It's a disappointing showing this month.

Xbox Live Games with Gold was really good for a while, routinely clowning Sony’s offerings for PS Plus on a monthly basis. However, it’s gotten a bit less impressive over the last few months; and sadly, this month’s batch of games does nothing to reverse that trend.

This month, the headlining games on the Xbox One are Tales from the Borderlands and Trackmania Turbo. They’re both good games- but they’re just that, good games. Games with Gold has set such a high standard for itself it is disappointing to see it not meet its own bar. It is also disappointing that no games that could showcase the Xbox One X are included in this month’s batch.

Over on the Xbox 360 front, you can play Nights Into Dreams and Deadfall Adventures– both of these, as always, are also playable on the Xbox One, via backward compatibility.

Let’s hope Sony’s showing is better than this (and that Microsoft picks up the pace again from next month).

The Farm 51 may be busy with its upcoming action title Get Even but its other action adventure game Deadfall Adventures, which released last year for the Xbox 360 and PS3, will be heading to the PS3 on October 29th. The game was originally supposed to be out this past summer but faced a short delay.

Deadfall Adventures is very much in the vein of old Indiana Jones movies where you explore various ruins spread across Egypt and the Arctic, among other locations, while avoiding traps and fighting off Nazi soldiers. The PS3 version includes a bunch of improvements such as new areas, exclusive DLC mode with additional maps and some new boss fights. There’s also an improved mthod for levelling up.

Despite the solid premise, Deadfall Adventures received poor reviews for the PC and Xbox 360. Could the PS3 version improve on it? We’ll find out later this month so stay tuned for more information.

Classic FPS fun

Nordic games have released their second trailer in the planned three trailer series in anticipation of the release of their upcoming action first person shooter, Deaffall Adventures. Deadfall Adventures releases on November 15th on the Xbox 360.

This trailer, which depicts The Arctic level, gives viewers a look a what we can expect from the ice-riddled level. The various environments, camps, caves, and bases all look to be quite a bit of fun to traverse. And the weapons look awesome. As far as what we can see of the actual game play, it looks like we are in store for some classic action FPS fun.

In Deadfall Adventures, gamers will play as James Lee Quartermain as he traverses his way through the arctic tundra while fighting both nazis and zombies. On top of the game’s inherent game play challenges, the Arctic brings with it a number of environmental difficulties that will force gamers to stay on their toes.

As long as Nolan North isn't voicing anyone, Deadfall Adventures can do what ever it wants.

It’s 1938 and you play as James Quatermain, great-grandson of one of the world’s greatest adventures Allan Quartermain. Just like his grandfather James Quartermain is also an adventurer, but unlike his grandfather he doesn’t believe in the superstitious tales that popularized his grandfather’s journeys.

Taking on an adventure of escorting the young and keen US Agent, Jennifer Goodwin on a trip across the globe, the aim of this roller coaster of a journey is to find an ancient artifact known as the Heart of Atlantis. Despite his disbelief in the magical properties that are said to be contained within the artifact, James goes along with this charade and winds up going head to head with a group of Nazis, hellbent on seeking the artifact for themselves.

"The game's credibility should be seen as something which holds true from it's translation of the book medium into a game, rather than a game it just so happens to resemble. Besides who said a "first-person Uncharted" could ever be a bad thing?"

Without a doubt Deadfall will be labeled by many as a “First-person Uncharted Wannabe”. But the fact that the Uncharted series is essentially a Tomb Raider for the modern era, and tries so hard to imitate Indiana Jones, this defends Deadfall from being a rip-off, seeing as Deadfall is based on H.R. Haggard’s Quartermain books which where written in the late 1800’s to the early 1900’s.

The universe for this series was already set in stone long before Nathan Drake was even in diapers. The game’s credibility should be seen as something which holds true from it’s translation of the book medium into a game, rather than a game it just so happens to resemble. Besides who said a “first-person Uncharted” could ever be a bad thing?

There’s no getting away from the fact that the game’s main menu is directly taking ques from Uncharted’s universe. This is obvious within the game audio, background scenery, and the overall vibe that you’ve been here, seen this, and done that before. Assuming you’ve already played those games that is. The main menu gives you the option to adjust both the game’s difficulty and puzzle difficulty separately, seeing as the game places a heavy emphasis on puzzle solving it’s worth taking this into account. How well the game pulls these puzzle elements off is another story entirely.

