The studio needs more time to finalise changes for the western release of Earth Defense Force 6.

Developer Sandlot and publisher D3Publisher have announced that the western release window for co-op shooter Earth Defense Force 6 is being delayed from its originally planned Spring 2024 window to Summer 2024. For context, the game has already been released in Japan back in August 2022.

According to the announcement, the decision to delay the western release was made in order to allow to add polish to the game and finalise preparations for the game’s release outside of Japan. The Summer 2024 release window includes a western release for Earth Defense Force 6 on PC, PS4 and PS5.

Since its Japanese release back in 2022, the game saw a bit of success, having sold more than 300,000 copies in its first week of release. Since then, however the developer and publisher have been quiet about the game aside from the original announcement of its western release.

Earth Defense Force 6 takes place a few years after the events of Earth Defense Force 5, and involves the eponymous Earth Defense Force saving humanity from a new alien threat.

The classic alien repulsion series, Earth Defense Force is going to be leaving Japan for a close encounter with the rest of the world this summer, as announced by PlayStation Asia’s Facebook page today. The announcement for Earth Defense Force 5 localization came with a translated trailer for the title, which hit PS4 in Japan late last year.

The heavily cut trailer explains the premise of the game, a retelling of the first encounter with the aliens that humanity will endure through the series, making Earth Defense Force 5 something of a prequel. While it doesn’t show a lot of direct gameplay, it is out there given the Japanese release.

Of the few details that can be gleamed from the trailer directly relating to the localization, aside from the Summer 2018 release it announces at the end, it would appear that a dub is not planned, leaving players with subtitled Japanese dialog.

GIANT INSECTS.

Them! is one of my favorite movies. I was just a kid the first time I saw it with my dad, but it really resonated with me in a way that few movies do. It follows a group of law enforcement officers in New Mexico as they investigate a number of mysterious deaths and disappearances. As it turns out, everything is the work of giant ants that were exposed to extreme doses of radiation during the testing of the atomic bomb.

This may sound schlocky, but Them! is actually a great movie that focuses on suspense and horror rather than creature effects. The film, which was released in 1954, was the first of the “big bug” movies, and is often cited by critics as one of the best science-fiction films of the era. Somehow, it managed to make the concept of giant insects work without feeling silly or ridiculous, and its intelligent script, direction, and acting elevated it above its subject matter.

"The game is pretty simple: you’ll be dropped into a combat area and tasked with clearing all of the red dots from your minimap, which usually represent giant insects. Once you do, the game will usually spawn more giant insects for you to kill, and you’ll repeat this same basic formula until the game has decided that you’ve killed enough giant insects and rewards you with the mission complete screen."

Needless to say, Earth Defense Force 2025 is nothing like that film. This is a B-movie game that revels in how absurd it is, and follows the titular Earth Defense Force as they battle giant insects, aliens, giant robots, and other ridiculous things in their quest to save the Earth from total destruction. The game is pretty simple: you’ll be dropped into a combat area and tasked with clearing all of the red dots from your minimap, which usually represent giant insects. Once you do, the game will usually spawn more giant insects for you to kill, and you’ll repeat this same basic formula until the game has decided that you’ve killed enough giant insects and rewards you with the mission complete screen.

EDF 2025 is a long game, featuring more than 80 missions. Killing foes will reward you with armor upgrades, which increase your character’s maximum health, and new weapons. There are seven hundred of these spread out over the game’s four classes, and each level can be played on one of five difficulty settings ranging from Easy to Inferno. Completing the game on every difficulty with every class will take you twenty playthroughs, and that’s just if you don’t bother to try and collect all of the available weapons. If you’re a completionist, Earth Defense Force 2025 will keep you busy for a very long time without ever feeling repetitive thanks to the diversity of the game’s classes.

The Ranger, for example, is a basic foot soldier. He can be equipped with two weapons, usually an assault rifle and a rocket launcher, and is the best class for simply wading into the giant insects and destroying them. It is the easiest class to use, and the sheer size and scope of his arsenal means that he’ll always be equipped for a given situation, but the Ranger also the least unique class available to you, and most players will probably grow tired of him pretty quickly.

The Air Raider is the polar opposite of the Ranger. He’s a support class that can call down vehicles, air strikes, and focuses mostly on weapons that fire grenades detonated manually by the player. The Fencer is easily the toughest of the bunch: he’s a soldier in power armor that can carry up to four weapons at a time, including shields, which will absorb the brunt of nearly any attack. They’ve got the advantage in defense and firepower, but they pay for it with an incredibly slow movement speed and long reload times on their weapons.

