Do you have a friend, a relative, or someone else you always wanted to play games with on a couch, but can’t decide which one you should dive into? Worry not. Here are our 15 best recommendations for couch co-op gamers.

Once a principal staple of games some twenty plus years ago, the ability to play in local, couch co-op nowadays more often seems a sought-after feature than something to be expected. There’s an unrivalled joy in playing together in the same room as others; something which online multi-player cannot replicate. Couch co-op is still a thing though; whilst some developers add local co-op respectively via updates, some of the best available weave the requirement to work diligently together into the very fabric of the game’s design.

The beat 'em up title's first DLC since 2012 also includes a new character alongside brand new character and weapon artwork.

During The Behemoth’s roadmap livestream, the developer announced a new DLC for Castle Crashers, its 2008 co-op beat ’em up title (which received a remaster for PS4 and Nintendo Switch in 2019). Painter Boss Paradise lacks a release date, but it’s coming to Steam. Check out the animated announcement trailer below.

The new DLC features a new character, Paint Junior, who can manifest “powerful art” to defeat enemies and new artwork for all playable characters and their weapons. The latter makes the models look more contemporary, though you can turn them off.

However, perhaps the most significant new addition is the integration of Steam Workshop and the ability to create knight skins. One can then share these with other players, expanding the customization to a whole new degree.

Stay tuned for more details and the release date for Painter Boss Paradise in the coming months. Castle Crashers is available for Xbox 360, PS3, PS4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC. Check out our review of the original version here.

Nine games free this weekend including Castle Crashers, Borderlands 2 and more.

While it’s not the Steam Summer Sale, the Steam Spring Cleaning Event isn’t a terrible substitute. Announced recently and ending on May 28th, the event is centered around playing games that haven’t been touched in one’s Steam Library.

Which is incredibly easy given the number of purchases and sweet deals that Steam has provided over the years (to say nothing of free Humble Store games). Participate in the event and you’ll earn the Spring Cleaning badge which can be leveled.

Of course, the best part is that there are a whopping nine games to enjoy for free as well. These include Borderlands 2, Castle Crashers, Cities: Skylines, Dirt 4, Don’t Starve Together: A New Reign, Dead by Daylight, Left 4 Dead 2, Tyranny and Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor. If you seriously have nothing to do this weekend, that’s a ton of games to keep you busy.

All of these games also have discounts going on so if there’s a particular title you enjoyed, it can be purchased for cheap. And thus the vicious cycle of unplayed games continues.

It's true in a way as well.

Xbox Live sort of created the console indie community and also made it a success, and this is something that should be known to people who have been playing games for a long time. It’s because of XBLA that we’ve seen the community grow and purchase a lot of Indie games.

Castle Crashers developer The Behemoth have come out and said the same thing and praised XBLA for have an active community and helping the Indie scene grow.

“I think without a doubt the indie console community would not exist as it does today if Xbox Live Arcade had been dropped after the original Xbox iteration. No other console hardware manufacturer has had the success of downloadable games that XBLA has had, and many smaller developers have shared in that success,” the studio’s John Baez told OXM.

This sentiment was echoed by Dave Voyles, who is the co-organiser of the annual Xbox Live Indie Games Uprising: “I don’t believe Microsoft was prepared for the success that it would see, both in terms of the number of devs who were on board, and the volume of people who would browse the marketplace.

“Before XBLIG, and even after, there has yet to be an easy avenue for independent devs to get work released without going through a closed platform or dealing with a publisher.”

PSN is catching up now and the Wii U has a long way to go, but the console Indie scene is healthy and that’s only because of Xbox Live.

Thanks, VG247.

Perhaps one of the most wanted Xbox Live Arcade game by Playstation 3 owners is non other than Castle Crashers, with the game being released on the Xbox 360 about two years ago, its about time Playstation owners get to see what the fuzz is all about.

Let me start off by saying this game is built around Co-op, and is the most fun while playing co-op with 3 other friends, but despite the fact that it’s co-op based, don’t let that stop you from playing it solo, the game is still enjoyable while playing alone, but you might find it not as fun and even much much harder.

There isn’t any story or even dialogue in the game, the plot is more or less about an evil magician stealing a precious crystal from the king, so the king sends 4 knights to beat the magician and return the crystal. These four knights are your main characters that you start with, Fire, Ice, Poison, and Electricity, each knight specializes in these elements, thus making each one unique, so for example the Ice knight can sometimes freeze enemies, while the Poison Knight can also deal damage over time on enemies.

You will travel through many different locations, hacking and slashing your way, through places that range from deserts to snowy mountains, each location features a unique and tough boss that will require different tactics to beat, and you might wind up losing over and over again when playing solo.

The game features many RPG elements, you can level up your character, and therefore you can choose to increase stats like Strength, Magic, Defense, and Agility. With the fact that the game is co-op based, you can only level one character at a time when playing solo, while when you play 4 player co-op, each player will level his own character.

The story campaign can be very short, but don’t mind that fact too much, the game is highly re-playable, you can beat it once in solo, and then again but with a different character, while you can of course beat it in co-op over and over again, you will always find it fun.

Castle Crashers also offers two other modes, Arena and Volley Ball. In Arena, one player can fight through ten waves of enemies, which depending on the arena, unlocks a new character when you finish it, while if you play arena with friends, you can choose to play a deathmatch and see who rains supreme, or play a team deathmatch game. In Volley Ball, players can choose to play against the computer, or against each other, both modes are really fun.

The game only suffers with 2 major problems, one of which is the fact that the game is pretty short, you can beat it in only one play through that should take you around 5 hours, but once again, the game has a high replay value, so you can always play the same levels again and again, not only to collect stuff or unlock new characters, but also because its so damn fun.

Another problem is the online issues, the game suffered these issues in the Xbox 360 version, and the problems are here again in the PS3 version, you will have a hard time trying to find a game or to host and join a friend.

You can play online with again up to four people, you can also combine both local and online, and all the modes mentioned before are also available online, with leaderboards and high scores.

The game only suffers with two major problems, one of which is the fact that the game is pretty short, you can beat it in only one play through that should take you around five hours, but once again, the game has a high replay value, so you can always play the same levels again and again, not only to collect stuff or unlock new characters, but also because its so damn fun.

Overall, Castle Crashers is a must buy for every gamer out there, despite the childish style, the game is bloody, funny, and sometimes even disgusting.

Castle Crashers is now available for the price of $15 on the Playstation Store, and if you are still on the fence on weather it’s a good purcahse, try the demo!

This game was reviewed on the PlayStation 3.

With or without it Castle Crashers will be well worth the purchase, especially for those who missed its 360 release.