"The notebook basically solves the puzzles of the game by pointing you in the right direction through the use of highlighted environmental objects. It appears as a tacked in version of detective mode seen in Rocksteady's Batman Arkham series."

Including the main star of the game, James Quartermain, the game does nothing to extend on character development or build any form of attachment or bond with the other characters in the game. James is about as interesting as water is to goldfish. The failure to extend on his character lets the game down, and where the game’s strengths are noticeably exceptional in other parts, it’s a shame. This is no different for Jame’s companions either. By the time you reach the third hour of the game you’ll come to the conclusion that the most conversation you’ll ever receive from the supporting roles, are nothing more than repetitive dialogue attempting to resolve puzzles and environmental obstacles. Jennifer Goodwin’s lackluster lines caused me to mute the television due to the repetition in her dialogue and the unbalancing of puzzle difficulty.

The star of the game is the adventure mode itself, with a thrown in multi-player and survival mode. As mentioned before the game plays in first-person, but gives itself a little more depth in terms of what’s actually seen on screen. It’s apparent to you that this is a first-person shooter but the ability to hold a torch, notebook, and a compass in combination with your arsenal of guns delivers that added touch and well placed design, of being an adventurer.

Playing the game on an easy setting, the level of difficulty within the puzzles hold no consistency whatsoever. While some prove to be a frustrating obstacle others tend to be a hit or miss that will have you frozen in time, or progress ahead with luck. The notebook basically solves the puzzles of the game by pointing you in the right direction through the use of highlighted environmental objects. It appears as a tacked in version of detective mode seen in Rocksteady’s Batman Arkham series.

"Fights with the supernatural beings of the games such as Mummies are what give the game its strides. Although dealing with such creatures runs on the Alan Wake formula of "Here's a torch, they're creatures of darkness and evil, shine and shoot" it's actually more enjoyable than facing human foes and is a nice change of pace."

This provides no sense of accomplishment whatsoever and should have just been titled “Auto-Solve”. But the constant fluctuation of difficulty that ranges from one puzzle to the next had me up in arms at times. The puzzle’s attempt to hold a positive and valid reason for being in the game lies, within its encouragement for getting you to explore the game’s environment and interact with it.

But this falls flat in some places as some paths and new found routes are essentially empty and pointless. The game’s attempt to balance action and combat with that of the puzzle sections is a failure. Combat scenarios are often the cause of you trying to reach a certain destination only to be held off by thugs and henchmen. These set of brainless goons wouldn’t know the meaning of A.I. and they could learn a thing or two from the supernatural enemies that turn up later on in the game.

While it could be said that this was down to the game’s difficulty setting of being played on easy, it doesn’t do anything to justify the reasoning for appalling combat. Fights with the supernatural beings of the games such as Mummies are what give the game its strides. Although dealing with such creatures runs on the Alan Wake formula of “Here’s a torch, they’re creatures of darkness and evil, shine and shoot” it’s actually more enjoyable than facing human foes and is a nice change of pace.

"When the opportunity arose for me to upgrade my gear I only did so for the sake of feeling obliged too. I could have just as easily progressed through the game in the same manner that I was doing so before."

You will even find yourself retreating at times as the overall theme of the game does well to present them as a threat. When you’re doing battle with these enemies the design of the environment gives the vibe of arena-based combat. This allows it to be distinctive in contrast to other shooters, and the environmental traps at your disposal give you an aid and provide alot of variety.

Exploration makes sense in this game and feels like you are doing so, and although it holds no bars to that of the original Tomb Raider games, it doesn’t feel shoved in neither. It’s not open world but neither is it linear, it feels just right. This miniature freedom to explore rewards you with finding collectible treasures in a game where it fits right in. It’s still there to serve the needy and gimmicky of finding things in video games, but it also feels right at home. I did encounter one glitch in the game in that I fell while rotating a frozen bridge, only to be trapped on the floor below with no way back and one bullet left in my pistol. Had this been a real adventure it would have been the ultimate death wish. Freeze to death or pull the trigger, and after 2 minutes wondering the frozen circle of glitch I pulled back a grenade.

