Rockfish Games’ brilliant rogue-lite space shooter Everspace has received an official release date for the Nintendo Switch. It will be out on December 11th as Everspace: Stellar Edition and will include the base title and the Encounters expansion. In addition to this, consumers will also receive an Everspace art book and the original soundtrack (which has +60 tracks).

The game and its expansion are also available for Xbox One, PS4, and PC. If you haven’t played it, the focus is on exploring the universe and upgrading your ship along the way. Random encounters, unique quests, different factions, and more will be available to experience.

Though you start from the beginning upon death, there is still long-term progression, with upgrades to go along with it. Players will have several ships to choose from, and can even decide what weapons and gear to start with. The Encounters expansion offers even more with the Okkar homeworld, new weapons like the flamethrower, and new quests to undertake.

Though not as hyped as E3 2018, there was tons of great reveals from this year's Gamescom.

Gamescom 2018 started on August 21st and should be more or less finished by now. While generally not as hyped as the Electronic Entertainment Expo, this year’s Gamescom saw a number of awesome reveals and announcements. Except for whatever happened to Blizzard when it threw out the schedule for its first day but I digress. Let’s take a closer look at 20 of the biggest announcements from the trade fair.

PUBG 1.0 Dated for Xbox One

Amid its various issues and Bluehole’s desire to fix things, the developer announced that PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds would be launching version 1.0 on Xbox One on September 4th. Not only that but the new Sanhok map, custom games and War Mode would also be included with the update. Though PUBG on the Xbox One had a shoddy start and – depending on who you ask – isn’t the best Battle Royale title available, it still has a very, very healthy player base. And they’ve got a whole lot to look forward to.

Devil May Cry 5 Release Date and Gameplay

Arguably the star of Gamescom 2018, Devil May Cry 5 astounded all who played it on the show floor. Along with faster movement, mid-air dodging and a whole variety of combat options, the sequel re-established the Devil May Cry flavour that we knew and loved. Not only that but Capcom announced a release date of March 8th 2019. Footage for Dante, more details on the mysterious third character “V” and much more are in store but for all intents and purposes, we’re kind of thinking Devil May Cry is back.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice Out in March 2019

Perhaps the second most hyped game at the trade fair, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice was also playable. Activision took to announcing a release date of March 22nd 2019 and a Collector’s Edition, complete with a statue of the protagonist. However, it was the gameplay that honestly excited us. Sekiro doesn’t have a stamina meter, boasts impressive movement thanks to a grappling hook and channels a contemporary Tenchu more than you’d think. Despite this, combat is intense, relying on threshold meters that increase with damage taken, leading up to execution-style attacks. It’s bloody, grim and has that From Software vibe to it. Suffice to say, that’s good news.

The Surge 2’s First Look at Combat

If you happened upon that leaked gameplay clip for The Surge 2 a while ago, then nothing in the current trailer really surprised you. For everyone else, it was the first look at a game that’s still relatively Souls-like. The previous game’s special limb-targeting system is looking good, the movement seems more fluid and overall, the world feels more realized. That may not seem like a big deal but those cloaked Hunters and transforming statue gave us hope for what’s to come.

Ori and the Will of the Wisps – Spirit Trials

Did Microsoft announce a release date for Ori and the Will of the Wisps? No. It did the next best thing though with the reveal of Spirit Trials. This is essentially time trials as players attempt to beat their friends’ best times. Competing against them will be “ghosts” of said friends, amping up the competitiveness even more. Perform well enough and you’ll unlock some rewards. This already sounds like an awesome way to cater to the speed-running and hardcore fan base, having them come back for more after the main story is finished. Now let’s hope a release date shows up sooner than later.

Halo: The Master Chief Collection Coming to Xbox Game Pass

It’s hard to forget just how much of a disaster Halo: The Master Chief Collection was at launch. However, 343 Industries has been working to improve it and all that effort comes to fruition when the game launches for Xbox Game Pass on September 1st. Along with Xbox One X support (including 4K and HDR), it will bring a large patch that improves matchmaking times, lets players pick and choose which games they want, or whether to forgo multiplayer entirely for the single-player experience.

