Matt Walker says the game's director has moved on from DMC5.

The week has seen some great news for Capcom’s action series revival, Devil May Cry 5, with the game performing strongly according to Capcom’s financials. It also comes with some bittersweet news though, as once again Producer Matt Walker reiterates that there’s no more planned post-release DLC for the title, something he’s said before. Another thing that may raise some eyebrows is that he says Capcom is open to revisiting the attempted reboot title, DmC: Devil May Cry.

In an interview with FEED4GAMERS, Walker talked about how DMC5 director, Hideaki Itsuno, has moved on to another project with his core team (possibly Dragon’s Dogma 2?), again squashing hopes of more content coming soon. He also briefly spoke about the polarizing reboot attempt, and said that if they could get Ninja Theory involved, they were open to revisiting that world.

“As you mentioned, on the dev side we certainly wanted to and thought we would work with Ninja Theory again to create a sequel to DmC, but that unfortunately didn’t get off the ground,” he said. “We’d still love to see a sequel, but we think it absolutely has to be made by Ninja Theory – so much of the amazing style and substance in that game was only possible because they have such a knack for what’s cool. It wouldn’t be DmC without Ninja Theory.”

If you’re not aware, after the release of Devil May Cry 4, Capcom decided to reboot the series in a more western style with developer Ninja Theory at the helm in 2013. The reboot was titled DmC: Devil May Cry. The move was highly controversial to fans, largely because it would leave several unanswered questions from DMC4, and the reboot drastically altered the look, tone, and style the series was known for.

It didn’t help that the director of the title and online fans got into a war of words on several occasions. Though the title has gone on to sell mostly in line with the franchise as a whole, it failed to garner a new, larger audience as hoped, and remains a heavily polarizing subject among the fanbase, prompting a return to the series previous canon with the recent Devil May Cry 5. With Ninja Theory now being owned by Microsoft, it’s doubtful the alliance will happen again, but stranger things have happened.

Devil May Cry 5 is available now for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. An enhanced version of DmC: Devil May Cry called the Definitive Edition is also available now for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

"Itsuno-san himself has explicitly stated that in his mind, DmC is just as important as any of the other titles in the series, and he’s just as proud of it."

While Devil May Cry 5 will continue the story of Devil May Cry 4 from eleven years ago when it finally launches next year, there was another Devil May Cry game that we got in the interim: DmC: Devil May Cry, a reboot of the action game franchise led by Ninja Theory. Owing to the game’s controversial aesthetics (mostly), it turned out to be a hugely divisive game, dividing series fans on its quality and merits.

With Devil May Cry 5 seemingly going straight to the original storyline, many would assume that DmC has been quietly forgotten and swept under the rug by Capcom, right? Well, not really. Matt Walker, producer at Capcom, emphasized to VG247 that Capcom remains proud of what DmC did, and that they will be taking what they learned from it and applying it to Devil May Cry 5.

“This is definitely a game for the fans – we’ve heard fans asking for a sequel to the storyline of DMC4 for over ten years. But this isn’t a slight at Ninja Theory or DmC at all. We all love DmC,” Walker said. “[Devil May Cry series producer Hideaki] Itsuno-san himself has explicitly stated that in his mind, DmC is just as important as any of the other titles in the series, and he’s just as proud of it. That game had an amazing world all its own, that could only have been produced by the amazing artists and imaginations at Ninja Theory.

“We learned a lot from working with Ninja Theory on that title, and we hope that they benefited in some way as well. Itsuno-san has stressed several times in conversations with me that he’s taken what he’s learned from working on DmC and applied what he’s learned specifically to what we’ve done on DMC5.”

Honestly, I am glad about this. DmC had its own share of issues, but it was a great game that wasn’t given a fair chance by many people. While, for now, it seems like the door has been closed on that story, I hope its spirit and successes live on in whatever direction Capcom chooses to take the series into in the future. Devil May Cry 5 launches next year for Xbox One, PS4, and PC.