Upgrades to Quartermain’s weapons and flashlight can be achieved by finding hidden treasures throughout the game’s environments, then visiting upgrade locations. Upgrades move at a slow pace and the feeling that your upgrades are making a difference feels largely abundant. When the opportunity arose for me to upgrade my gear I only did so for the sake of feeling obliged too. I could have just as easily progressed through the game in the same manner that I was doing so before.

"Traveling from the dusty pyramids of Egypt onto treacherous jungles and the icy tombs of the arctic, the game's visuals go through a rather massive change up, and manages to remain beautiful in all of its content. Working hand in hand with music cues and sound effects, the atmosphere that's passed onto the player can be immense at times."

Your arsenal of weapons are those that exist within its time. You are provided with the usual classes of guns like an assault rifle, shotguns, pistols, and rifles of the late 1930s. Some may find this unusual in comparison to the onslaught of modern and futuristic military shooters that swamp the current gaming generation. But the change of gun play here feels fresh and a joy to play. With the selection of weapons available to you, choices of other weapons exist within that class range. So while you’re never starved for weapons and have plenty of variety, you can also dual-wield your pistols, melee a combat knife and pick up those of fallen enemies.

Traveling from the dusty pyramids of Egypt onto treacherous jungles and the icy tombs of the arctic, the game’s visuals go through a rather massive change up, and manages to remain beautiful in all of its content. Working hand in hand with music cues and sound effects, the atmosphere that’s passed onto the player can be immense at times. Not once do you question the authenticity of the game’s level design, as each and every section feels true to the environment in which it’s trying to replicate. In short, exploring a pyramid feels like Egypt, and trying to find your way out from an icy tomb is chilling.

It’s easy to point out which parts could have taken more effort or gone the extra mile, but overall the game looks amazing. PC gamers will be pleased to know it’s fairly scalable across the graphical options, and will run on on modern computer. Though the game is no Crysis it’s decent for what its worth and looks great regardless.

"In a game which puts the majority of its resources and focus on delivering a strong story in its single player campaign, the need to throw in a mulltiplayer felt exactly how it sounds, thrown in."

Despite the option to play with a game pad rather than a mouse and keyboard, the game provides no options for sensitivity or button remapping. The controls remain standard however and are largely no different from any other first-person shooter.

In a game which puts the majority of its resources and focus on delivering a strong story in its single player campaign, the need to throw in a mulltiplayer felt exactly how it sounds, thrown in. This is a game where the story is where the heart is and while multiplayer carries over some of its features, and the influence is present. It’s not something that’s wanted or will be highlighted in a discussion among peers.

The multiplayer problem that exists within many of today’s shooters is down to the person and preference. Some may find the single-player campaign to be somewhat of an amazement but will undoubtedly drift to another game for a multiplayer experience. The game takes its own spin on the traditional modes of the multiplayer in first-person shooters, but doesn’t do enough to make it stand out or bring anything new to the table. A Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, and Capture the flag are all here, and they prove to be nothing more than an entree to the main course which is the campaign mode.

This game was reviewed on the PC.

Deadfall Adventures is a new third person action game being developed by Nordic Games for Xbox 360 and PC; the first trailer for the game just came out, and yow, it looks almost suspiciously like the PlayStation exclusive Uncharted games. The supiciousness gets more suspicious when you consider PlayStation is the one format this game isn’t coming out on.

In any case, it looks fairly interesting, if standard and cookie cutter, on its own merits. One thing it very obviously lacks is the visual finesse and panache that Naughty Dog can bring to the Uncharted games, which Nordic Games, it seems, cannot. Ah, the difference a budget can make.

Deadfall Adventures will release November 15 for the Xbox 360 and PC; the Digital Deluxe Edition of the game is now available and can be pre-ordered for the same price as the Standard Edition. Stay tuned to GamingBolt for more coverage of the game.

Deadfall Adventures is a first person action adventure game developed by The Farm 51 (of Painkiller: Hell & Damnation) and published by Nordic Games.

