The titles and their DLC will be unavailable on digital storefronts from that date, while online services will end on November 7th.

Electronic Arts has announced that three Battlefield titles will be delisted on July 31st for Xbox 360 and PS3. Battlefield 3, Battlefield 4 and Battlefield: Hardline won’t be available on digital storefronts for the same, which also applies to their DLC. Online services for those platforms will also end on November 7th.

Of course, if you own any of these games, the single-player campaigns remain playable. Furthermore, each title will remain available for other platforms. Those still enjoying Battlefield 3 on PC or Battlefield 4 and Hardline on Xbox One, PS4, or PC can continue to do so without any issues.

The announcement comes a few months after Electronic Arts confirmed no further seasons for Battlefield 2042. The next title in the series has yet to be officially revealed. However, it has the largest team in the franchise’s history working on it, including DICE, Motive Studios, Ripple Effect Studios and Criterion Games. EA CEO Andrew Wilson described it as a “tremendous live service”, though details on its setting and mechanics remain unknown. Stay tuned for further updates.

We take a look at the history of Battlefield and try to figure out what is going on with this promising franchise.

The games industry is a turbulent one, and the ever-changing interests of fans and popular trends mean that developers have to constantly keep shifting gears to stand a chance at survival in this industry. We have seen many franchises abruptly fall from their former glory for this very reason, and one such franchise that has recently fallen into this bracket is DICE’s Battlefield. What was once a flourishing first-person shooter with plenty of spectacle and fandom has now been reduced to a shadow of its former self, and most would agree that the last couple of entries have failed to hit the mark in some way or another. To that end, we can’t help but ask the question – what the hell happened to Battlefield?

As fans of the franchise would know, Battlefield started off on a very strong foot. Battlefield 1942 was released in 2002 and was an instant hit on both a critical and commercial scale. At the time, DICE was able to distinguish its military shooter offerings from the competition by focusing on a sense of scale and team-based gameplay. Where other first-person shooters restricted themselves to smaller-scale maps and game modes focused on individual performances, Battlefield 1942 introduced its signature Conquest mode which emphasized teamwork and strategy in large-scale maps. In addition to this, Battlefield also added classes into the mix – and depending on the chosen role, players would have to fulfill their responsibilities and act accordingly during the game.

Fun fact: DICE originally proposed Battlefield 1942 as a GameCube exclusive, but in the absence of proper online functionality on the console – the game was then built for the PC.

DICE would then go on to continually succeed with each passing entry in the franchise. Future installments like Battlefield 2: Modern Warfare also provided a much-needed change of scenery to a modern landscape, but the developer also paid due attention to polishing its signature large-scale gameplay while also introducing new modes into the mix. The series’ upward trajectory continued with Battlefield: Bad Company, which added set-pieces and a likable cast of characters in the single-player department which helped widen the target demographic for the franchise.

All of this set the perfect stage for Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and Battlefield 3, the former becoming the biggest hit in the franchise’s history up until that point (and arguably to date). It sported great single-player campaigns and adrenaline-pumping multiplayer with a wide variety of destructible maps and environments. This was also the time when EA’s own IPs were struggling to find their place in the rapidly changing shooter landscape, which eventually led to the closure of Danger Close games and by extension, the final nail in the coffin for that franchise.

But EA’s premium shooter had a tough future ahead of itself. While Battlefield 4 would go on to receive great critical and commercial acclaim, fans were not impressed by the single-player campaign and the game wasn’t technically stable with bugs and glitches galore. Post-launch patches and DLC did eventually turn the game’s fate around, but the franchise’s reputation had already taken a blow. It also didn’t help that Battlefield: Hardline didn’t get well with a decent chunk of the fanbase, despite featuring some interesting spins to this tried and tested formula.

The next entry in the series, Battlefield 1 then released in 2016 and shifted gears to a different setting. Battlefield 1 felt like a much-needed breath of fresh air amidst the barrage of modern shooters on the market, and it also helped that DICE crafted a well-designed multiplayer experience complete with iconic vehicles and weapons of the era. While the single-player campaigns were short, these self-contained War Stories were quality stuff regardless. Battlefield had once again risen from the ashes, but that victory was short-lived.

Battlefield 5 was released shortly after in 2018 and was subject to substantial criticisms from fans on account of its derivative gameplay and lack of meaningful content upon launch. Again, post-launch updates did manage to reinvigorate some interest in the franchise, but the general consensus surrounding the game was one of wasted potential and that’s something most people are likely to agree with.

