Two free games on offer for both Xbox One and Xbox 360.

It’s a new month and that means some new free games for Xbox Live Gold subscribers via Microsoft’s Games With Gold initiative.

The Xbox One will be receiving two free games with Castlestorm: Definitive Edition and Pool Nation FX. The latter is pretty straightforward (it’s pool, for crying out loud) while the former has been described as a side-scrolling action RPG wherein you must defend your castle from an onslaught of enemies. You can rally several different units like knights and even donkeys together with a variety of different of weapons to achieve this.

Meanwhile, on the Xbox 360, the first free game today is Mafia 2. This open world, old-school crime epic had a rather long development cycle but finally released in 2010. It’s gotten some above average praise for its storyline and is well worth a shot since it’s free. F1 2013 will be the next free game, available on May 16th till the end of the month.

What are your thoughts on this month’s free games? Let us know in the comments.

Running on full reds.

F1 2013 begins the same way regardless of your skill level, or familiarity with the sport: with the young driver test at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi. It’s a two day event that goes over the basic mechanics of Formula One racing, and tests your skills in handling, cornering, braking, and wet and dry weather conditions. It’s a must play for new drivers, and it’s the best way to familiarize yourself with the ins and outs of Formula One cars and the way they perform, racing terms, and the game’s mechanics.

It’s a good thing, too, as F1 2013 is an extremely complicated game. Like most sims, the game requires patience, skill, knowledge, and more than a little luck to succeed. The cars handle differently depending on the way you tune them, the tyres you use, and the weather conditions on the track. Run off the side, and marbles will get caught in your tires, reducing your cars ability to take turns until they fall off. Take a turn too fast, and you’ll spin off the track. Brake too late and you might crash into the car in front of you. This isn’t anything new, and veterans of the series will no doubt have no trouble with the game’s nuances.

"Career mode allows you to create your own racer and join a team as a rookie. From there, you’ll race through a season composed of full, three day race weekends. Do well, and you’ll earn upgrades for your car, and maybe even contract offers from some of the better teams."

Thankfully, Codemasters has also included a number of driving assists for the rest of us mere mortals, which can be tweaked in real time. Lower difficulties allow you to use a limited number of Flashbacks, which let you rewind time and retry that turn that you took a little too fast. In addition, you can now save mid-session in nearly any race, which provides an extra layer of protection should you desire it, and means that you won’t have to tackle the game’s longer races in one sitting. Even with the assists, however, new drivers should be prepared to put in a fairly substantial amount of time and more than a few loses before everything clicks.

Once you’re comfortable in the driver’s seat, there are a number of modes to tackle. Career mode allows you to create your own racer and join a team as a rookie. From there, you’ll race through a season composed of full, three day race weekends. Do well, and you’ll earn upgrades for your car, and maybe even contract offers from some of the better teams. If you perform well at the young driver test, better teams will off you contracts right off the bat. They’ll provide you with better cars, more possibilities for upgrades, and better teammates to race with, but they’ll expect more from you.

Likewise, the teams that are lower on the totem pole don’t have as much to offer, but they’ll expect less. It’s a fine balancing act that mirrors the races themselves, and provides players of all skill levels with a way to get into the season and start racing. Thankfully, Career mode can be restarted at any time, so you’re not stuck if you make a bad decision of feel like you had the skills to drive for a more prestigious team.

"Another new addition is F1 Classics mode, which allows you to take control of famous drivers from the 80s and race around classic tracks in their old rides. Unfortunately, the standard edition of the game only allows access to two tracks, Jerez and Brands Hatch, five cars, and ten drivers."

If you’re looking for a similar experience without the time commitment, Season Challenge offers a ten race season with five laps per race, and one-shot qualifying races. In this mode, you’ll choose another driver as a rival and try to outrace him over the course of the season in order to take his spot on his team. It’s a nice middle ground for players who want the multi-race experience of Career mode, without having to go through the grind.