Originally set to release on June 30th 2013, the game was pushed back and was instead released on September 27th 2013 for Xbox 360 and PC.

+ Quick Jump To

1. Development

2. Story

3. Gameplay

Development

Deadfall Adventures has been developed using Unreal Engine 3. This helped in designing the game’s environments, lending a lush, detailed feel to the proceedings, and allowed for constructing big set pieces. [reference]

It is reportedly inspired by action adventure books and movies such as Indiana Jones and adventurer Allan Quartermain (from the novels written by Henry Rider Haggard). Comparisons have been made to Naughty Dog’s Uncharted series as well, but as producer Artur Falkowski states, “Comparisons are inevitable here, but it is a FPS after all and this affects many things in the gameplay. We didn’t want to just tell a story, but rather to make the player feel like a real adventurer.”

Falkowski stated that the team worked hard on the story from the beginning, researching popular films and even taking assistance from movie industry professionals to capture the genre’s tone and look. “We created the whole mythology based on popular legends, myths and beliefs. Then we added some hilarious dialogues, because in this kind of tale the humor is a must. Our story is rich but not too complicated. We mixed the fantastic elements with historical events such as the sea travels to the New World from the 16th century, organized by the King of Spain. Also as we mentioned, the hero is a great-grandson of a famous explorer, Allan Quatermain.” [reference]

A lot of research was also put into how the Nazis would go about searching and collection for treasure, in order to give a realistic representation of what was possible in that era. Other aspects such as weapons, equipment and many other things pertaining to the era were also researched.

Speaking about aspects such as dual wielding weapons, Falkowski emphasized that “We were looking for something which could emphasize the feeling of taking part in a crazy pulp adventure movie.” Taking place from the first person perspective means that the protagonist would only been seen in cut-scenes. The goal with Deadfall Adventures was to tell a good adventure story, and have the player “feel like a hero and not just watch his avatar”. Managing director at Nordic Games, Klemens Kreuzer stated that the game “marries the ethos of the Saturday morning matinee with the Summer blockbuster to create an original adventure which will grip players from start to finish.”

As for the game being delayed until September, Nordic Games’ Reinhard Pollice stated that, “This is our most ambitious game to date and we’re working very closely alongside The Farm 51 to make sure that Deadfall Adventures provides players with seamless action and puzzle-solving experience. Holding back the game’s release until September is the right decision for us to ensure that the content included offers the greatest value for players, which it certainly will.” [reference] Time was also taken to add a survival co-op mode for action outside of the campaign.

In regards to whether there would be a PlayStation 3 version any time soon, Pollice revealed that, We will evaluate that once we have free resources. I don’t want to confirm or deny that it will come at any time to a PlayStation platform.” [reference].

Pollice also stated that there will be advanced graphics and control options for PC players which will allow them to play on multiple system configurations. However, Falkowski stated that “we don’t want to make any version of the game better or different. It’s the experience which matters and this should be the same on PC and on Xbox 360.”[reference].

Story

The story takes place in the year 1938, with players assuming the role of famous adventurer Allan Quartermain’s great-grandson, James Lee Quatermain. James’s goal is to play escort to a US agent as they travel to Egypt in search for “The Heart of Atlantis”. Along the way, rival organizations such as the Nazis and Russians will be looking to obtain this device for their own purposes. Other supernatural elements such as mummies will also be playing a part in the quest for The Heart of Atlantis.

Despite being a simple man, James is described as being very misanthropic and dismissive of the occult and supernatural. However, he is a “strong protagonist” and one who believes in helping others. Along with Egypt, it was been reported that other locations such as the Arctic will be explored. It has also been revealed by Falkowski that, “Apart from that, Nazis as the bad guys are a common motive in the genre, so they just needed to be here. They aren’t the main villains in the story though.”

Gameplay

Deadfall Adventures takes place from the first person perspective and has been described as “an experience of being a famous explorer”. The game will feature many puzzle elements, but also running, gunning, exploration and platforming sequences. There will also be cut-scenes advancing the story, which allow the player to get a better look at protagonist James Lee Quartermain. Along with 30 different weapons – which include pistols, shotguns and rifles – there will be many weapons from the World War II era. Some rare weapons have also been reported to figure in the game.