Milestone Interactive’s Game4u.com is currently holding its March Madness sale, which began on March 28th and will wrap up on April 7th.

Partnering with Zotac, Game4U is offering a 20 to 30 percent discount on digital titles which include Battlefield 4, Saints Row IV, Crysis Warhead, DmC: Devil May Cry, FIFA 14, etc. Those who manage to earn the top spender spot will be able to win a Zotac Zbox ID90 worth Rs. 50,000 along with 2 Zotac jerseys.

As for the games in question, Saints Row IV and DmC: Devil May Cry are good deals having been critically acclaimed. Saints Row IV in particular is one of the best open world games of last year and just a blast to play in general. Crysis Warhead is far beyond showing its age though and you should opt for FIFA 14 only if you really like the franchise and need your football fix.

Let us know what you think of the above deals in the comments below.

The DmC: Devil May Cry developer is pushing ahead.

Despite DmC: Devil May Cry seemingly failing to meet sales targets for Capcom, developer Ninja Theory is still pushing forward. According to new job listings on its official site, it seems that the studio has multiple projects in development for consoles.

“Ninja Theory, the makers of Heavenly Sword, Enslaved: Odyssey to the West and DmC are looking for experienced engine programmers to join our expanding team. We’ve got some exciting new console projects coming up so if you have relevant console or PC industry experience then we want to hear from you!”

It only makes sense that the company would be preparing for next-gen consoles, though it remains to be seen exactly what it will be working on next. Past rumours suggest that Capcom has hired the developer to work on the next Onimusha game but thus far, we haven’t had announcements. Stay tuned for more details heading into the new year.

Capcom has revealed its financials for the full fiscal year ending on March 31st 2013, and it’s far from pretty. Although revenue rose year-on-year from ¥82 billion ($820 million) to ¥94 billion ($940 million), the Digital Contents business saw a 50 percent drop in profits at $31 million, and given that it accounts for 67.7 percent of Capcom’s total income, that’s bad news indeed.

The financials also revealed sales figures and projected targets for several top games: DmC: Devil May Cry sold 1.15 million worldwide, with an expected 2 million unit target; Resident Evil 6 hit 4.9 million units sold but with a target of 7 million units; and Dragon’s Dogma sold 1.3 million units (with no target, which means it was a surprise that it did so well). Resident Evil: Revelations has a 1.2 million units goal, which it will apparently reach, but Lost Planet 3, requiring 1.2 million units in sales, isn’t faring well.

In a statement, Capcom COO Haruhiro Tsujimoto talked about the plans to offer more DLC. “I regret to say that, up to now, we had few plans for the full-scale implementation of DLC. From here on out, we need to focus on the long-term provision of content starting at the earliest stages of development.

“Furthermore, in terms of user response, if the additional related content we are providing continually to users online is deemed uninteresting from the start, there will be no ongoing business to pursue. This means that, more than ever before, the creation of underlying content is the key to success.”

Don’t you just love it when developers can’t give you a hint or a tiny morsel of information as to what they’re working on? The latest studio to join this trend is Ninja Theory, who recently tweeted: “Looking forward to showing you something new from us soon”.

The developer who debuted with Heavenly Sword before striking out on their own to bring us the multi-platform Enslaved: Odyssey to the West are perhaps best known for DmC: Devil May Cry.

Capcom licensed the franchise to Ninja Theory to reboot it and effectively reshape its protagonist Dante. Naturally, the design caught on fire but not in the good way, drawing criticism from all sides and even of all things a petition to the White House to have it changed back.

It will be interesting to see what Ninja Theory is working on these days. Rumours have been running that they’ve been commissioned to work on the next Onimusha for Capcom. Stay tuned for more details in the coming weeks.

Learn Vergil's fate in the upcoming DLC.

For those who are still annoyed about DmC: Devil May Cry – you know, despite the positive reviews and impressions and sales – well, go somewhere else. But for those who liked the game and are interested to learn about what happens to Vergil, the upcoming DLC pack Vergil’s Downfall just might be worth a look.