There’s also Scenario mode, which is a new addition to this year’s title. In this mode, you’ll take command of your custom driver and try to beat twenty unique racing challenges, each of which represents a time in your F1 career, from the first race of your rookie season to the last race of your final year. Challenges might be as simple as defeating your teammate, or as complex as recovering from a bad pit stop or fighting against a 10 second penalty. These challenges are well-designed and a lot of fun, and since each one requires a minimal time commitment, there’s a lot of incentive to return later on and compete on the harder difficulties.

Another new addition is F1 Classics mode, which allows you to take control of famous drivers from the 80s and race around classic tracks in their old rides. Unfortunately, the standard edition of the game only allows access to two tracks, Jerez and Brands Hatch, five cars, and ten drivers, though it should be noted that additional cars, tracks, and drivers from the 80s and 90s are available in the Classic’s Edition of the game, or as DLC for standard edition owners.

"The game also offers more traditional modes, such as Time Trial, and Time Attack, which challenge you with setting the best possible time on a track under the conditions of your choice, and beating the ghost of another racer, respectively."

The classic cars are much harder to handle than their modern day counterparts, and provide a nice change of pace, as well as a formidable and rewarding challenge. Unfortunately, there are only a few classic cars and drivers available, even with the Classic Edition’s addition, which means that races will only consist of ten cars at any given time.

Codemasters offsets this limitation by providing Grand Prix, Scenario, Time Attack, and Time Trial options for Classics mode. In addition, any races undertaken in Classics mode feature a retro user interface, an old-school take on the game’s graphics, and an optional color filter. In addition, each race features legendary F1 commentator Murray Walker. These touches go a long way to sell the authenticity of Classics mode, but the limited amount of cars, drivers, and tracks, combined with the fact that Scenario mode only includes a few races, makes Classics mode more of a fun, greatest hits-esque diversion than a substantial, stand alone mode.

The game also offers more traditional modes, such as Time Trial, and Time Attack, which challenge you with setting the best possible time on a track under the conditions of your choice, and beating the ghost of another racer, respectively. The standard Grand Prix mode returns as well, which allows you to compete as any one of the season’s drivers in anything from single races to full race weekends. The game also features split-screen, online, and LAN-based multiplayer, and there’s even a Co-op Championship mode so you can race through the entire season with a friend.

"The game’s mechanical excellence is complimented by its incredible visual design. The cars and tracks are rendered beautifully, if somewhat clinically, and it’s a joy to watch a tight pack turn in formation under the glow of a setting sun, or watch the water spin up from under your tires as you accelerate down a straightaway."

All of this, however, wouldn’t matter if F1 2013 wasn’t up to snuff in the more important aspect of all: the racing. Fear not; it is. The game lets you customize nearly everything about your racing experience. You can choose the type of tyres you’ll use on a specific track, schedule your pit stops, and even tune the various aspects of your car, which adds a great deal of depth to the game. The cars themselves handle extremely well once you get the hang of things, and the tracks are well-designed, while rival racers are smart enough to know when to hang back and maintain position, and when to take advantage of a mistake you’ve made. The game will punish you for making mistakes, but players who take their time, race well, and watch the status of their tyres and fuel will find F1 2013 to be a rewarding experience.

That said, the game is very arbitrary about doling out penalties, and those penalties only ever seem to apply to you. I’ve blatantly run into other racers many times, sometimes completely destroying their vehicles, and never been penalized, but I can’t count the times I’ve been run off the road by another driver only to be penalized for “causing a crash.” Many of these moments can be mitigated by Flashbacks or mid-session saves, but it’s still frustrating to be punished after you’ve been run off the road by another racer and lost five or six positions as a result. It a minor qualm in a game that is largely excellent, but it can get frustrating in longer races.

The game’s mechanical excellence is complimented by its incredible visual design. The cars and tracks are rendered beautifully, if somewhat clinically, and it’s a joy to watch a tight pack turn in formation under the glow of a setting sun, or watch the water spin up from under your tires as you accelerate down a straightaway.