James will be able to gather treasure, and using this will allow him to upgrade both his base stats and weapons. You’ll be able to improve your aiming, reload speed, stamina, health, damage and much more. [reference] The game will also feature a survival co-op mode, which allows for instant action play.

One on one conversation with The Farm 51 and Nordic Games.

Games with a great a storyline and an interesting cast of characters are a rarity these days. This is precisely the reason why games like Uncharted and the recent reboot of Tomb Raider have become a massive success. Not all gamers enjoy a five hour single player campaign like Call of Duty. Some want to invest their time and money into a game that provides immersion.

The Farm 51, developers of the upcoming first person action adventure game: Deadfall Adventures are planning to do the same. Although it seems heavily inspired by the Uncharted franchise, it still feels pretty different. We got in touch with Artur Falkowski, and Wojciech Pazdur, Producer and Development Director at The Farm 51 respectively. Reinhard Pollice, Business & Product Development Director, Nordic Games also chipped in with his thoughts.

We had a chat about how the game is going to be different , the weapons, cinematic experience and how they plan to suck the player right in the experience.

Check out the full interview below.

Deadfall Adventures looks great, but there are many comparisons that have been drawn to Naughty Dog’s Uncharted series; were the comparisons inevitable? Were you prepared for them?

AF: Our game is inspired by the same genre of books and movies, so comparisons are inevitable here, but it is a FPS after all and this affects many things in the gameplay. We didn’t want to just tell a story, but rather to make the player feel like a real adventurer.

RP: I think it’s inevitable but Uncharted had a lot of focus on jump and run passages whereas we have real puzzles. By having a first person view we can also have a deeper shooting experience where the action gets transported in a better way.

"One day someone from the team suggested: let’s add dual wielding! It isn’t realistic, but could give you lots of fun."

- Artur Falkowski, Producer, The Farm 51

The first person perspective is what seems to differentiate it from Uncharted; for a title with a focus on puzzles and platforming, what prompted a first person view?

AF: As I said before, the main purpose of doing it that way is to make the player feel like a hero and not just watch his avatar. Of course a good adventure story needs a strong protagonist, so we have one in James Lee Quatermain. However, we see him only on the cutscenes.

One awesome thing that immediately stood out from the trailers was dual wielding! Tell us more about how that came about.

AF: It came to us quite naturally. We were looking for something which could emphasize the feeling of taking part in a crazy pulp adventure movie. One day someone from the team suggested: let’s add dual wielding! It isn’t realistic, but could give you lots of fun.

Recently, Square Enix released their Tomb Raider reboot to great success, making this style of game and genre even more crowded and competitive than it had been. To fans of either Tomb Raider or Uncharted, what would you say that would attract them to Deadfall Adventures?

AF: In our game, the player will have equipment that’s associated with an adventurer at their disposal, such as a compass; notepad and treasure maps. What’s more, environmental hazards will not only be obstacles for the player; they can use these to eliminate enemies in different and spectacular ways.

We think that the different perspective, lack of jumping, numerous amounts of puzzles, death defying traps and the adventurer’s equipment will create a relatively new and original experience.

"There will be some classic weapons from the WWII era, plus some prototypes and rare weapons. "

Please tell us a bit about the story and the characters in it. What kind of personality does the protagonist have?

RP: Our protagonist is James Lee Quatermain, the great-grandson of Allan Quatermain, who was a famous adventurer known from novels by Henry Rider Haggard. James is a rather simple guy with a good heart but also a kind of misanthrope. At the beginning he doesn’t even believe in supernatural things, although throughout the story this is affected in some way, which is also connected to the involvement of Allan Quatermain in the story.

What kind of weapons will be available in the game? Will you guys be offering skill points, weapon customization etc?

AF: We will have about 30 weapons in the game: pistols, automatic pistols, shotguns, assault rifles and rifles. There will be some classic weapons from the WWII era, plus some prototypes and rare weapons. We have carefully studied historical sources to find some exciting, good looking and after all interesting stuff.

There will be a treasure system, which will allow to upgrade stats of our hero and his weapons, like health, stamina, aiming spread, reload speed etc.

