codemasters on a daily basis for the last 24 years, so we are relishing this new challenge as well – we never underestimate anybody – but I believe that the biggest challenges will not come from the big guys, I believe it will come from the small innovative companies that we all haven’t heard of yet.

Ravi Sinha: From the ground up, what are the challenges you faced in developing Auto Club Revolution?

Darren Jobling: One of the greatest challenges was adapting our console optimized graphics engine and applying this to a web based PC platform so as to maintain a high quality visual product.

We also had to re-invent ourselves as game publishers because we hadn’t published a game ourselves since 1996! A key part of this was generating a close relationship with our community – working out what they did and didn’t like about the beta and changing this prior to the upcoming commercial launch of Auto Club Revolution.

Ravi Sinha: Despite being free to play, Auto Club Revolution looks pretty damn good. When it comes to F2P, what is your take on being able to bring the most premium experience possible with more limited resources than a commercial release would need?

Darren Jobling: Thanks, that’s praise indeed!– We built Auto Club Revolution with the philosophy of ‘no compromise because we’re F2P and as a result we applied more resources to this project than to your typical console game commercial release. It’s now generally accept that MMO games are more costly to produce than their console cousins, and we have applied that same thinking to the F2P world of Auto Club Revolution.

When you think about it, a console game requires that once the game is released, the only fixes or upgrades you can perform are via occasional patches for those connected online, or a new version of the game. If the game has been released to the public but 6 months later trends change, you cannot change the game to meet those trends.

With Auto Club Revolution we are adding new tracks, new cars, new game modes, new concepts, fixing bugs, etc., and uploading these to the game on a weekly basis for community feedback. So the Auto Club Revolution we have in Open Beta now will be hugely enhanced in just 12 months’ time.

Ravi Sinha: We’ve already witnessed a new content update for Auto Club Revolution which adds a new track (Kolmården Test Circuit) and new car (Raptor GTR) to the mix. Are there any bigger updates in the pipeline? Maybe for adding new modes and such?

Darren Jobling: You can expect new content from Auto Club Revolution on a regular basis – at the start of the project we were adding one car per week and we intend to keep up this type of momentum. As we are working in collaboration with all of the world’s biggest car makers, you’ll also be able to experience the latest models in Auto Club Revolution as the car manufacturers release them to the public.

We are also adding at least one new track and game mode every single month. There is a commitment to bring significant new content to the Auto Club Revolution world, to grow the game and build on the unique nature of the experience for new and current players. An example of this was the first iteration of our fan group feature ‘Auto Clubs’ which released at the end of last year.

Ravi Sinha: In terms of players, what kind of numbers does Auto Club Revolution usually see on a monthly basis?

We’re really happy with the growth of our beta community since launch last year and you should expect to see a significant rise in the game’s profile as our marketing team begin their assault in the coming months.

Ravi Sinha: When it comes to cultivating a community of gamers, and to have them continue coming back, what kind of challenges have you faced?

Darren Jobling: As with any new game, the most important first steps are laying down foundations for a strong community to flourish through playing the game. With Auto Club Revolution being a very social game, cultivating that community and encouraging players to come back on a regular basis has happened by listening to the players and adapting the game to what they would like to see. The biggest example of this is the ability to obtain cars with in-game credits, knows as our ‘Cars for Credits’ feature.

We of course face the usual challenges of keeping long-term players interested by offering awesome content throughout their gameplay and community experiences. This is something we’ll continually work on, but signs so far are very positive – many of our higher ranking players continue to remain heavily engaged despite reaching the highest rank, with many becoming our most enthusiastic fans.

Ravi Sinha: Nowadays, racing games tend to lean more towards an arcade-like experience of freedom while still offering a large dose of realism with the vehicles. Do you think we’re past the days of simple simulation-only titles like Gran Turismo or arcade racers like Wipeout?

Darren Jobling: No, their days are certainly not over. What’s fantastic about the games industry in 2013 is that it’s grown so much, not just in terms of the number of players but the variety of platforms that you can play on. Simple arcade games work perfectly on mobile platforms, yet PC players typically need a more in-depth experience.

We think the same is true of the F2P market, both hardcode sim, arcade and even single button free have their place. We believe with a game like Auto Club Revolution, that a strong game experience coupled with rich authentic (including licensed) content built on a strong community platform is the way forward.

Ravi Sinha: What is your take on the market of free to play games for consoles? Currently, these games seem to be restricted to PC despite big names like Bioware and EA announcing F2P titles and Crytek seeing solid numbers in Russia for their FPS Warface.

Darren Jobling: All good news for the game player – the more options the better to experience a game before you part with your hard earned cash has got to be a good thing. It now seems extremely likely that F2P will form a major part of the strategy for the future of console gaming and we’re pleased about that.

Ravi Sinha: 2012 alone saw a pretty big rise for F2P titles, with games like Tribes: Ascend leading the way. What do you think prompted this rise and the subsequent influx of big name companies for a piece of the piece?

Darren Jobling: When we first saw the free-to-play business model in China I remember thinking that we were going to have real problems in the console game world – it is such a compelling “try before you buy” concept.

Sure, not every game will go free-to-play and there are some games where this model won’t work, but the great news is that there will continue to be a wide variety of business models in the games industry, but the historical big name publishers obviously want a piece of this action and they are entering the market aggressively.

However, free-to-play is a totally different design mentality – applying console game design to F2P is unlikely to be successful. Therefore, expect some spilt blood during this transition, even for the big established names in console publishing.

Ravi Sinha: Auto Club Revolution actually came about in June 2011. Has the current rise in F2P gaming helped your cause – perhaps granted you a greater degree of exposure since Auto Club Revolution was one of the early adopters?

Darren Jobling: I think that it has, especially in places like the UK that haven’t been as quick to get into free-to-play as say, somewhere like Germany, our number one territory for Auto Club Revolution players.

Ravi Sinha: For the game, and market, to continue to thrive in the future, what measures do you feel should be taken going forward?

Darren Jobling: In no particular order, I would say: –

Keep social and community interaction at the core of your offering

Building a strong rapport with your community, especiallyif they are telling you something that you don’t want to hear

Be prepared for the arrival of big name brands in free-to-play – Auto Club Revolution’s 150+ licences is just the start

Make the move to multi-format – mobile & tablets are key for Auto Club Revolution, as well as most other games out there

Make console quality games appearing in the browser a reality

Auto Club Revolution, like F1 Online: The Game, is a free online racing title which incorporates more exotic vehicles. Today, it features it’s own little update with a new racing location -‘Kolmården Test Circuit’ – for a total of 10 locations thus far.

Designed as a speed track through a Scandinavian forest-like location, Kolmården Test Circuit also acts as host for the introducion stages of Auto Club Revolution.

But that’s not all. Gamers will also get a taste of the new RA Class supercar, the Engineering Raptor GTR – a vehicle so rare and unique, that only one version of it exists in the real world.

Finally, to celebrate the new content, a leaderboard competition will be running until 12 AM on December 3rd for Kolmården Test Circuit.

Overall, it’s not the biggest, most encompassing update, but it’s good to see the development still catering to its fans and supporting the game this long.
