You are what lies in the shadows.

It’s 1918, London. You are Dr. Jonathan Reid, a newly turned vampire. You are looking for a cure but at the same time the “disease” needs you to kill for strength. You can hear the heartbeats, you can taste their blood. Dontnod have been in development of their cryptically dark game Vampyr for quite some time. With this eerily dark, evil in the shadows action-suspense game, there’s always something lurking around the next corner.

With such an interesting concept and a large world to explore all of its nooks, we had a talk with Lead Designer Florent Guillaume to ask him what’s lying within the shadows of London.

Extensive work has been done to capture London during 1918 in Vampyr. What are some of the memorable times you had during development?

There are key moments in production. I think the first memorable moment is you get the dialogue in the game, especially in our game. We spent a lot of time designing them, writing what they are. I think when you see that in the game, when you can talk to them – and in the end when you get to and you get to the real voices and the real actors, it’s a blast to see what you’ve been working on for so long. To see it coming to life. I think with Vampyr it’s very focused on the citizens. I would say that that’s my moment.

What can you tell us about the art style and aesthetic? We know that Phil Hale’s paintings influenced the atmosphere but how much work went into capturing them?

It’s not really my field because I’m more into the game design. But I know our art director is influenced by a lot of different artists. We really strive to find a unique atmosphere in game. We didn’t want to have a realistic rendering art direction. We tried to recapture the dark atmosphere, and to give life to the environments.

Given its genre, what can you tell us about the scale of Vampyr‘s world?

We tend to say we have a semi-open world, which in fact is an open world. You can navigate freely in the world and discover secrets. But we really worked hard to find the right skill for the game. We wanted to have a very human-focused world where the game is centered around these characters. Especially your character. We did not want it to be too large, and we didn’t wanted to be too small as well. We have four districts in the game. You can access these districts seamlessly. We try to find the right balance between them. We wanted the player to be able to explore, and always find new things in the world, new quests, new citizens, new secrets; the world is filled with secrets. We really wanted it to feel consistent.

"Throughout the course of the game you can become friends with new factions, you can control them based on your actions. So your relationship can evolve in Vampyr."

What kinds of activities and side missions can players partake in? Given that this is Dontnod’s first action-esque title since Remember Me, what lessons were learned for the overall mission design?

There are a lot of activities in the game. Some missions will be more action oriented, you will have more enemies to fight. There are some bosses in the game, there are mini bosses that you have to confront and destroy. The player will have a lot of social activities to do, because he will meet a lot of characters. Some characters are critical and some are not and you will have to find information with them; to talk to them, to spy on them, because you have some powers as well that allows you to control the citizens. We also have a lot of exploration in the game. From Remember Me, we have heard from fans that it was too linear. But that was not the main reason why Vampyr is an open world. We did not do an open world just because the previous title was more linear. But doing an open world we found that it was the best structure for the game, to support our key element which are the citizens. We didn’t think as we were playing an RPG, we were playing a game where the character can go wherever he wants.

How many characters are in the game? Are there any memorable NPCs that will remind us of, say, Max and Chloe from Life is Strange?

I can’t give you a number on the citizens yet. We have a lot of citizens, we have four districts. We have a lot of different citizens and they all have a reason to be in the game. The game is taking place by night, so in that time during 1918 the world was not really peaceful. World War I that just ended. The Spanish flu that spread throughout the city. So people are leaving there and going out by night. So in order to emphasis that we developed really colorful characters and memorable characters.

Players will come across several different kinds of factions in-game. While they seem like enemies, are there certain factions you can befriend and work with?

Yes. I won’t be able to expand much on that subject because you will discover all of that in the story of the game. So I don’t want to spoil it for you. You’re facing mostly one faction. They are vampire hunters, and they are about the only people who know about vampires in the game. We also have other factions who study vampires, and they document what they find. There are enemy factions and friendly factions. Throughout the course of the game you can become friends with new factions, you can control them based on your actions. So your relationship can evolve in Vampyr.

"We don’t have random loot in the game. We are not a game like MMOs where you’ll have to replay, and replay, and replay to maybe, at some point get some random loot that will work. "

How has the combat been refined since Vampyr was first unveiled?

The combat system has gone through a lot of iterations. We have the melee combat system that is supported by middle ranged guns, and the vampire abilities and skills that you have. We really worked throughout the course of the game, really refining the systems, because we really knew since the beginning that these abilities will be good for experience. We really worked between the balance [abilities and weapons]. We worked on the animations.