As the name suggests, you’ll be playing as Vergil. And while Dante had an entirely new system to rely on, Vergil’s moves are more or less what we’ve come to expect from the series from projectiles to teleporting and infamous quick strikes of the Yamato.

To top it off, Ninja Theory has provided a new set of enemies and bosses to wallop and mercilessly slay, just for this release.

Vergil’s Downfall is currently slated to arrive on the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of DmC: Devil May Cry for 720 Microsoft Points on Xbox Live and $7.99 on Playstation Network.

Publishers expects to ship 800k less units than what was originally predicted.

Capcom’s Ninja Theory developed reboot of the Devil May Cry series, DmC just came out a few days back, and while it received general acclaim from several media outlets, including us, its sales have been falling behind expectations.

While DmC debuted on the UK Charts right on top, it actually sold sell than the 2008 title Devil May Cry 4 did in its launch week, despite having three extra days on the market.

It didn’t do very well in Japan either, selling half as much as Devil May Cry 4 did in its launch week in the region.

As a result of all this, Capcom has reduced its targets for DmC considerably. While the publisher originally intended to have shipped 2 million units of DmC by the end of the fiscal year, the expected figures have been brough down drastically to 1.2 million. This is after the fact that 1 million units have already been shipped, meaning that sales are obviously slow.

Of course, the PC sales figures are not being counted by Capcom right now, but surely this spells trouble for the series. Capcom did say it doesn’t want the franchise to die, but it remains to be seen just what they will do if the Ninja Theory developed reboot isn’t as successful as they wanted it to be.

Is this Devil May Cry game worthy of its predecessors' legacy?

DDevil May Cry has been released on the PC just about a week after the release on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Handled on Steam for the PC, Devil May Cry was developed by Ninja Theory across all platforms. The game is a reboot to the popular Devil May Cry series.

Although early reports were that Devil May Cry was going to run on DirectX 11, in my testing on a few machines, I found that the game only runs at DirectX 9. I’ve also found a site with the same numbers.

Although Devil May Cry could have certainly benefited from DirectX 11, with the art style and game play, there’s a possibility you might not notice. The art team did a fantastic job with tricking out the Unreal Engine, and truthfully, it’s one of the nicest examples of how strong the Unreal Engine can be when used by some skilled artists.

I can’t just single out the artists though, there must have been some mad hours spent on coding in the hallways that stretch. You can be running down a corridor that’s only one hundred feet long, and then it breaks and stretches to three to four hundred feet. It can really warp your sense of depth and it’s a great feature.

The only major difference between the consoles and the PC are the controls. With the PC you have the option to play with the keyboard and mouse instead of the controller. I played half the game with the keyboard and mouse setup until I got through a major boss battle. Up until then it all seemed manageable. As the game progressed and more combos were added to the game play it became harder to manage all the keyboard buttons. The key was to taking your time, but when it came to the boss battle where you had to jump over objects and then ground pound triggers that’s when the keyboard and mouse set up just fell apart for me.

Thankfully the PC version does not have an issue with switching from the keyboard and mouse to a game controller. I would recommend playing this game only with a controller since it had become increasingly harder to hit the right combo buttons at triggered events or situations where you need to grapple to one spot and then glide in the air. On the keyboard you are looking at using four or five buttons with well precise timing. On the game controller it took 2.

Although there are options in the graphic settings to turn graphics to ultra, or turn shadows on, if you play the game at low setting, it still holds up very well. On the last two battles I had a performance hit and had to switch my settings down to make game play manageable.

There truthfully aren’t any bonus options to the PC version that the console doesn’t already have. There’s no multiplayer online play and although the consoles can handle online games as well, Steam does a better job. However since there’s no online play it’s more of a moot point.

Overall with the difference between the PC and console version of Devil May Cry being minute I would refer you back to the previous review, here on GamingBolt, created for the console if you want to know about game play and story, as I agree with the the review.

This game was reviewed on the PC.