Desperados 3 Announced by THQ Nordic

This has been a long time coming, especially following the lacklustre Desperados 2: Cooper’s Revenge. THQ Nordic unveiled Desperados 3 and pretty much confirmed that it would be the same isometric, real-time tactics, Wild West title that the very first game did so well. Nothing else was revealed beyond that but it’s out in 2019 so there’s still time to learn more.

Supermassive Announces The Dark Pictures Anthology

In an interesting twist, Bandai Namco – who’s been on fire with the partnerships this year – will be working to bring Supermassive’s next horror anthology to all platforms. The first title in The Dark Pictures Anthology is Man of Medan, a story about tourists who mess with some underwater relics and have to deal with a haunted ship. The textures and animation are pretty great and it’ll be out in 2019.

Overwatch’s Shooting Star and New Control Map

A new animated short is always a special occasion for Blizzard’s Overwatch. While “Shooting Star” didn’t do much to advance the main plot, it did give some backstory into Hana “D.Va” Song. The production quality and presentation were stellar as always but it perhaps pales in comparison to Busan, the new Control map. Available now on PTR, it offers new environmental hazards and interesting geometry while still maintaining the Control essentials. Expect to see it sometime in the coming month or two on live servers.

Life is Strange 2 First Gameplay

Life is Strange 2 finally revealed its premise and gameplay aspects, telling the story of Sean and Daniel Diaz who are on the run after an incident. Magic powers are once again at play but thanks to the age difference of the brothers, the decisions of Sean will have an influence on Daniel. Episode 1 arrives on September 27th for Xbox One, PS4 and PC but early gameplay shows that the Life is Strange aesthetic is more or less intact. Let’s hope the story-telling is up to par as well (or ideally better).

Cyberpunk 2077 Screenshots Tease FPS Gameplay

CD Projekt RED sadly didn’t showcase its behind-closed-doors E3 2018 demo. However, it did release some screenshots that gave us a better idea of what the first person perspective would look like. Furthermore, it announced that a major development milestone was reached with the game being playable from start to finish. Bug testing and other optimization still remain to be done but we could be seeing the game sooner than expected.

Dark Souls Trilogy Announced for US

Remember that Dark Souls collection that was only released for Japan on PS4 earlier this year? Bandai Namco announced that both Xbox One and PS4 players in the United States and Asia could pick up the Dark Souls Trilogy on October 19th (sorry Europe). So you get Dark Souls Remastered, Dark Souls 2: Scholar of the First Sin and Dark Souls 3: The Fire Fades Edition, all for $80. On the one hand, it’s kind of lame for those who recently bought Dark Souls Remastered. On the other hand, if you never played Dark Souls, this is the best way to get into it with all the DLC included.

Metro Exodus Continues Looking Gorgeous in New Trailer

What’s more terrifying than a post-apocalyptic, bombed out Moscow crawling with monsters? Heading out into the great unknown. Because for all the beautiful sights out there in Metro Exodus, from lush green valleys to calm wildlife, there are some nasty things lurking in the dark. Other human factions that nail bodies to walls for fun, wolves, giant bears – you name it and it’s probably trying to kill you. Still, Metro Exodus looks great and we’re looking forward to its upcoming February 2019 release all the more.

Battlefield 5 Open Beta Dates Announced

For all the criticism that Battlefield 5 has received over its customization and depiction of World War 2, it does look insanely good. DICE teamed up with Nvidia to showcase the first person shooter on the upcoming GeForce RTX, which was quite the visual feast. However, it also unveiled the open beta for September, bringing the new Rotterdam map to Conquest. It’s available for Origin Access Basic/Premier and EA Access subscribers on September 4th but everyone else can jump in on September 6th.