Can you tell us whether the game will have any customization?

You won’t be able to customize your character.

What kind of weapons are in Vampyr?

There are a lot of weapons. You have a great variety of melee weapons. You have left handed and right handed handed weapons which you can combine. You also have ranged weapons, small fire arms and crossbows.

Can players put together certain builds to fit their play styles in combat? Furthermore, what is the loot aspect of the game like?

We believe we have a unique take on the RPG evolution. Usually RPG’s tend to give you classes, to orient you to some sort of specification. We really didn’t want that for the game. The player is free to evolve at his own pace. To evolve you need to take lives, you need to embrace people. You don’t need to kill anybody, you can play the game without killing anybody; or you can play the game with killing everybody. So this plan of evolution can really vary in the game. With the decision the player takes, with the amount of blood you acquire, you will be able to evolve and gain vampire abilities.

We have a lot of them that you can acquire. We have three branches of abilities: shadow abilities, which allows you to blend in with the shadows. We have the instinct abilities, that are more beastly. We also have social abilities were vampires can turn into their targets. We have a broad range of abilities you can have.

We don’t have random loot in the game. We are not a game like MMOs where you’ll have to replay, and replay, and replay to maybe, at some point get some random loot that will work. The world is filled with content, with a lot of things to loot. We filled it with weapons, we have a crafting system that you can use to craft medicine, to craft new gear. Each area has specific challenges to access equipment.

Will the game feature Xbox One X or PS4 Pro specific enhancements? What can players expect if they are playing the game on Xbox One X? Is 4K/60fps on the cards?

I can’t talk about that yet. We will communicate about that in the summer.

From a development perspective, how do you find the Xbox One X to be? With so much GPU power, we are sure you must be doing some amazing things.

As a designer I don’t know yet. We are not programming in the engine so to see the differences between the consoles, as a designer I really have no idea.

Is the game running at 1080p and 30fps on both the base PS4 and Xbox One?

The frame rate will be at 30 FPS, but I don’t know about the resolution.

Do you have any plans to bring the game to the Switch? If not can you tell us why? Is it due to its weak processing power?

That I don’t know as well. Sorry.

'It had flaws, but it was misunderstood.'

Last year, Dotnod Entertainment released an action game called Remember Me exclusively for the PlayStation 3. Whereas that in itself is enough to generate hype for any game, no matter how deserving or undeserving of that it may be, Remember Me also got hype for one other reason- it had a female lead. Add to this certain remarks about the state of the industry, and its lack of acceptance of female leads in video games that don’t fall under the traditional sexualized male fantasy niches (or aren’t called Samus), and the game got a lot of attention for that fact.

And then it released. And fell flat on its face, the fall being harder because of all of the bravado the developer had exhibited in the run up to the title’s launch.

However, now, speaking to Joystiq, Creative Director Jean Maxime Moris said that while the game might have had flaws, it was also misunderstood by its audience.

“We’re extremely proud of Remember Me,” he said. “I think it was not perfect by any means, but to some level it was misunderstood. It was our first game. We got totally buried under the hype for a very big game that came out directly after]. These are not excuses because it was not perfect, it had flaws.”

Credit where credit is due, he recognizes the flaws in his product, and yes, he continues to stick by it, like any artist should. I would have expected him to use the occasion to raise a ruckus about how games with female leads aren’t accepted, and that’s what caused it to bomb, but at the very least, he recognizes the game had a fair few number of other failings.

This makes me more likely to check out their future products. One of which, co-incidentally enough, was just announced last week. it’s called Life Is Strange, and it will be published by Square Enix. Stay tuned to GamingBolt for more information.

Remember Me is a single player action game. It is published by Capcom and developed by Dotnod Entertainment.

Remember Me is set in the year 2084 and feature Nilin, a memory hunter and remixer specialist. Players will be able to use biotic powers and chain combo while they make across some of the most exotic locations seen in a video game. Remember Me is a new IP and hopefully we will be able to see a sequel on next generation consoles.

Dontnod’s sci-fi game is a compelling experience.

Given how the market is inauspicious to new AAA video game franchises these days, it’s simply intriguing that Capcom and Dontnod Entertainment went through with Remember Me. Not many publishers would have approved an unknown IP and that too so close to the end of a console cycle. One must simply applaud Capcom for taking the risk because Remember Me is a fantastic enactment.