"Each class plays very differently from the others, and all are viable in most of the game’s missions. For example, the Wing Diver is great for players that like to swoop in and out of combat, nimbly avoiding the giant insects while raining death from above, or for those who want to get up close and personal with the devastating energy shotgun."

My favorite, however, is the Wing Diver. Wing Divers are an all-female outfits equipped with jetpacks and energy weapons, and both draw from the same energy pool. Managing the two is key to victory with the class, because Wing Divers don’t have much armor, and rely almost completely on their unmatched mobility to stay alive.

Each class plays very differently from the others, and all are viable in most of the game’s missions. For example, the Wing Diver is great for players that like to swoop in and out of combat, nimbly avoiding the giant insects while raining death from above, or for those who want to get up close and personal with the devastating energy shotgun.

The Fencer’s unmatched defense makes it easy to wade into a sea of foes without taking much damage, but the sheer firepower available to the class also means that you can succeed by staying back and pelting enemies with chain gun fire, too. The Ranger is a good all-around choice who is just as comfortable wading into enemies with a rocket launcher as he is picking them off from a distance, and even the Air Raider, who was largely designed for the game’s multiplayer, is capable of clearing entire missions on his own thanks to his vehicles and air strikes.

Solo play is all fine and good, but EDF really shines in multiplayer. There’s a versus mode that pits two players against one another in split-screen combat, but the real meat of the offering comes from the game’s cooperative modes, which support up to four players online and two players locally. You can play through the entire campaign this way, and just as in the single-player, every class has a role to fill. This is by far the best way to play the game, especially if you have a friend on the couch next to you, but EDF still fun if you’re on your own.

"The graphics aren’t particularly great, but the environments are huge and often completely destructible, as are the enemies you’ll fight, and the most exciting missions are the ones that will have you shooting down enormous transport ships (and watching with glee as they crash into the ground in real time), or defending a beach against an army of giant robots."

The problem, if there is one, with EDF’s campaign is that it takes a while to get going. The first few missions are pretty standard, and in all honesty, more than a little boring. The gameplay is pretty simple – every class has unlimited ammo, and there’s little to the game mechanically aside from aiming and shooting – so things feel kind of dull initially, especially when the first few levels task you with shootings giant ants, and little else. Stick with it, though, the game really opens up. What will really sell EDF to most people is the sense of scale on display.

The graphics aren’t particularly great, but the environments are huge and often completely destructible, as are the enemies you’ll fight, and the most exciting missions are the ones that will have you shooting down enormous transport ships (and watching with glee as they crash into the ground in real time), or defending a beach against an army of giant robots. These are the moments that make Earth Defense Force worth playing, and the game is definitely at its best when the sense of scale exceeds your expectations and presents you with something you’ve genuinely never seen before.

Thankfully, the game is still entertaining even when the missions are more standard, largely thanks to the story and voice acting. Characters say GIANT INSECTS at every given opportunity, and put an almost unnatural emphasis on the words. The dialogue is as cheesy as it comes, and characters ham it up at every given opportunity, shouting lines like “What’s going on? Why are there GIANT INSECTS?” and “GIANT INSECTS again after seven years, but soon they’ll be an endangered species!” with reckless abandon. Cheers of “EDF! EDF! EDF!” are just as common, and you’ll even hear from a scientist who does his best to seriously educate you on the GIANT INSECTS. All of the dialogue is delivered with tongue planted firmly in check and a cascade of knowing winks. It’s clear that this is the sort of thing Sandlot was aiming for, and they pull it off well without ever forgetting why it’s successful or pushing the jokes too far.

"It’s not a great game, per se, nor is it a classic, like Them! but it is a good game that’s packed with content. The fact that characters respond to questions like, “Why’d you get married?” with “No choice,” and scream GIANT INSECTS is just icing on the cake."

The rest of the sound design is a bit inconsistent. Voices are often a little too loud and some weapons just don’t pack the auditory punch that they often should. You can tweak all of this in the options menu, which helps quite a bit, but it doesn’t change the fact that certain weapons and effects just don’t sound as good as some of the others do. It’s a minor qualm, but definitely something that you’ll notice when you realize just how puny the Ranger’s assault rifle sounds next to the Wing Diver’s energy weapons.

Despite all of its problems, however, Earth Defense Force 2025 is an enjoyable game with a lot of content, and there’s definitely something to be said for a game that eschews all of the narrative and cinematic tropes of modern shooters so you can get down to the business of shooting big bugs with ridiculous weapons.