This War of Mine, Windjammers 2 and More Heading to Switch

Nintendo isn’t running out of indies for its Switch platform any time soon. At the start of Gamescom, it unveiled numerous titles like 11 bit Studios’ Children of Morta, This War of Mine and Beat Cop for the platform. Moonlighter also received a more solid release window, which was great, but that wasn’t all. Slay the Spire, Night Call, Monster Boy and The Cursed Kingdom, Everspace, The Gardens Between, Bad North and so much more looked great. Oh, and did we mention Windjammers 2? Because Windjammers 2 is FINALLY happening. Sure, many of these are already available or coming to other platforms but having them on the go is just fantastic.

Soulcalibur 6’s Libra of Soul and Tira Revealed

Not content with a traditional single-player campaign, Project Soul announced another story mode for Soulcalibur 6. Libra of Soul does have its differences though as players will create a custom fighter and engage with other player-created fighters and main roster heroes. Each of these encounters will have different rule sets to mix up the battles further. The customization system harkens back to Tekken 7 in many ways so hopefully, the voice-acting for Libra of Soul is on point. Oh and Tira is back but as a DLC character. So that’s a thing to either get excited or upset about.

Shenmue 3 Releasing on August 2019

Ys Net’s Shenmue 3 will be releasing on August 27th 2019. Now, all jokes aside about another possible delay, the sequel is actually looking pretty good. The animation is mostly on point, textures look nice and sharp, and even the story is very well presented. I mean, who didn’t mark out when Lan Di was shown after so long? Honestly, the biggest compliment I can give the latest trailer is that it evokes the same feelings that the original Shenmue’s reveal did in the Dreamcast era. Take that for what you will.

THQ Nordic Bringing Microsoft Titles to Steam

Xbox One/Windows 10 titles that have been relegated to the Microsoft Store are finally coming to Steam and physical retail. THQ Nordic announced a deal with Microsoft for the same and will release games like ReCore, Super Lucky’s Tale and Zoo Tycoon: Ultimate Animal Collection. All these titles will arrive on September 14th. It may not seem like that big of a deal compared to other announcements but could lead to other Windows 10 exclusives arriving on Steam. No, not Gears 5 or Halo Infinite but some other stuff, probably.

Ace Combat 7 Arrives in January 2019

Bandai Namco had announced that Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown will be released on January 18th 2019 for Xbox One and PS4. Even better, PC players can get their hands on it in February 2019. The newly unveiled trailer was full of intrigue, political dealings, high-flying action and…more political dealings. Regardless, the game looks gorgeous and a worthy follow-up even if some of the English voice-acting is…different, to say the least.

New Settlers Game Announced

Champions of Anteria? Get out of here with that nonsense because The Settlers are back. Not only is Ubisoft re-releasing all of its old Settlers titles on November 15th but it has a new game in development. Releasing in Autumn 2019 and simply named The Settlers, the game runs on Massive’s Snowdrop Engine and heads to a new world. Will it live up to the old games? Maybe not but hey, maybe it will. There’s always hope, right?

Rogue-lite space sim is available along with Encounters DLC.

Rogue-lite arcade space sim Everspace has been making the rounds for a while on Xbox One and PC. It’s now available for PlayStation 4 though as Everspace Stellar Edition and costs $39.99. Along with the base game and Encounters DLC, it brings the soundtrack and a dynamic PS4 menu theme. Check out the launch trailer below.

Michael Schade, CEO of Rockfish Games, stated that, “We are incredibly proud of releasing our very first title for PlayStation, and we couldn’t be more excited that space game enthusiasts on PS4 can now join the ranks of over half a million space pilots already exploring the vastness of Everspace on PC and Xbox.

“Now PS4 players can experience the unique blend of roguelike game mechanics, exploration, storytelling, and fast-paced combat all set within a beautiful procedurally-generated fantasy sci-fi environment, too. And on PS4 Pro, they can even enjoy it in 4K or with improved visuals and at a higher framerate in Full HD”.

