And yes, that means Touch Fight mode.

Not too long ago, Team Ninja teased us with a new Dead or Alive project it had been working on. It has since turned out to be Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate, which will release on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 this Fall.

Some of the new additions to the game include Momiji, originally from the hack and slash Ninja Gaiden series, as a playable character. There will also be a new stage in Sky Tokyo, and the game will also feature content from the recent Dead or Alive 5 Plus, the PlayStation Vita port of the original game. So you can count on seeing new moves, music customization and yes, the new Touch Fight mode.

The Touch Fight mode allowed players to use the Vita’s touchscreen for attacking and executing combos from a first person perspective. So we’re curious about how it’ll work for the console releases. Maybe for Kinect and Move users? We’ll update you with more details as they become available.

Great fighting port with a little lack of quality visuals.

D

ead or Alive is a fighting series that is a fighting series that is known for good graphics and most of all good core fighting mechanics. Dead or Alive 5 is the 5th main game in the series, however, Dead or Alive 5+ is a well-done port that adds exclusive additions such as training +, touch fight mode, portability, more costumes and quicker load times. At its core, it is a fighting game with a somewhat interesting story mode, 24 characters to play with and cross-play features. In this review, I will cover the core gameplay, graphics and its overall appeal.

The Core Gameplay and Content:

Dead or Alive 5+ continues the trend as it always did with the previous titles from the series. The core fighting system of the series is the countering system. A skilled player can easily counter any opponent’s move and punish them in return, that is how most Dead or Alive games are played all throughout. The gameplay is fast-paced and the fighting always feels fluid and fun. I don’t really have that many complains about its gameplay system, if you enjoyed previous Dead or Alive games then you will enjoy this one just as much and you will know what to expect.

Dead or Alive 5+ introduces environments that have something called “Danger Zones”. If the player manages to combo their opponent into a danger zone, they will trigger a cool dynamic environment change. These environmental changes add a nice cinematic feel throughout the fight and add tension to the game. The game also has an option to turn on/off the danger zone, which is nice if you just want to play traditionally.

The game features a somewhat lengthy story mode that feels overall cheesy and obnoxious most of the time. With a ton of in-game cut-scenes, it is nice to see developers trying to have an interesting story in a fighting game, but to be completely honest; I could care less about the story. I am more interested in beating the crap out of my opponents in single-player campaign to unlock new outfits, play against other players online or try to beat my friends in a versus match.

The touch fight mode is an interesting addition for the PS’s Vita touch capabilities. As the name implies this mode will take you in first-person, perspective and you can start swiping and tapping your fingers on the screen to deal damage to your opponent. The touch fight mode feels gimmicky while an interesting concept, it does not really work that well and just feels kind of cheap and dodgy. I tried this mode a couple of times and just could not get into it, maybe someone else will find a better way to implement touch mechanics in the future.

Training + mode is much better than the original console version and the addition of combo trials is awesome. If you are trying to practice and perfect your counter-moves and learn your character’s frame-date then Training + is the place to do it.

Dead or Alive 5+ does have cross-Save and Cross-Play features. With Cross-Play, you can play against PlayStation 3 players on your PlayStationVita and vice versa. Cross-Save let’s you save your game content/progress across both systems without a hassle. However, the game does not support Cross-Buy unfortunately, but if you buy DLC for one version, the other version gets it too.

Graphics and Sound:

The graphics of the game suffers a little bit because the developer tried to achieve a smooth buttery frame-rate of 60 FPS. Lack of Anti-Aliasing and lower-resolution textures are noticeable, but the game still looks good for a handheld system. The 60 FPS really make up for the small compromises of the console graphics, but I personally think they still could have achieved higher resolution textures and had a better-looking port. However, since the core of the port is good then I cannot really complain much.

The game provides both English and Japanese voice-overs for all of the characters, the soundtrack fits the game well and all of the sound design is well done. The Dead or Alive 5 + version also adds the ability to completely change the music suite to your liking.

Overall

Dead or Alive 5+ is a great fighting port. I really do not have any big problems with it, my only complaint is the cheesy story mode and the dumped down visuals. If you like Dead or Alive then you will like this, if you do not like Dead or Alive then you will not like this port either. However, if you want a good fighting game on the go, then give this game a chance for your PlayStation Vita. Fan of fighting games, but never played Dead or Alive? Training + will help you to get into the series and understand the fighting mechanics of the game.

In a nutshell, Dead or Alive 5 + is a successful port that any Dead or Alive fan should consider purchasing.

This game was reviewed on the PlayStation Vita.

Take a look at the new touch screen controls and training modes.

Tecmo Koei and Team Ninja have released a new trailer for the upcoming Dead or Alive 5 Plus, the port of the PS3/Xbox 360 fighting game released in 2012. Despite the overall limited impact of the console versions, Team Ninja is looking for the PS Vita port to gain significantly more ground.

The PS Vita port will support Cross Save and Cross Play features for PS3 and PS Vita. The former means that players can save their games on one platform and pick up where they left off on the other. The latter allows players on the Vita and PS3 to face each other, regardless of location.

Along with the usual roster of fighting favourites, Dead or Alive 5 Plus will also feature new touch-based controls for fights, 60 frames per second speed and brand new training options – all for the sake of decimating foes.

DOA 5 Plus is scheduled to release on March 19th in North America and March 22nd in Europe for PS Vita.

Touch Fighting also looks quite intriguing, for novelty value.

Dead or Alive 5 might not have panned out so great on the Xbox 360 and PS3 – being the first game in the series since the departure of founder Tomonobu Itagaki – but Team Ninja is going full steam ahead with the Playstation Vita version.

Dead or Alive 5 Plus aims to bring the experience to handhelds, and judging by the new trailer, does a fabulous job of that.

The frame rate and rock solid graphics are obviously the appeal but the trailer also showcases Touch Fighting, which allows you to fight from a first person perspective against an opponent using the Vita’s touch screen.

The usual cross play and cross save feature between the Vita and PS3 versions will be enabled, given the announcements about DLC being shared across both systems and the popularity of said concept with fighting games these days. Dead or Alive 5 Plus will be releasing March 22nd for the Playstation Vita.

Team Ninja’s upcoming port Dead or Alive 5 Plus for the Playstation Vita is heavily playing up its cross-platform features.

Aside from cross-platform matches between the PS3 and PS Vita versions, players will also have a chance to share saved game and purchases across both titles.

Releasing on March 22nd, Team Ninja has confirmed that cross-platform battles will run on at 60 frames per second on both platforms with no lag or slowdown.

All characters unlocked on PS3 can be used on the Vita version and vice versa, and there will be indicators to tell if some one is playing on PS3 or Vita, which extends to in-game rankings.

All DLC purchases will be preserved across both platforms and players can use the same saved games to cross-play between platforms. To top it off, any new stages available on DOA 5 for PS3 will also be available on the PS Vita.

Will this be enough to revive DOA 5’s sagging popularity? We’ll find out when the game releases in March.

Yosuke Hayashi has announced Dead or Alive 5 for the Playstation Vita which is scheduled for release next year. The game looks great on the Vita as shown by Hayashi himself. The game was released on the PS3 and Xbox 360 earlier this year and our review praised the game.

It’s a fighter franchise in case you don’t know and such games have been pretty great on the Vita as evident by our Street Fighter X Tekken review.

Hayashi didn’t reveal a lot of information on the game but he said that it will be released soon and they are planning a lot of features for the PS Vita version of the game.
