Whether it’s an appetite for adrenaline, an addiction for tension, or sadistic curiosity, horror games continue to scare us.

Establishing how much fear can a game conjure in the name of entertainment is wholly subjective. Our nightmares aren’t collective. With this in mind, the top horror games on this list are deeply varied – cosmic nightmares, haunted houses, malevolence, gore, and hostility, it’s all here in ghoulish splendour. And, in a move which opens us up to rampant criticism, this rundown is presented in order, from chilling to terrifying.

Still Wakes the Deep

A shoo-in for scariest game of 2024 so far, Still Wakes the Deep duties you as electrician Caz aboard a bleak, ocean-rusting North Sea oil rig before an accident occurs and situations go awry. It’s best not to know too much before stepping aboard, but safe to say The Chinese Room have delivered an atmospheric horror for the ages, replete in equal measure dread and mystery.

Critically-acclaimed indie survival horror game Darkwood is now available on the PS5, and it's using DualSense features like adaptive triggers and haptic feedback.

Critically-acclaimed indie survival horror game Darkwood is out now on PS5. The game has also been update to make use of some of the PS5’s features, including the DualSense controller.

Darkwood on the PS5 runs at 4K resolution, and makes use of the DualSense controller’s adaptive triggers, haptic feedback and sound effects. Those who have already played the game on PS4 can also transfer their save files to the PS5 version of the game.

Originally released on PC in 2017, Darkwood is a survival horror game with a top-down camera angle that’s unique for its genre. It takes place somewhere in the Soviet Bloc where the player has been trapped for an undetermined amount of time.

Darkwood features a day/night cycle that has been deeply integrated into its gameplay. During the day, the player can leave their shelter to scavenge for supplies and unlock new areas. At night, the player will have to defend themselves from intruders and monsters.

Darkwood is available on just about every system out there, with a PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch release happpening back in 2019.

Horror comes in many flavors, and the past few years have seen some terrifying new games emerge. Check out all of them here.

It’s always good to look back on some of the best horror games the industry has had to offer through the years and decades. Some titles have left a permanent mark, their legacy cemented by the effectiveness of their scares. Others may be lesser known but are no less terrifying despite their mechanics and presentation. Let’s look at 15 of the best horror games of all time. Be warned though – several of these games aren’t for the squeamish or faint of heart.

Darkwood

Despite having over 12,000 user reviews on Steam and good critical acclaim, Darkwood is still somewhat of a niche survival horror title. Its open-world structure changes during the day, presenting eerie characters and various secrets as you scavenge for materials. At night, nightmarish creatures roam, prompting you to fight for survival. It’s frantic and doesn’t provide too much guidance, but Darkwood is worth sticking with for its unique aesthetic and extensive lore.

The top down survival horror game is coming soon to consoles.

Darkwood, the survival horror game from Acid Wizard Studios, was released on PC in August of 2017 after several years of early access. The company has wanted to bring the game to consoles for a while, and it was announced for the Nintendo Switch on Nintendo’s last indie-focused Direct. But today, publisher Crunching Koalas announced it would be coming to all three major consoles this month.

As you can see from the trailer, the game is in a top down style. The story takes place somewhere in the Soviet Bloc with characters who have been trapped there for an undetermined amount of time. The game features a day and night system, where you scavenge and unlock new areas during the day and defend against intruders and monsters during the night. It also includes NPCs, interactions with whom influences the story and its ending.

Darkwood will release for PlayStation 4 on May 14th, Switch on May 16th, and Xbox One on May 17th. It is available now for PC and Mac.