It’s also possible to pick up the base game for $29.99 and the Encounters DLC for $9.99 separately. Furthermore, Rockfish will be working with Limited Run Games to release Everspace Galactic Edition this Summer. Retailing for $39.99, it will include the Stellar Edition along with The Making of Everspace, a 28 page booklet.

Everspace isn’t your typically space sim title. Exploring space and various sectors, finding different factions to align with and new weapons to equip, the game will return to the beginning if you die. However, you can embark on a new “run” with some long-term upgrades that can be made. Encounters adds new questlines, factory space stations for upgrading mid-run and a new ship along with new devices and consumables.

Rockfish Games CEO confirms looking into a port as of a few weeks ago.

Rockfish Games’ rogue-lite action space sim Everspace has released on just about every relevant console thus far (with a PS4 version due in May). So why not for the Nintendo Switch as well? While speaking to WCCFTech, Rockfish Games CEO and co-founder Michael Schade confirmed that the company had already started looking into an Everspace port for the hybrid console several weeks ago.

Schade was asked whether Everspace could work on the Switch since it’s developed on Unreal Engine 4 and the platform fully supports it. He said, “For a team with its root in mobile gaming, we are super excited about the Switch, naturally. We have always loved the ubiquity of mobile gaming devices in general, and the Switch even comes with proper analog controllers which is very much needed if you want to have a proper console-style experience on the go – as much fun it was to play Galaxy on Fire 1 and 2 on smartphones and tablets, touch controls have never been the best fit for a 6DOF space shooter.”

He also feels that Nintendo’s approach – offering a mobile gaming experience but with premium pricing to ensure console-quality games – has proven successful enough. “More importantly, Nintendo’s DNA has always been a great ‘mobile’ gaming experience with a premium pricing policy keeping the perceived value of its games at console level and keeping the platform from being cluttered by too many shovelware. The success of the Switch proved Nintendo right, and we have started looking into an Everspace port a few weeks ago.”

There’s no concrete information to go off of for now though. “While I cannot share any further details about a release date or pricing, I definitely can share that our mobile gaming background already paid off: Everspace runs super smoothly, and it looks just gorgeous on the device. We still have to optimize the performance when running on the big screen, but we are getting there. So, stay tuned for more!”

Everspace is currently available for the Xbox One and PC. Along with numerous updates and bug fixes, it’s also seen a paid expansion with Encounters which brings new questlines, characters, tools, weapons and much more to the foray.

Xbox One X gets another point in full 4K

Rougelike Space Shooter, EVERSPACE is about to make it to PS4 after a lengthy exclusivity window for Microsoft platforms, which of course raises the question, which platform is the game better on? According to ROCKFISH Games, the Xbox One X has the muscle that PS4 Pro just doesn’t.

Wccftech would reach out to ROCKFISH CEO and co-founder Michael Schade to talk technical specs. According to Schade, EVERSPACE has never looked better on a console than the Xbox One X, which thanks to some porting to newer versions of Unreal Engine, can run at 30FPS at native 4K, or 60FPS at 1080p with improved effects. “There is no denying, for a console, the Xbox One X is a beast” said Schade.

Unfortunately, the PS4 Pro “does not provide the same oomph” as its competition, according to Schade. But even in Checkerboarded 4K, the game looks much better than it did before. No PSVR support is coming apparently either, natch.

Space dogfighting sim Everspace will be expanding its horizons on May 29th when it finally releases for PlayStation 4. Developed by Rockfish Games, the rogue-lite title first released for Xbox One and PC. It’s seen a number of updates and one paid DLC since launch.

Much like many roguelite titles, Everspace challenged players to explore a procedurally generated universe with different objectives, factions and upgrades to acquire. Though you could die on a run, there were permanent upgrades to unlock along the way that could make future playthroughs easier.

