Spike Chunsoft confirms its visual novel series has hit another sales milestone, with 3 million of its total sales coming on PC.

The Danganronpa games are pretty niche, but they’ve carved out a sizeable (and dedicated) audience for themselves over the years, and have seen pretty solid sales. Recently, they hit another important sales milestone, with Spike Chunsoft announcing (via Gematsu) that the Danganronpa series has now shipped over 5 million copies worldwide, as of the end of September 2021.

Of those 5 million units shipped, more than half (roughly 3 million) have sold on PC. Of those 3 million, Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc and Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair have each sold over a million units on the platform.

With Danganronpa Decadence launching for the Nintendo Switch on December 3, that number will likely see a boost in the near future. The collection will include the three mainline games, alongside the new board game-style title Danganronpa S: Ultimate Summer Camp. Upon launch, all four games can also be purchased separately via the Nintendo Switch eShop.

Spike Chunsoft also says it plans on “further expanding the Danganronpa franchise with games in various genres and more.”

Experimentation has led to some of the best games over the years, and these hypothetical experiments in particular could do just the same.

There’s something to be said about franchises that know what they’re good at, and focus on that with undivided attention as they look to hone and refine that single formula and style. It’s not that these franchises haven’t experimented every now and then – either with mainline sequels, or spinoffs, or maybe even both – but they’re still usually associated with very particular genres.

But that doesn’t mean there’s no other way they could be successful. There are plenty of franchises out there that we’d like to see branch out and try new things. In this feature, we’ll be listing fourteen video game franchises, and talk about different genres from the one they usually subscribe to that we think would actually work pretty well for them. We’re not going for completely off-rails combinations here – you won’t see us talking about a possible kart racing God of War game in here – and we’ll try to talk only about franchise-genre combinations that we think would actually make sense for the former.

So with that all out of the way, let’s get started.

POKEMON AS MMO

A Pokemon MMORPG is something that people have been dreaming about for years now, and multiple developments in recent months have only solidified the notion that that’s something that would actually work very well. For starters, Pokemon’s mainline games have refused to grow and evolve too much over the years, so at this point, most people are desperate for something fresh. More importantly though, we already have a perfect example of how good a Pokemon-style MMO would be in Crema’s Temtem. That’s not a game without its own issues by any means, but it does prove something we’ve all been shouting about at the top of our voices for some time- that a Pokemon template is actually very well suited to the MMO space.

These guys just always had a charisma we could never hope to match.

We weren’t supposed to be rooting for these guys, were we? Games of old would be able to get by with a generic mad doctor, trying to take over the world with his robots because he could, or a mad turtle king capturing the princess in another castle. But as games grew, the villains that were needed to motivate players to the end had to grow with them, many times being given a charisma, sass and outright draw to them that wasn’t shared by the player character. Did we miss any of your favourites? Leave them in the comments and talk about them!

Vaas – Far Cry 3

The intimidating Vaas steals the show of Far Cry 3 for very good reason, this unhinged madman just visually looks like he’s hanging onto reality with a fingernail, and has a presence that both works as the foil to white bread Jason Brody and helps to goad the player into furthering their quest. Each time Vaas gets the upper hand on the player, he just toys with them, leaving both Jason and the player living through him all the more determined to finish the adventure, until he gets them again. Do you know the definition of insanity?

DanganRonpa V3 has also been added to the Steam bundle to celebrate this success.

Spike Chunsoft’s gleefully, psychopathically self aware visual novel series, DanganRonpa, has been a pretty big success as far as visual novels go. Apparently, that extends to the series’ showings on PC too, where DanganRonpa 1+2 have collectively sold over 200,000 copies since their launch.

That’s a lot of despair—and to add to it all, Spike Chunsoft has announced that it will also be adding DanganRonpa V3, the hugely divisive third entry in the series, will be added to the bundle containing the first two games on PC as well. For $90, you can now get all three games on PC (which saves you some $10 from if you were trying to buy them all separately).