Painkiller was known for being gory and even over the top in its depiction of violence. Are you approaching Deadfall similarly, or will it be a bit more grounded in its depiction?

RP: What made Painkiller that violent was the gameplay approach of having to fight hordes of enemies. In Deadfall you never fight that many enemies at once and the general shooting gameplay is also a lot more slow compared to Painkiller which was really fast paced shooting. The depiction of violence in Painkiller was over the top while Deadfall Adventures is more realistic.

"We created the whole mythology based on popular legends, myths and beliefs. Then we added some hilarious dialogues, because in this kind of tale the humor is a must. "

For a game such as Deadfall Adventures, in-depth story and interesting characters are a must. Can you share how you guys are approaching the same in order to give the players a cliff hanger experience?

AF: We’ve worked very hard on the story from the very beginning of the project. We did thorough research; we watched all the movies that are important to the genre’s evolution (it was fun, I must admit), we even hired people from the movie industry to make sure that our story sticks to the convention.

We created the whole mythology based on popular legends, myths and beliefs. Then we added some hilarious dialogues, because in this kind of tale the humor is a must. Our story is rich but not too complicated. We mixed the fantastic elements with historical events such as the sea travels to the New World from the 16th century, organized by the King of Spain. Also as we mentioned, the hero is a great-grandson of a famous explorer, Allan Quatermain.

The enemies are Nazis! How did that decision come about? Considering just how prolific Nazis are in their video game appearances, was it a challenge to differentiate their role in Deadfall?

AF: The Nazis were very much interested in looking for ancient secrets, like for example the mythical land of Thule, one of the famous lost worlds. It corresponded well with our story.
Apart from that, Nazis as the bad guys are a common motive in the genre, so they just needed to be here. They aren’t the main villains in the story though.

RP: To my mind we mostly see Nazi soldier enemies in all these war shooters. In Deadfall Adventures it’s not a war but instead the Nazis are a party that is on the hunt for hidden artifacts and treasures.

"PC players can choose between mouse and keyboard or to play it with a controller. We will also have a lot of graphic options to fit the variety of system configurations and of course some options that are a matter of taste like FOV."

Deadfall looks good, and the game seems to promise cinematic gameplay. How do you plan on balancing cinematism with interactivity, since that is a point of contention so often these days?

AF: We don’t think about Deadfall Adventures as a mix of gameplay and cutscenes. We rather prefer to think about it as an experience of being a famous explorer.

RP: We know this is a crucial point; we feel that interactivity is of course great and the feel of a game is important in order to keep players excited. This is also to be said with cinematic events. I think The Walking Dead game showed that quite well because in essence I think the interactive parts don’t dominate in my opinion. We have a rather classic approach here and our main gameplay consists of interactive shooting, exploration and puzzle solving. If you have certain things accomplished there will be story sequences.

What kinds of research were done to provide the historical context of the game and make it seem believable? Obviously, it has to be hard to make these scenarios seem plausible for the player!

RP: We carefully researched on how the Nazis approach searching for treasures and artifacts and what was possible in the years the game is set in. We also researched the weapons and the equipment that is used by the characters in our game. But of course there are elements that are not accurate; with such myths like mummies or secret powers, but those are part of the lost world genre.

After all believability is key factor to bringing players an interesting experience.

So far the game is planned for an Xbox 360 and PC release… can we look forward to a PS3 version sometime soon?

RP: We will evaluate that once we have free resources. I don’t want to confirm or deny that it will come at any time to a PlayStation platform.

Are you guys beefing up the PC version with advanced graphics options? If yes, what can avid PC players expect?

RP: PC players can choose between mouse and keyboard or to play it with a controller. We will also have a lot of graphic options to fit the variety of system configurations and of course some options that are a matter of taste like FOV.

AF: As Reinhard said, PC owners will have at their disposal advanced graphics and control options. But apart from that we don’t want to make any version of the game better or different. It’s the experience which matters and this should be the same on PC and on Xbox 360.

What else can we look forward to from you in the future?

RP: We have a lot of interesting opportunities and there might be also some surprises about what projects we will announce in the future. We are also thinking a lot about how the market will change and how we can involve the communities more in our game productions.