"The new additions to the game are more iterative than innovative, and the new modes, Scenario mode aside, do not offer enough content to be considered meaningful additions to the game. Ironically, F1 2013 is a grand representation on the state of Formula One itself, and the current state of video games."

The sound design is excellent as well. The cars feel fast, thanks in no small part to how powerful they sound. Crashes are loud and brutal, spin-outs are shrieking reminder of your failure on a particular turn, and the spray of water as it leaps beneath your tires is frightening, even when you’ve taken a turn perfectly. On top of the sounds of the track, you’ll also be fed information about your performance, the state of your car, and your rivals by your pit crew. They might inform you that you have a better time on the section ahead then the car in front of you does, or that the car behind you is running full reds, and is trying hard to close the gap between you. The attention to detail here is impressive and incredibly helpful, and it goes a long way to selling the game’s authenticity.

For all of its excellence, however, F1 2013 is a difficult game to judge. It does what it does extremely well, but it suffers from many of the same problems that plague many other yearly franchises. The new additions to the game are more iterative than innovative, and the new modes, Scenario mode aside, do not offer enough content to be considered meaningful additions to the game. Ironically, F1 2013 is a grand representation on the state of Formula One itself, and the current state of video games.

Hopefully, the changes coming to Formula One in the near future and the release of the next gen consoles will allow the next game in the series to be more than just another yearly update. Until then, however, F1 2013 offers a compelling reason for veterans and new players alike to keep racing, even if the track they’re on is one they’ve seen before.

EA Sports’ FIFA 14 is still hanging on to the top spot across all platforms in the UK according the latest UKIE Game Charts courtesy Gfk Chart Track. Unsurprisingly, Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto V is still at number two – considering that it took a game like FIFA to unseat it after one week at the top, don’t count on it dropping further for a while.

Codemasters’ F1 2013 entered the charts in the third position while Nintendo’s The Legend Of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD managed to debut at fourth position following positive critical reception for both games. The remainder of the top 10 is fairly predictable, with Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition, Disney Infinity, NBA 2K14, Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Blacklist, Just Dance 2014 and Pro Evolution Soccer 2014.

Considering that FIFA 14’s sales are down compared to last year’s FIFA 13, will it continue to reign for the remainder of the year? Or will Grand Theft Auto V, which has already outsold its predecessor, ascend the throne again? Stay tuned.

Codemasters’ F1 2013 is finally available for Europe on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. A launch trailer has been released for the same, which you can check out above. It has Formula One cars; it’s quite nice. It also outlines the dramatic use of slow-motion with pit-crews and racing. Again, worth a look.

F1 2013 is based on the official 2013 Formula One season, with 19 circuits and four “classic” circuits, 11 teams and 22 drivers. However, the most important feature is the F1 Classics mode, which focuses on drivers, cars and races from the 80s and 90s. These same vehicles and drivers will be available online for multiplayer. The game will be available in a Standard Edition and Classic Edition, with the latter featuring an introduction by Murray Walker, who also does commentary during the Classics mode.

F1 2013 will also be available in North America on October 8th 2013. Check out our exclusive interview with the developer here for more details.

Game Director Paul Jeal gives us the goods.

Racing games have always been a hot property, but the number of realistic racing simulators has always been slightly less. This is due to the sheer amount of effort, in research, development and implementation, to accurately model these cars. And when you figure in cars and races from the 80’s and 90’s, it gets all the more difficult. Not that this is stopping Codemasters Birmingham, which is developing F1 2013. The game not only features drivers, cars and tracks from the official 2013 Formula One season, but will also be going back in time with Classics Mode to visit the famous races of yore.

We recently spoke to Game Director Paul Jeal for his take on the Classics Mode, the sparsity of other Formula One racing games and why an F1 2012 player should check out what F1 2013 has to offer.

Ravi Sinha: F1 2013 will feature a Classics Mode that lets players relive famous races from the 80s and 90s. What influenced the decision to include this mode?