On PlayStation 4, players can purchase the base game for $29.99 or buy it with the Encounters DLC for $34.99. The DLC brings new quest lines, weapons, a new ship, different tools and much more to the experience. You can also pick up the Galactic Edition for $39.99 which has the base game, the Encounters DLC, the original soundtrack and a book that explains the development process. This version will be available at retail courtesy of BadLand Games.

Rockfish CEO talks about the past, present and future of Everspace.

Rockfish Games’ Everspace has had an interesting run in its lifetime. It came to Xbox One first as part of the Game Preview in 2016 and officially released for Steam earlier this year. Since then, the developer has polished it heavily and even pushed out a new DLC called Encounters for even more random fun. You wouldn’t think that something like roguelike space sim with dogfighting elements and a story would go far but Everspace managed it quite well.

To learn more about the game – and it’s imminent future – GamingBolt spoke to Rockfish CEO and Co-Founder Michael Schade. Schade also talks about the work that went into the expansion and whether a sequel will happen.

"We were mindful of the fact that there are many space-centric games out there, and to stand out amongst them we needed to find something to set us apart."

Everspace released in May 2017 on Steam and despite some issues, garnered a decent following. What are your thoughts on the game’s progress, both in terms of development and sales, since then?

We’re very happy with the sales as well as the positive response of both players and critics. Our current Metacritic score is 84 for Xbox, 79 for the PC version and the user rating on Steam is at an excellent 81 percent. Quite an achievement for a studio’s debut title, and it didn’t come easy.

To finance Everspace we had to create a Kickstarter campaign back in August 2015, followed by a Steam Early Access and Microsoft Preview Program release simultaneously in September 2016. Everspace has evolved quite a bit since then. We went into Early Access with only one player ship, with two added during Early Access. Recently, a fourth was added as part of the Encounters Expansion. Tons of new equipment and enemies have also been added to the world, as well as big features like Ship Enhancements, Hardcore Mode with true permadeath, and VR and HOTAS support.

We consider ourselves very lucky to have built a dedicated community who have helped us tremendously with their invaluable feedback to make Everspace better and better over the course if its development.

What inspired the concept of a rogue-lite space shooter, and one with such impressive graphics? There haven’t been a ton of recent games that have gone with this approach.

As you may know, our team is behind the critically acclaimed mobile games series, Galaxy on Fire. To us it felt obvious that another space game would be the best choice for a PC and console debut. There are still a lot of dedicated Galaxy on Fire fans who we were certain would be interested in its spiritual successor, along with players new to what we do.

We were mindful of the fact that there are many space-centric games out there, and to stand out amongst them we needed to find something to set us apart. While we’re massive fans of rogue-like space shooters, we wanted to go with the less punishing approach of a rogue-lite experience, with permanent progression, and instead of using 2D retro graphics, which we still also love, decided to go with top-notch, AAA visuals.

We felt this was something new that had not been done before, and had the potential to appeal to a wider audience. We believe Everspace can serve as an introduction to rogue-like mechanics for many players new to the genre, while still feeling fresh to gamers familiar with it, thus being able to offer a new and exciting experience for everyone.

You released a new major expansion, Encounters, with new quest lines, characters and much more. What’s the response been like thus far, and what challenges did you face in development?

The response has been great. We’re at a 97% positive rating on Steam for the expansion. Players really like the new ship and equipment, and have been praising the name-giving encounters, saying they add more depth and a new way to look at the game. We’ve really enjoyed the feedback.

Developing an expansion is no easy task. A few of the features and concepts that wound up in the expansion have been around for some time, but a lot of stuff had to be created from scratch, particularly the new ship. We knew we needed it though, as there was a lot of demand for it.

Luckily, the development time for Encounters was quite short, which was great because we wanted to get it out there rather quickly while there still was fresh buzz around the game, and players were probably at the point in Everspace where they would be ready for new content. We also wanted the expansion to be rather big, so players would be happy and feel that they got their money’s worth.