Earth Defense Force 2025, the newest entry in the long running franchise that just released for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, just got new DLC- Beyond Despair is the third and final mission pack that will be made available for the game, and it will fittingly enough be pretty hefty, providing 20 new missions for just $8.99 (for a contrast, a Call of Duty map pack costs $15 and often only has three new maps).

Meanwhile, the first two DLC packs are still available in case you missed out on them, representing similarly good value- The Earth Defense Force 2025 Special Ops Mission Pack includes 5 extra missions for $2.99 and the Mutant Rampage Mission Pack features 20 additional missions for $8.99.

These all add even more value to a game that was already a pretty fun and safe investment to begin with- if you haven’t yet had the chance to get it, try checking it out and giving it a shot. It’s fun.

Turbo repetition to the max!

Turbo Super Stunt Squad is the official video game for DreamWorks animated-film Turbo. Unfortunately, I haven’t seen the movie so I can’t say much on how it compares to the game. However, the easiest way for me to describe this game is that it’s Tony-Hawk for kids.

Turbo Super Stunt Squad is presented quite well. The game has decent graphics and tries to match the movie’s art-style, however; it’s nowhere near the animation quality compared to the movie, which is to be expected. The soundtrack is pleasant, not annoying and fits the game well. The main menu is simple and goes well with the overall look and feel of the game. Although, the game has nowhere near the quality of a triple-A title when it comes to the presentation, but for a movie-licensed video game, it’s acceptable.

At first, the gameplay in Turbo Super Stunt Squad was a bit confusing. However, once I’ve played the tutorial mode/level, I understood the gameplay mechanics and the flow of gameplay. In Turbo Super Stunt Squad the player performs stunts, tricks, collects items and combos for high scores.

"It’s almost impossible to complete every single objective in a level, therefore, players must replay levels multiple times and hunt down objectives every time they replay the level. "

When you begin the game, you will also be able to choose different snails/characters to play as. Each Snail has different racing/stunt attributes and of course looks. However, if you want to fully finish everything in the game, you must play all the snails and complete every single objective on every level. Performing stunts in this game is quite similar to how you perform stunts in skateboard games. However, they’re much more simplified and the game is much more about collecting and completing objectives than actually performing stunts.

In one of the levels, I had to collect letters that would spell out Turbo’s name that were scattered all throughout, and it was my job to figure out how to get them. I was also timed to do this task along with other tasks. In Turbo Super Stunt Squad, you can play the levels in Free Mode or Timed Mode, but the majority of the objectives will be in Timed Mode.

It’s almost impossible to complete every single objective in a level, therefore, players must replay levels multiple times and hunt down objectives every time they replay the level. Completing every single objective can be somewhat annoying and become boring, especially if you keep failing to do so. Meanwhile, the Free Mode allows players to roam the levels freely and find other required collectibles.

"If you don’t mind playing movie licensed games, then Turbo Super Stunt Squad is actually not a terrible choice since everything is quite simple in the game to accomplish if you’re willing to go through it."

As you unlock objectives, you unlock more levels to play in. Unfortunately, Turbo: Super Stunt Squad only has a total of 5 different levels to play. Once you’ve played as all of the Snails and accomplished all of the objectives in every level, then there is not much left to do. The game doesn’t have much replay value, and the lackluster local only multiplayer mode doesn’t help it either.

The achievements in Turbo Super Stunt Squad are quite simple. The achievements range from completing the tutorial level, finishing your first objective, unlocking a new level, completing a certain amount of objectives with specific snails and of course finishing every single objective in every level as every snail, getting all the upgradeable unlocks and so on.

If you’re enjoying the game and playing it as it must be played, you will easily net your 1000 gamer score in about 10-15 hours. If you don’t mind playing movie licensed games, then Turbo Super Stunt Squad is actually not a terrible choice since everything is quite simple in the game to accomplish if you’re willing to go through it.

" It’s hard to recommend Turbo Super Stunt Squad, but if you’re looking for a game to keep kids busy then it might do the job."

Turbo Super Stunt Squad is a decent movie-licensed game. However, the repetitious gameplay flow and only 5 levels to play can easily get you bored quickly, despite the game’s decent presentation and soundtrack.

If you’re looking for quick achievements or easy trophies and don’t mind the repetitious gameplay then I highly recommend you rent the game and get it finished. It’s hard to recommend Turbo Super Stunt Squad, but if you’re looking for a game to keep kids busy then it might do the job.

See exotic aliens. Murder them indiscriminately.