And this brings us to Battlefield 2042, the franchise’s biggest blunder to date. The game was highly anticipated by fans and was also the subject of a short delay due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But when the game was released, it was once again criticized on account of its forgettable multiplayer modes, balance issues, and inconsistent matchmaking alongside a general lack of polish with the experience. Since the game’s launch last year, EA has continually tried to recoup player numbers with post-launch updates, but it has repeatedly failed and the future of Battlefield 2042 looks really bleak at the moment.

So, when went wrong? We can see that modern shooters became all the rage during the Xbox 360 and the PS3 era which is when Battlefield was at its peak. Fan interest slowly disintegrated in the subgenre as time went by, and the lack of any real gameplay innovation didn’t do the game any favors. While Battlefield 1 was able to recoup some interest within the series, the tendency to make iterative upgrades over substantial changes put the franchise back in the slumps once again. Battlefield 2042 was released as an underwhelming and unfinished package during this crucial time, all of which have dealt a significant blow to the franchise’s reputation.

But I think that EA knows that maybe Battlefield has outstayed its welcome. Multiplatform publishers like EA, Ubisoft, and Activision know that any franchise has a limited lifespan – and they know that the best way to make the most out of it is to keep churning out games until it’s no longer profitable – and then move on to the next best thing. Franchises like Guitar Hero, Dead Space (although it’s now coming back in the form of a remake), and so many others have died similar deaths at the hands of these publishers.

That said, a counterpoint to this argument could be that EA is still working on turning Battlefield 2042‘s fates around for good with plenty of post-launch updates, so it’s not giving up on the franchise just yet. But that could also just be the last of EA’s attempts at salvaging some life from this game, and judging by the current market scenario and the recent moves made by Battlefield’s competitors – it seems that the best course of action is to diverge the franchise into a premium and a free-to-play segment; just like how other shooters have done with its offerings.

Spending upwards of $70 on a middling experience like Battlefield 2042 doesn’t make a lot of sense when games like Fortnite are offering mostly similar experiences without any price of admission. What EA eventually ends up doing with the Battlefield franchise remains to be seen, but one thing is certain – that some big changes are going to have to be done in order for the franchise to have a future.

According to players, it seems servers for Battlefield 4, Battlefield 1, and Battlefield Hardline are having a tough time thanks to the hackers DDoS-ing them.

While EA’s Battlefield 2042 has been going through a rough period since its launch for a number of reasons, it seems previous Battlefield games that are still cherished and played by the community are also experiencing some trouble, with hackers causing misery for their playerbases.

As reported by MP1st, it seems hackers are joining the servers of Battlefield 1, Battlefield 4, and Battlefield Hardline, intending to crash them through DDoS attacks. Users across a number of forums and social media sites – from Reddit to the EA Answers forums – have spoken about the frequent crashed being experienced in the three games. Apparently, in the case of Battlefield Hardline, this has ben going on since 2020, though apparently, the issue has become much more prevalent in past Battlefield titles.

This is not the first time that games by EA have had their servers taken down by hackers DDoS-ing them, as both Titanfall 1 and Titanfall 2 are unplayable to this date, with EA promising to fix the issue- though no solution has yet been delivered.

We’ll keep you posted if EA confirms or addresses any of the above mentioned claims, though as of now, the company has remained largely silent about the issue.

Battlefield 4's Second Assault expansion is going free-to-claim on the Microsoft Store, starting now and lasting for a full week.

EA has recently made Battlefield 4’s Second Assault expansion for free on the Microsoft store, and the offer is available for a full week. Following the week, the price will revert back to the original of course. However, the most interesting point of note is that fans need not be a subscriber of Xbox Live Gold or Xbox Game Pass to avail this offer.

The Battlefield 4: Second Assault expansion features 4 new maps, which includes fan-favorites from Battlefield 3 with souped up destruction mechanics. There are of course, new weapons, vehicles and gear for players to use in matches.

EA seems to be on a promotional spree for all things Battlefield, which isn’t a surprise since Battlefield 2042 releases this October. Battlefield 5 recently became a part of the PS Plus lineup, and Xbox Game Pass subscribers already have access to most of the games in the franchise thanks to EA Play.

The total line up for PS Now is now 750 games, Sony announced today on the PlayStation Blog. They also took this time to announce the lineup of games that will be joining the roster in March. If you’re in for the streaming of PS3 games, there are some great games you can look forward to this month, including the PS3 version of Battlefield 4, Mirror’s Edge, and Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (which was also on PS Plus last month).

On the PS4 front, things are slightly less impressive; you get NBA 2K18, WWE 2K18, Pac-Man: Championship Edition 2, and the original Red Faction as a PS2 Classic. You can download these games directly to your system and play them, unlike the PS3 titles, which can only be streamed.