"We feel the new space creatures enrich the game world and offer some great surprises, and hopefully will encourage more exploration. We‘re particularly fond of the Scrap Anemone with its creepy tentacles."

How do you feel the Encounters expansion, for lack of a better word, expands on the Everspace universe, filling it with more stuff for players to do?

It was our intention that Encounters would be an expansion you could play any time, rather than after finishing the base game. We also didn’t want it to take place in a different game world, or be a part of a new game mode, but rather incorporated seamlessly with all of its various elements into the base game, so both veteran and new players alike could enjoy the expanded content. We feel this approach leads to a richer, fuller and more diverse Everspace universe experience for everyone. There’s definitely more to see and do to keep gamers engaged in the world.

The new Colonial Sentinel is intriguing. What other ship designs do you have in mind for the future? Will some of them be free?

Glad that you like the ship’s design and concept! We’re very fond of it as well. Envisioning what kind of ship it would be was more complicated than one might think. We originally did not plan on having more than three player ships, all very different and unique. We wanted to cover every type of ship we felt would fit the player’s needs.

The Interceptor is the all-rounder, the Scout is fragile but very agile and stealthy, and the Gunship slow but extremely powerful. What we eventually came up with was a medium class electronic warfare ship with a weaker hull, but strong shields, combined with some very cool exclusive gear and the largest amount of equipment slots available. It can only hold a single primary weapon, however, which puts a bigger focus on using a vast array of devices and consumables during each fight. It’s a really cool ship, and a fun challenge to master.

Regarding future ships, it will be difficult to come up with something new that has a place among the others. While there are currently no plans for further additions, you never know. Most likely if we add new ones, they will be variants of our existing ships. As of now we’ve not decided on a price point for potential future additions to the game.

What can you tell us about some of the new weapons, tools and space creatures? Which one is your favourite thus far (and which could be getting some additional tuning)?

We feel the new space creatures enrich the game world and offer some great surprises, and hopefully will encourage more exploration. We‘re particularly fond of the Scrap Anemone with its creepy tentacles.

Regarding new equipment, the Plasma-Powered-Jump, Target Decelerator and Drone Disassembler came as a free update, and Encounters added 16 new pieces of equipment, 40 if you take mods and MK2/ MK3 variants into account. We really like the Lightning Gun with its chain lightning effect; it comes in handy when dealing with crowds. Another favourite is the Neutron Cannon. It probably is the most powerful weapon in the game, but you won’t be able to use it too often since you can’t find it randomly, and crafting one is very resource- heavy.

"We are of course taking a sequel into consideration, but it’s a little early to think that far ahead."

Both the EMP Generator and the Static Discharger are very fun to use. We spent quite some time on balancing, which can be tricky as every piece of equipment has to be useful in certain situations, but must not be so powerful they’re game-breaking. We’ve made a lot of tweaks and changes in the last few months and always have an open ear for changes. The Drone Disassembler used to be too powerful in its first iteration, for example. Feedback is obviously helpful in situations such as this.

The G&B Factory is interesting because it allows players to repair their ship in the middle of a run. Do you feel such an addition makes the game “easier” for hardcore players?

Yes, encountering a G&B factory certainly has its advantages. It’s not only great for repairs, which you can also get at service stations, but also having access to the refinery, where players can get their hands on resources needed for ship upgrades, and vital temporal boosts. It definitely makes aspects of the game easier. We had non-veterans in mind with this addition. That said, you’ll have to find a G&B Factory first.

Will there be more significant expansions like Encounters in the coming year? Will there be any larger expansion packs retailing for higher prices that bring even more to the game?

We can’t say just yet. We will first have to see if the Encounters expansion does well. The critical reception has been quite positive, but it’s a little too early to tell if further additions make sense from a financial point of view. If people love what we’ve done so far, we hope they continue supporting it in such a way that it makes sense to build on what we’ve already created.

What are your thoughts on potentially launching Everspace for other platforms like VR or the PS4?