Paul Jeal: Classic content is comfortably the most requested feature we have ever had, whether that’s from press or fans of the sport. People want to recreate races they saw when they were growing up and to drive as their former heroes in iconic cars.

"We give players a full suite of options in setting up their races, do they want to practice, qualify or just race? How long do they want the race to be? What level of AI do they want to compete against? And also what help do they want in driving the car."

With this in mind it has been something that we’ve wanted to do since we signed the F1 license in 2008 but it has been a very complicated process and it has taken a long time to secure the relevant licenses. Many of the teams have changed ownership several times in the intervening years, some no longer exist. There are issues with sponsorship and liveries as we cannot show alcohol or cigarette sponsor for example.

Our licensing team has done an amazing job to secure the content that they have for F1 2013 but we see this as very much the start point for us and classic content.

Ravi Sinha: Given the sparsity of most other F1 games in the past few years, where does F1 2013 stand at this point? Is it more about catering to die-hard racing fans or trying to grow a new audience?

Paul Jeal: This is always a difficult balancing act as there are very separate groups who play our game. Firstly we have the hard core fans who play full race weekends with legendary AI and no driver aids, then at the other end of the spectrum are the more casual players who are F1 fans but want a more accessible experience. Then there are also various groups that fall in between these two schools. Were possible we try to cater for both of the entire audiences.

We give players a full suite of options in setting up their races, do they want to practice, qualify or just race? How long do they want the race to be? What level of AI do they want to compete against? And also what help do they want in driving the car. One of the main differences this year is that the braking assist is scalable. In past years it has just been on or off. That meant that with braking assist on the car could feel almost like it was driving itself and players felt a disassociation so turned it off. However, the jump from on to off was too stark and meant that players were going off at every turn. By making the braking assist scalable a player can now steadily tone down the level of assist allowing them to learn braking points and also the right speeds and gears for the corners on a circuit. The whole key of F1 is not just being fast but being consistent and the best way to do this is to learn the circuits, including the braking points.

We’re also trying to open up longer race distances to a wider audience with the addition of Mid-Session Save. This means that you can save at any point and come back to your race weekend at a later date. Longer races are where F1 really comes into its own as it opens up more possibilities for race strategy, tyre and fuel management and also aspects such as changing weather conditions. We sincerely hope that the ability to save and come back to a race will encourage more people to take on the longer races.

Ravi Sinha: With a release so close to that of next-gen consoles like the PS4 and Xbox One, why is F1 2013 only releasing for current-gen platforms?

Paul Jeal: When we make the transition to next gen we want to do it right. We didn’t feel that we had enough time to do that this year.

"Taking a modern car onto a classic track is a real challenge. The design and layout of those circuits is quite different to what you get in modern F1 with some very tricky technical sections. "

Ravi Sinha: What can you tell us about multiplayer and the different modes we’ll see? What kind of in-game challenges can we expect with RaceNet?

Paul Jeal: The main addition to multiplayer, besides lots of changes behind the scenes, is the addition of the classic content (cars and circuits) to the multiplayer section of the game. We think people are going to have a lot of fun racing these classic cars online. Besides that you can also race all of the 2013 cars and circuits with up to 16 human players online and compliment this with a further 6 AI drivers to create a full grid.

In addition the introduction of RaceNet to the game enables us to send challenges to the game. For example: Can you beat Vettel’s pole time at Monza? RaceNet also allows us to track exactly how people are playing our game which enables us to make more informed decisions in the future. We have a lot of exciting plans for the further integration of RaceNet in years to come.

Ravi Sinha: It’s been mentioned that racers will be able to take the classic cars online to race against other players. How do you balance the aspect of old vehicles vs. new vehicles in these kinds of races? Also, what kind of difference does it make to take new cars onto old tracks?