The player takes up the role of Nilin who has the ability to hunt for other people’s memories and shape them as she sees fit. At the beginning of the game, Nilin finds herself trapped in MEMORIZE, an organization that specializes in storing people’s memory using a technology called as SENSEN. However she makes her way out with some help from Edge, the leader of a rebel group called as the “Errorists”. While it’s an intriguing enough start, the plot loses steam as the player progresses through the fairly long single player campaign. As such the story is present for name’s sake only and provides little motivation for the player to learn more about the characters involved in the game.

One of the first things the player will notice about Remember Me is how opulent it looks. The game is set in Neo Paris in the year 2084 and certain locations like the Eiffel Tower have been accurately captured. Although you can only view them from a distance, it still adds to the overall experience and many times I found myself simply standing and admiring the outright beauty of the game (especially on the PC with maximum settings enabled).

Remember Me is running on Unreal Engine 3 and unlike other titles, it makes paramount strides in the visual department. In a city such Paris, the present state serving as an aesthetic template for the future, things need to look sublime and otherworldly. The proper combination of red, yellow and blue colors along with the help of high-dynamic-range lighting truly brings the game alive, and we wouldn’t be surprised if Vincent Van Gogh’s Starry Night served as an artistic inspiration for the game’s visual design. Real time local reflections and highly detailed character models go a long way in immersing the player. Honestly, Remember Me by far is one of the best looking games I have played this generation.

As mentioned above, Nilin is a memory hunter she can manipulate a person’s mind to her advantage. The player can enter the mind of an individual and during that particular stage, interact with nearby objects to change the outcome. The player can also reverse or forward the entire piece of memory and try out different combinations of the objects to achieve the desired results. The concept is unique and the execution is near perfect. Dontnod have ensured that there aren’t too many memory remixing sequences so that the game doesn’t get bogged down.

Players can also steal memories from specific targets and kick off Remembranes which allows Nilin to see memories in real time. This feature is mostly used to get across hazardous locations or to synchronize the correct button combination. Some of the Remembranes require the player to understand the clues behind the memories. For example, a door can only be unlocked if the player is able to crack a clue given by a memorized soldier. Instances like this ensure that the Remembranes aren’t just filler but a befitting component of the gameplay experience.

Nilin can also perform special moves via the S-Pressen wheel. The Logic Bomb will deal damage to all enemies in the surrounding area and is ideal for breaking through shields. D.O.S. temporarily stuns all enemies giving the player enough time to land some hard-hitting blows. Nilin can also turn invisible using the Camo and turn enemy robots in to allies using the Rest in Pieces power. Once you use an ability, it will go in to cool down mode, indicated by a timer, before you can use it again.

The game also includes a skill system in the form of Pressens. However the developers have gone for a different approach as to how the player will acquire them. The Pressens are tied in with combos and as you defeat a set number of enemies you will continue to unlock them. There are four different types of Pressens in the game. For example, the Power and Regen Pressens will deal extra damage and help regain some of your health respectively.

On the other hand Cooldown Pressen will shave off the cool down time for special powers. Chain Pressen will duplicate the previous Pressen’s effect in the combo chain. Using the Pressens above, you can then make your own hand to hand combinations. This is crucial especially in the case of a boss fight where there is a need for a quick cool down for your special powers.

Even though the combat sounds solid, it gets repetitive way too fast. At many points during the gameplay I felt the need to rearrange my combos simply because they were becoming pretty bland. It’s a shame that the combat feature had so much potential but instead ends up feeling like an add-on rather than a substantive part of the experience.

Having said that, Remember Me is a solid game which is backed up by exotic presentation and imploring set pieces. The platforming sections are also fun and memory mixing and manipulation is compelling. Truly worth a short vacation to Neo Paris, even if you won’t inspired enough to prolong your stay.

No blood in the game.

If you are bored of first-person shooters, violent games then Remember Me is something that is up your alley, revealed Dotnod Entertainment.

“Video games have become such a formatted medium, but it’s the most powerful medium in the world and it has the most potential in the future. Yet everything is formatted,” creative director Jean-Maxime Moris said to CVG.

“How fucking stupid is this industry to only bet on those stereotypes? It’s the only thing you give people, they get accustomed to it and don’t want anything else.

“So yes, our character, Nilin, is mixed race, she is female, her sexual orientation is her private life, so I won’t go there.”

The game does not have a lot of violence but still offers some good action.

“She runs around, climbs, leaps, kicks guys’ asses, remixes their memories, only kills a few people – and does it all in a game with no blood.

“We made those choices to say: ‘look you can have something that’s kick ass, something that’s powerful, and you don’t need it to be ultraviolent’.”