I can’t recommend the DanganRonpa series enough, especially if you haven’t looked into it already. The three games are available, in addition to PC, on PS Vita and PS4 as well. Make sure to play them all, preferably in order.

Along with some of the bigger names, PlayStation Experience saw a number of other announcements that should keep fans busy when they eventually release.

These include remasters of games like PaRappa The Rapper, Patapon and Locoroco; a new Danganronpa; the return of the Ys series with Ys Origin; the announcement of YAGER’s Dreadnought being exclusive to the PS4 for its console release; a mysterious new adventure title called Vane; fighting game/MMO Absolver; and Nex Machina, the latest title to come from Housemarque of Resogun fame. That’s not including a ton of other indies (like Strafe) that were seen in passing.

And for all the PlayStation Vita players, you’ll be happy to know that some of these games will be heading to the handheld in the coming year.

Spike Chunsoft are the newest Japanese publisher to hop aboard the Steam gravy train.

DanganRonpa: Trigger Happy Havoc, the PlayStation Vita exclusive (excellent) visual novel, has already been confirmed to be making an appearance on PC via a Steam release. And now, its excellent (and better) sequel, DanganRonpa 2: Goodbye Despair will also be getting a PC release soon- Japanese publisher Spike Chunsoft have confirmed that they plan on releasing DanganRonpa 2 on Steam as well.

This is already good news for PC players, as there is a massive fanbase for Japanese games and for visual novels on Steam, and DanganRonpa is both. But Spike Chunsoft isn’t going to stop just here- the company has confirmed that this is only just the start of its PC support, and that more of its games will be coming to Steam eventually.

That just makes me giddy. What other games could make the jump? The Zero Escape series? Mystery Dungeon? The upcoming DanganRonpa 3? Don’t hold back, Spike, don’t hold back at all.

Sony’s TGS conference is almost here, and we already have reason to be hyped for it. But it looks like there may be more coming at the conference than even what we could already have guessed or speculated. Gematsu reports that the official Danganronpa KoubaibuTwitter account is teasing a Danganronpa announcement for tomorrow’s SCEJA Press Conference in Japan.

With SCEJA Press Conference 2015 and Tokyo Game Show 2015 and the Hope’s Peak Academy Koubaibu Gakudai-Ban, there’s a lot happening this week… I wonder why it’s all being piled on at a time like this?” the tweet said.

Even DanganRonpa’s creator, Yoshinori Terasawa, joined in on the fun, saying, “This is being streamed, right? It was starting at 16:00, is that right? Is it bad if I don’t see it? Will I get the feeling that I missed something? (lol).”

I mean, guys, that’s a pretty heavy handed hint that you should definitely watch the show if you are interested in DanganRonpa. Which you really should be, they are probably the best games on the Vita outside of Persona 4 Golden.

That's for the entire franchise, just to be clear.

Last year, NIS America released DanganRonpa as well as its sequel, DanganRonpa 2, exclusively for the PlayStation Vita. By all accounts, these were niche games that should have, at best, garnered a cult following, and then sunk without a trace- they were visual novel games (a genre that has traditionally been unpopular in the west), anime styled (at a time when more and more games are adopting the western aesthetic), and exclusive to the PlayStation Vita (a platform that is dead, and has no retailer support in the west).

Instead, they went on to become unexpected critical and yes, commercial successes- today, NISA announced that the combined sales of the games in the west are now at 200,000 units.

“Combined sales of the first two Danganronpa titles – Trigger Happy Havoc and Goodbye Despair – now total more than 200,000 across Europe and the US,” NISA told MCV.

“That’s just on PS Vita – it’s quite an impressive number.”

It definitely is, and it warms my heart to see these games being successful. Both titles (the second more than the first, but the first was great too) are the most compelling game experiences I have had in a very long time.

The future bodes well for DanganRonpa in the west too- the action game spin off based on the series, Another Episode, will be launching exclusively on the PS Vita later this year. In Japan, developers Spike Chunsoft have already begun work on a proper DanganRonpa 3.

May it be every bit as amazing as the other games in this franchise have been so far.