We’re currently working on a PS4 version and hope to release it in Q1 2018. It looks very promising and we can’t wait to see how our game is received by the PlayStation community. We won’t be offering PSVR support though. It took a lot of time to get the PC VR version ready, and there seems to be more titles that are VR exclusive for good reason, like performance optimization and gameplay that works well with VR. While VR players immensely enjoy traversing our beautiful Everspace universe, the game is probably a little too fast-paced for the optimal VR experience.

How long will it be until a sequel is released? How much support can we expect for Everspace for the foreseeable future?

We are of course taking a sequel into consideration, but it’s a little early to think that far ahead. We’re still a fairly small team and are currently busy with the planned Encounters release on Xbox One, the 4k support for Xbox One X, the official Linux version release and the aforementioned PlayStation port. We’re also evaluating the possibility of a Nintendo Switch port. We are very dedicated to supporting Everspace. We’re reading every forum message and looking out for any bugs that need fixing and evaluating all of the feedback we’re getting.

"Still, it is the nature of consoles that they can never compare to the very latest gaming PCs."

Do you think Microsoft’s mandate for not allowing Xbox One X exclusives will hold back its true potential?

It is more time-consuming for developers to offer a game that works well on two different platforms, instead of focusing on one and being able to make the most of it. On the other hand, it’s nice for consumers that they are not forced into getting a new console just to play a game. And of course, it’s an advantage that if they do get the Xbox One X, they will still be able to play a game that they already own with the addition of upgraded graphics. Lastly, if your game is also for PC, you must optimize it for a broad range of hardware specs.

What is the one thing that you like about the Xbox One X?

We’re still not finished with the Xbox One X version, but so far so good. We’ll update you if anything surprising happens.

Does the Xbox One X have enough power to render games in native 4K?

It really depends on the frame rate you would like to achieve, the type of game and the amount of graphical effects. Some games can be more CPU than GPU bound. I’d say it’s certainly possible. We’re still not done with our work on the Xbox One X version, so it’s maybe a little early to say anything definitively.

How much more powerful do you think the Xbox One X is compared to the Xbox One and PS4 Pro?

We can’t give exact values on the Xbox One X, but with the same graphics settings and resolution we get a much higher frame rate compared to the Xbox One. This enables us to increase the graphics as well as the resolution and still have a higher frame rate than on Xbox One. We also seem to be getting slightly better results compared to the PlayStation 4 Pro.

"It is more time-consuming for developers to offer a game that works well on two different platforms, instead of focusing on one and being able to make the most of it."

Is the x86 architecture of the consoles helping in reducing the gap between consoles and PC?

Yes, it definitely is an advantage that they are closer in architecture. It will reduce development time and enable consoles to benefit from new hardware sooner.

How do you think the Xbox One X compares against a modern gaming PC?

It seems to be the most powerful console to date, and certainly offers a very attractive package for gamers. Still, it is the nature of consoles that they can never compare to the very latest gaming PCs. You, for example, can’t get a graphics card upgrade yourself on a console. On the other hand, you don’t have to worry about games being released that your graphics card won’t be able to handle properly.

Which PC GPU does the Xbox One X’s GPU come close to?

It uses and AMD card with 6 teraflops and 12GB GDDR5, so it probably compares to a GeForce GTX 1060. It does have more memory, but the Xbox One X uses a weaker CPU compared to the latest gaming PCs, which must be taken into consideration as well.

Do you want more gamers to play Everspace on the Xbox One X?

Certainly! Everspace still looks great on the Xbox One, but compared to the highest settings on a PC we had to reduce the graphics slightly, so that they are closer to medium PC settings. On the Xbox One X the game looks and plays much better, so of course we prefer players experience the game that way.

The number of titles that support the Xbox One X continues to grow and even if there’s no official patch per say, the console is capable of boosting a game’s frame rate and resolution on its own. Still, there’s no denying that a game running at the same graphics settings and resolution on the Xbox One X provides a significant boost to performance compared to the base Xbox One as well.

