Meanwhile, another Call of Duty title is also set to join the subscription service's library in March, it's claimed.

The rollout of Activision’s back catalog for Game Pass has been slower than expected, but bit by bit, Microsoft has been bringing over the company’s titles to its subscription service nonetheless, and it looks like we might know the names of another couple of games that’ll be joining in the next few months.

As per known insider eXtas1s on Twitter, Call of Duty: World at War and Raven Software’s 2010 shooter Singularity will launch for Game Pass in May, with the former also having popped up on the Microsoft Store on Windows. Interestingly, the leaker also claims the two arrivals will be preceded by another Call of Duty title coming to Game Pass in March, though he did not elaborate on what that title will be.

Whether we can expect any other Activision titles to release for Game Pass before then remains to be seen, but either way, it seems like Microsoft is taking its time with bringing over the company’s legacy titles to the subscription service’s library. World at War and Singularity should both be solid additions, however, so subscribers will want to keep an eye out.

Intuitiveness, immersiveness, mastery, satisfaction – there’s a whole host of reasons why shooting guns is amongst the most popular activities in gaming.

There’s more to first-person shooters; it isn’t exclusively guns. For a first-person shooter to be regarded amongst the best it needs to showcase other elements such as evocative, well-designed settings within which to battle, or harbour engaging stories with meaningful characters. Away from multiplayer, single player campaigns are the best way for FPS games to demonstrate these other integral elements. So, here’s 15 FPS games with great campaigns that display great settings and stories alongside shooting.

Halo 2

You could make a case for any Halo game featuring on this rundown – Halo 3 for its gameplay, Halo 4 for its writing and character development, Halo: Combat Evolved, where it all began. But Halo 2 gets the nod here because it has all those standout elements but additionally its easily the most varied in terms of locations visited, with each locale itself superbly designed. The introduction of Arbiter Thel ‘Vadamee as a playable character not only put new weapons into our hands, but greatly expanded Halo’s lore too, presenting deeper purpose underlining Covenant motivations.

Both maps will benefits will benefit from new reactive environments. Sledgehammer's Adam Iscove also confirms FOV slider for consoles.

Call of Duty: Vanguard will have quite the multiplayer offering at launch with 20 base maps, new modes like Patrol and Champion Hill, and several returning features like Gunsmith. However, it also features some nods to previous World War 2 titles, namely Call of Duty: World at War. In a new blog post, Sledgehammer Games confirmed that Castle and Dome from the 2008 shooter will be coming to Vanguard.

Describing these as “love letters” for fans of World at War, both maps will “receive changes through reactive environments. Castle, in its Vanguard form, will see all its iconic shoji screens become destructible.” But that’s not all. Though it wasn’t mentioned during the recent stream, senior development director Adam Iscove revealed on Twitter that console players would be able to adjust the field of view.

Tweeting the news in a screenshot, which showcased PlayStation button prompts in the Graphics menu settings, there’s no confirmation as to whether this is current-gen exclusive or applies to previous gen consoles as well. Nevertheless, it’s good to see an eagerly requested feature added in.

Call of Duty: Vanguard launches on November 5th for Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PS4, PS5 and PC. Its multiplayer beta will start this weekend from September 10th to 13th for PlayStation pre-orders while other platform pre-orders gain access on September 16th to 20th.
Arguably the best World War 2 era Call of Duty game is now playable on Xbox One.

Microsoft continue on their quest to make just about every major Xbox 360 game playable on the Xbox One via their excellent backwards compatibility functionality, which allows Xbox 360 games to be played on the current generation Xbox console.

The newest major game to be added to the list of Xbox 360 games that can be played? Treyarch’s Call of Duty: World at War, which is arguably the best World War II era Call of Duty game, as well as arguably Treyarch’s best contribution to the series (I personally feel Black Ops is better). Call of Duty: World at War‘s addition to the list of backward compatible games on Xbox One follows the addition of Call of Duty 3 just last week.

In addition to World at War, Encleverment Experiment, Funtown Mahjong, and E4: Every Extend Extra Extreme are all being added to the list of Xbox 360 games that can be played on the Xbox One as well.

The world is such a better place for us having gotten it, though.

One of the biggest surprises and most popular modes in Treyarch’s Call of Duty: World at War was the Zombies mode that unlocked once you beat the main campaign. Even though it made no narrative and thematic sense, and the playstyle it encouraged was a complete opposite of the playstyle encouraged by the rest of the game, it became an instant, raging success, and today, stands as the most beloved mode in the series.

But how did this happen? Well, it almost didn’t.

With Treyarch scrambling and racing to complete the game on time, for the holiday 2008 release (the year before, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare had been one of the largest hits in gaming history), a small team within the studio got creatively restless, and decided to just make a small zombies minigame. This work was unauthorized and off-brand- and when the studio head was called in to have work on it canceled, and direct these people to work as per schedule (especially with the game already in danger of missing its ship date), he… didn’t. In fact, he enjoyed it so much, they went ahead and finished the mode, and put it into World at War as a hidden, unadvertised bonus for finishing the game.

With the advent of YouTube and social media, the mode took off, so much that its success took Treyarch by surprise, as they were sent scrambling again to support it with more content post launch (the original mode was rather barebones). By the time Treyarch’s next Call of Duty game, Black Ops, was due, Zombies had become an expectation, and when Treyarch went ahead and included a full fledged zombies mode in the title, it officially became solidified as a mainstay in Treyarch developed Call of Duty games.

Which means we should all be really excited for the Zombies mode we will be getting with this year’s Call of Duty, which is being developed by Treyarch.

All of the map pack prices for Call of Duty: World at War have been slashed to half the price they were. All three map packs are now $5 (400 Microsoft Points) each until November 1st which is down from it’s original price of $10. All map packs come to a total of 9 multiplayer maps and 3 Nazi Zombie maps for $15. A pretty good deal if you don’t already have them.

Multiplayer maps include Nightfire, Knee Deep, Station, Banzai, Corrosion, Sub Pens, Battery, Revolution, and Breach. The Nazi Zombie maps included are Verruckt, Shi No Numa and Der Riese. This is obviously an attempt to sell some maps before the release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, seeing as how many World at War players will be playing that come November 1oth.

New playlists have also been added as well. Here they are.

Hardcore HQ.

Team Flags (Map Pack): Capture the Flag, Domination, and War.

Team Objectives (Map Pack): Search &Destory, Headquarters, and Sabotage.