You can check out the full lineup for yourself below, but it’s good to see the PS Now lineup actually trucking along well. It’s a valuable service for PlayStation owners to subscribe to—if not as central to the platform as something like Game Pass is to Microsoft.

Battlefield V is set to release not long from now, and EA is celebrating the days leading up to its release with the ‘Road to Battlefield V’ event. This event grants expansion giveaways, along with other rewards for those who are playing Battlefield 1 and Battlefield 4.

On the official forums for the upcoming Battlefield game, the developers provided details about what this community event will be bringing to players. First of all, all of the expansions for both Battlefield 1 and Battlefield 4 will be given away for free during this summer to all those who already own the base games. Apart from this, in Battlefield 1, weekly in-game rewards will be handed out to players and players will also be able to earn and unlock skins that can be used in Battlefield V when it releases. Additionally, Battlefield 1 players will also be able to complete daily tasks to earn weapons, skins, and more.

Battlefield V is set to release for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One on October 16.

Xbox One and PS4 players can add these DLC packs to their libraries for free.

Update: Battlefield 1’s In The Name of the Tsar is now free on Origin. Battlefield 4’s Final Stand can be found free here on Origin.

After releasing Battlefield 1’s They Shall Not Pass DLC and Battlefield 4’s Dragon’s Teeth DLC for the low, low price of free earlier in May, EA have announced some new free DLC packs for both games. For Battlefield 1 players, In The Name of the Tsar is available free on the PlayStation Store and Xbox Store.

With a new faction (Russian Army), six maps and numerous new weapons, In The Name of the Tsar is one of the better expansions for Battlefield 1. It’s oddly not free for PC but that could be pending an update on the Origin store so keep checking back.

As for Battlefield 4 players, they receive Final Stand which contains four new maps, two new weapons, five new attachments, and four new vehicles. It has a more futuristic bent, echoing the earlier Battlefield 2142. Pick it up on PlayStation Store and Xbox Store now.

Once these expansions have been added to a game library, they’re yours to keep forever. Not a bad deal, especially with Battlefield 5 to be revealed on May 23rd and released in October for Xbox One, PS4 and PC.

Ahead of the launch of Battlefield 1, the next major entry in DICE and EA’s first person shooter series, all expansions for Battlefield 4, the previous entry in the series, which launched in 2013, have now been made available for absolutely free on all systems.

The five expansions are China Rising, Second Assault, Naval Strike, Dragon’s Teeth, and Final Stand– together, they represent some of the most impressive post launch support that a shooter has ever received, and are representative of DICE’s singular commitment to Battlefield 4 after its rocky launch, which is probably responsible for salvaging that game and for retaining player loyalty in spite of everything. It also probably helps that the core of Battlefield 4, the moment to moment gameplay, was always great fun.

You can get these expansion packs for free through to September 19, which is this coming Monday. Battlefield 1, meanwhile, will launch on PS4, Xbox One, and PC this October.

If you own a copy of Battlefield 4 on the Xbox One, you’ll be happy to know that its China Rising expansion is now free to download. As a part of the Road to Battlefield celebrations that DICE are holding to drum up some free publicity and hype for the upcoming Battlefield 1, the premier expansion pack for 2013’s hit shooter will now be available to download for free.

As of right now, it’s only available to Xbox One owners on Xbox Live- EA and DICE usually make the expansions free to Xbox users, before sharing the love with PC and PlayStation 4 fans too. Hopefully by the end of this week, PS4 and PC players should be able to download the DLC for free, too.

Battlefield 4 launched in October 2013 for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PC. Battlefield 1 will be launching this October for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. Stay tuned to GamingBolt for more coverage and information.

The Road to Battlefield campaign continues to bestow free DLC.

Battlefield 4’s Final Stand DLC is now available for free on Xbox Live as part of the Road to Battlefield campaign started by DICE and EA where all Battlefield DLC will be given away free across all platforms. Oddly enough, Final Stand still has a price on PlayStation Network but that could change soon.

Last week saw Battlefield 4’s Dragon’s Teeth and Battlefield: Hardline’s Robbery DLC packs available for free on PC, PS4 and Xbox One. This week’s Final Stand brings four snow-based maps to Battlefield 4 and is actually the final expansion for the game. If you’re going to pick it up, now is the time.

It’s actually not a bad time to get into Battlefield 4. Battlefield 1 was recently revealed by DICE with more information to arrive in the coming months and it will be out by October 21st. Till then, there’s no better way to kill time then to play Battlefield 4.