GamingBolt spoke to Rockfish Games CEO Michael Schade, whose studio brought us the rogue-lite title Everspace on the Xbox One and asked how much faster the Xbox One X was in direct comparison. Schade responded that, “We can’t give exact values on the Xbox One X, but with the same graphics settings and resolution we get a much higher frame rate compared to the Xbox One. This enables us to increase the graphics as well as the resolution and still have a higher frame rate than on Xbox One.”

Schade also made sure to note that, “We also seem to be getting slightly better results compared to the PlayStation 4 Pro.” He didn’t provide exact details on this but it is quite similar to how other developers are also benefiting from the Xbox One X.

The Xbox One X is currently available worldwide for $499 and has been doing pretty good business according to Microsoft. What are your thoughts on the console? Let us know below and stay tuned for our full interview soon.

Can the Xbox One X provide native 4K in more graphically demanding titles? Rockfish's CEO responds.

We’ve seen the Xbox One X perform admirably well when it comes to native 4K in games like Fallout 4 and so on. However, what we’re really wondering is if the console will be able to handle even more graphically demanding titles at native 4K or default to other techniques to get it done. After all, if the console was marketed off the promises of 4K gaming, it’s a given that it should offer native 4K results.

GamingBolt turned to Rockfish Games CEO Michael Schade, who’s company brought us Everspace, and asked if the Xbox One X (in his opinion) had enough graphical horsepower to natively render more graphically demanding games at native 4K. Or perhaps it would go for “shortcuts” like checkerboard rendering instead?

Schade responded that, “It really depends on the frame rate you would like to achieve, the type of game and the amount of graphical effects. Some games can be more CPU than GPU bound. I’d say it’s certainly possible. We’re still not done with our work on the Xbox One X version, so it’s maybe a little early to say anything definitively.”

We also asked if the performance gap is shrinking because consoles are more like PCs now with their x86 architecture. “Yes, it definitely is an advantage that they are closer in architecture. It will reduce development time and enable consoles to benefit from new hardware sooner.”

Having released worldwide on November 7th for $499, the Xbox One X has certainly been performing well in sales, at least according to Microsoft. Stay tuned for our full interview with Michael Schade in the coming days.

Rockfish CEO Michael Schade talks about the positives and negatives of the Xbox One X versus a modern gaming PC.

With the Xbox One X available worldwide and Microsoft apparently selling a decent number of units (official numbers directly from Microsoft are still hard to come by), we’re starting to see how the so-called “most powerful console” works in real world applications. Performance in specific games is up to the developers in question but that doesn’t mean the Xbox One X doesn’t pack a lot of power compared to its predecessor. The question, then, is obvious – if it’s indeed the most powerful console, how well does it stack up to a modern gaming PC?

To answer this question, we spoke to Rockfish Games CEO and co-founder Michael Schade whose studio brought out the intriguing and fun rogue-lite space sim Everspace. Schade admitted that the Xbox One X was the most powerful console till date but consoles will likely never catch up with gaming PCs in that regard.

“It seems to be the most powerful console to date, and certainly offers a very attractive package for gamers. Still, it is the nature of consoles that they can never compare to the very latest gaming PCs. You, for example, can’t get a graphics card upgrade yourself on a console. On the other hand, you don’t have to worry about games being released that your graphics card won’t be able to handle properly,” said Schade.

In terms of performance, the Xbox One X’s GPU does somewhat compare to the GeForce GTX 1060. Of course, the CPU is also a bottleneck since it’s significantly weaker than what you’d find in a top-tier gaming PC.

“It uses an AMD card with 6 teraflops and 12GB GDDR5, so it probably compares to a GeForce GTX 1060. It does have more memory, but the Xbox One X uses a weaker CPU compared to the latest gaming PCs, which must be taken into consideration as well.”

What are your thoughts on the Xbox One X’s power? Let us know in the comments below. Stay tuned for our full interview soon.
