Some great examples of video game storytelling gone wrong.

Narrative has become increasingly important in games as time has gone on, but though the state of video game storytelling is stronger than it has ever been, some games still fumble with it every now and then. That hurts more than most with games that are otherwise excellent- games that, from a gameplay perspective, are among the very best their respective genres have to offer, but falter with their storytelling.

METAL GEAR SOLID 5

It’s heartbreaking that a Metal Gear Solid game has to be the one that kicks off a list about disappointing stories, but that’s just the way it is- The Phantom Pain is a masterclass in emergent, system-based gameplay, with stealth mechanics that stand as the very best even to this day. But it’s a game that sheds the story-heavy focus that the series was always known for. Cutscenes are few and far between, while some of the most important storytelling bits are relegated to optional cassette tapes and missable events- don’t even get us started on the ending.

Portability is an important consideration, at least for the Japanese market.

NIS appears to be one of the companies that is actually supporting the Nintendo Switch with meaningful content- Disgaea 5 Complete has been announced and confirmed for the Nintendo Switch launch. That is because especially in Japan, the prospect for a company like NISA of having an SKU of their software for portable platforms is hard to ignore.

“As you’ve said, we are a software company that has grown together with Playstation, and are well aware that a lot of our fans are on Playstation platforms,” NIS’s CEO said in an interview with Famitsu (translated by NeoGAF). “So it is not as if we will stop developing games for Playstation. Overseas, Playstation 4 sales are incredibly strong and we will continue making games for the Playstation 4 platform.

“However, in Japan we can’t just ignore the move to portable gaming consoles. Our games are well suited for portable gaming, so when you think about it, it is important for PS4 and Nintendo Switch to balance each other out and do well. With that in mind, from here on multiplatform development for PS4 and Nintendo Switch is very much a possibility.”

So it sounds like NIS will look into publishing its games on PS4 and Nintendo Switch going forward- the Switch seemingly replacing the Vita for their purposes. This goes back to something I had called a while back– it will be fascinating to see this phenomenon replicated across the entire Japanese industry in the months to come.

The fifth installment in NIS’s long running and cult classic strategic JRPG series, Disgaea 5, had already been announced for a Japanese release a while back; now, they have gone ahead and confirmed that the game will indeed be making its way over to the west as well, in Fall 2015, exclusively for the PlayStation 4.

Disgaea 5 features a new battle system called Alliance Attack, which opens up new special moves when characters’ relationships are appropriately aligned (so it sounds like something from Persona or Fire Emblem); meanwhile, there are over 40 races and jobs, a character stat-boosting systems based on revenge, and a trip to the Netherworld as well, so it should be a hefty experience for fans of the franchise.

With this, Final Fantasy Type 0, Final Fantasy XV, Ys, and of course, Persona 5, all slated for the PS4 some time next year, 2015 should prove to be a great year for JRPG fans who own Sony’s newest console.

New information pours in for NIS's latest title.

What did I just watch? I’m not sure, I don’t speak Japanese and “PS4” was the only portion of this trailer that was in English. Is this what the kids are into nowadays?

After a bit of digging around and trying to divergently translate the subtitles that YouTube uses, I was able to discern the following.

Nippon Ichi Software held their press conference today at TGS and let loose a torrent of information, such as the fact that Disgaea 5 will be releasing exclusively for the PlayStation 4. The story has been explained as being one of revenge with a greatly expanded scope based on fan feedback that previous narratives were to short.

Characters will have ultimate demon skills that players can activate when they’re in “revenge mode”, but that means exactly, I’m not certain. It’s a sort of statistical buff that improves your characters stats whilst in battle. Nippon Ichi Software haven’t announced that the game will be launching outside of Japan just yet, but a quick poke about reveals that all the other main line entries into the series have made the jump. So perhaps you may just get you Disgaea fix! If that’s your thing of course.

And that means ONLY for PS4. No PS3, PS Vita, 3DS, Xbox, or Wii U versions.

One of the many announcements that Sony made during their pre-TGS conference earlier this week to appeal to the Japanese market- seriously, the console has been selling like shit over in Japan, being routinely outsold not just by the country’s champion, the 3DS, but also the Wii U and the PS Vita- was Disgaea 5, the newest entry in the role playing game series by NIS.

Disgaea is, for reference, a strategy role playing game series that has mostly been exclusive to the PlayStation throughout the entirety of its existence, and that is not something that is changing with the new entry, which will also be PlayStation exclusive. However, unlike every other major PlayStation 4 announcement at Sony’s conference, which also had a version on PlayStation 3 and/or Vita, Disgaea 5 is coming only to PlayStation 4. So that’s a nice symbolic victory if nothing else, mostly because Disgaea is highly niche, even in Japan.

Disgaea 5 has no announced release date, but we’ll keep you posted.

Sohei Niikawa the CEO of Nippon Ichi Software has confirmed to Dengeki Online that Disgaea 5 is in the making and is currently in the pre-production stage.

The team is getting ready to reach development stage quite soon, since the pre-production is almost done. Sohei Niikawa also said that he wishes to make Disgaea 5 better than the original Disgaea for the fans, and surpass everyone’s expectations.

Tactical RPG fans may now rejoice after hearing that Disgaea 5 is officially in development. The platforms are still unknown and were not sure if the game will be a cross-gen title, PlayStation Vita, or only available for PlayStation 3 or the upcoming PlayStation 4.

Let us know if you’re excited for the next entry in the Disgaea series, in the comments section down below.

Nipoon Ichi Software recently announced during the Anime Expo 2012 in Los Angeles that they were working on the next Disgaea title. NIS president Souhei Niikawa, during a Q&A session, didn’t say or offer much else about the title other than it’s existence.

The last title in franchise was Disgaea 4: A Promise Forgotten. Ignoring the various spin-offs, one can thus deduce that this will be the fifth title in the series.

NIS has been known for it’s turn-based strategy RPGs, but Disgaea put them on the map. It also successfully turned TBS RPGs on their head as well, as it encouraged players to rule-break, cheat and simply think outside the box to win.

The story and graphics have never been beyond the usual 2D sprites set against 3D environments, but when you can travel inside your sword to levy rewards for your sins as a demon, it doesn’t matter.

Disgaea 5 will probably see a release by late 2012/early 2013, but we’ll keep you updated as more details emerge.