D3Publisher has released a new gameplay trailer for their upcoming bug exterminating, third person action shooter Earth Defence Forces 4. This one looks at the different classes of soldier that you’ll be able to assume when smiting the alien ants and bees from beyond

Two classes – the vanilla Soldier and aerial Wing Diver – have already been seen before. However, the new additions include the Air Raider and the armoured Fencer. The former can summon vehicle drops while the other has a giant shield. We assume he’s not an actual fencer and may just be good for setting up fences. But we could be wrong (on both counts)

Earth Defence Forces 4 will be releasing July 4th for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in Japan (as Earth Defense Force 2025), but it will also make its way to Europe and North America at a later date. Stay tuned for more details as D3Publisher decides on a release date.

You got your eight-bit in my grand-theft!

There’s something that has to be said about Retro City Rampage’s parody warning screen, prior to the ridiculous montage mayhem that later develops. Its crazy and it knows that. Crazy can be a good thing, especially since developer Vblank Entertainment tries to emulate what makes open-world games like Grand Theft Auto so interesting, all the while poking some fun. I certainly don’t mind it in games like Saints Row The Third. However, how much of what is essentially satire can really hold you over?

Retro City Rampage doesn’t take itself seriously, because the whole thing is a joke. And that’s the point. Your protagonist, simply called the “Player” who lives in the cutely-pixelated locality of Theftropolis City (Ho ho!), finds himself botching a bank heist right out of a certain super hero film starring William Fichtner for approximately a whole of five minutes.

The Player ends up running into Doc Choc and his time machining car, which is now broken because… well, because you broke it. So its upto the player, to take the role of the Player, and help the Doc get the parts he needs to fix up the time-travelling vehicle to… well, I guess to go back in time and stuff. Back to the Future, something something. Oh, and one of the villains looks like Dr. Eggman from Sonic the Hedgehog.

If only the game supported a way for the player to interact and point out every reference it ever uses from a TV show, cartoon series, movie, and video game that ever came out of the 80s. Because every time I saw a reference that I’m able to recognize, I tried to make a mental note on the total count. Then I end up losing count.

As far as the references and cameos themselves go, sometimes its done in a charming way, sometimes a bit too obvious. Whether or not this is the kind of the thing that amuses you to great degrees is entirely subjective, but its rather immediate that not everyone will appreciate the kind of attention that goes into get these cheesy one-liners or nostalgia trips. But for a game that’s solely built exactly on that, Retro City Rampage is definitely one of a kind.

Its the look and feel of the game that makes it stand out, obviously channelling the spirits of the NES and Genesis generation of console gaming. Theftropolis City is a fun place to drive around in, when you’re not spending too much time mow-downing the colorful looking denizens. This is especially notable when you’ve been assigned missions to specific areas that you may have not visited before. As more missions are completed, new arcade-style challenges unlock, where you’ll be given a pre-determined weapon, and asked to rack up the kill count before time runs out. Missions tied to the story will help you progress further to unlock more missions and side-activities. But more on that later!

For the most part, Retro City Rampage is played from a top-down perspective view. Shooting in the game has a familiar feel, mimicking something you’d see in a twin-stick shooter. You can either use the right thumbstick on the control pad to shoot in all directions, or hold down on the X button to lock on a specific target. Projectile-based weapons provide good thrills, but you won’t find anything truly outrageous to complement the overall crazy tone. Melee-weapons, though, say otherwise, at least on the surface. But punching and swinging with them doesn’t share the kind of gleefulness that you get from a peashooter. Great variety of drivable vehicles though, especially if you like piloting a giant ape. Just don’t expect any aircrafts.

And speaking of relying on close-combat, I wasn’t really a fan of the jump-stomp. This was particularly annoying towards the end game, fighting wave after wave of enemies with your bare fists, then having to use a baseball. Sorry, but once you’ve given me a proton pack with a room filled with demonic gogo dancers, I’m already spoiled. Much of this can be said about the missions. Some of them have quirky set pieces and ideas, others feel repetitive. There’s only so many “Go to this location, deck this guy, here’s some witty banter, now go here” I can really put up with. Thought I do greatly enjoy one particular homage to a certain platformer from Twisted Pixel Games.

Art wise, it’s still impressive to see how a lot of the older 8-bit/16-bit titles are translated, yet seemingly tied together. While a lot of the game still takes place in Theftropolis City, more exotic locations can either be found on the outskirts, or through specific missions. The scenery is littered with detailed sprites, complemented by snarky signboards and hey, there’s even a subway system! If you’re a fan of chiptunes, Retro City Rampage provides a good assortment of beats. You can even download a free “Demo Mixtape” at their website.