Paul Jeal: You cannot mix cars from different eras (80s, 90s, 2013) so that helps to limit the imbalance. Obviously a car from the start of the 80s is slower than one from the end of that decade but they are still a lot of fun regardless. Each of the cars has very different handling characteristics so while some may be slower than others in a straight line, they may be more suitable to someone’s driving style.

Taking a modern car onto a classic track is a real challenge. The design and layout of those circuits is quite different to what you get in modern F1 with some very tricky technical sections.

Rashid Sayed: F1 2012 on the PC was startling to look at. How are you guys improving the visuals even further this time around?

Paul Jeal: We have a new Art Director in the team and have also lost HRT from the grid enabling us to free up some much needed memory. Both of these factors have enabled us to push the visuals still further. We have a new lighting solution which has really bought the tracks and garages to life but the main advance for me has to be the car models. We have changed the way we create the cars so now the textures are much higher, meaning that they are much clearer when you are close up. This in turn has allowed us more flexibility when it comes to things such as camera placement for replays.

"We have changed the way we create the cars so now the textures are much higher, meaning that they are much clearer when you are close up. This in turn has allowed us more flexibility when it comes to things such as camera placement for replays. "

Rashid Sayed: Coming back to the classics mode, how many vehicles and tracks will the final version of the game include? Additionally are there plans to extend the classic mode via DLC?

Paul Jeal: Here’s how it is broken down:

1980s Cars & Drivers:

1980 Williams FW07B – Original Driver: Alan Jones, Team Legend: Alain Prost

1986 Lotus 98T – Team Legend: Mario Andretti, Team Legend: Emerson Fittipaldi

1988 Ferrari F1-87/88C – Original Driver: Gerhard Berger, Team Legend: Michael Schumacher

1988 Lotus Honda 100T – Original Driver: Satuo Nakajima, Team Legend: Mika Hakkinen

1988 Williams FW12 – Original Driver: Nigel Mansell, Team Legend: Damon Hill

1980s Tracks – Brands Hatch and Jerez

1990s Cars & Drivers:

1992 Ferrari F92 A – Original Driver: Jean Alesi, Original Driver: Ivan Capelli

1992 Williams FW14B – Original Driver: Nigel Mansell, Team Legend: David Coulthard

1996 Ferrari F310 – Original Driver: Michael Schumacher, Team Legend: Gerhard Berger

1996 Williams FW18 – Original Driver: Damon Hill, Original Driver: Jacques Villeneuve

1999 Ferrari F399 – Original Driver: Eddie Irvine, Team Legend: Jody Scheckter

1999 Williams FW21 – Original Driver: Ralf Schumacher, Team Legend: Alain Prost

1990s Tracks – Imola and Estoril

The 1980s cars, tracks and drivers are included with every copy of the game while the 1990s cars, drivers and tracks are available either as DLC post release or as part of the Classic Edition. At present we don’t have any plans for any further DLC outside of that.

Rashid Sayed: Tell us why an existing F1 2012 player should upgrade to F1 2013?

Paul Jeal: Besides the addition of the classic content, which is a big win for us we have done a lot of work on the 2013 aspect of the game to take it forward a great deal from last year. We have spent a lot of time refining existing areas of the game such as handling, weather and AI and making some pretty significant graphical improvements with our new lighting engine.

"Mid-session save is a very useful and welcome addition to the F1 Franchise, as Formula One really comes alive during those longer races when you get to experience more of the tyre, fuel and pit strategy elements, possible weather changes or safety car periods as well as managing your car to avoid or minimise mechanical faults from developing. "

On top of that we have a brand new scenario mode this year with 20 pre-set scenarios to race, in addition to the inclusion of a mid-session save. This allows players to save their game at any time, even during a race, and come back to it at a later date. This is a very useful and welcome addition to the F1 Franchise, as Formula One really comes alive during those longer races when you get to experience more of the tyre, fuel and pit strategy elements, possible weather changes or safety car periods as well as managing your car to avoid or minimise mechanical faults from developing.

Rashid Sayed: What are your thoughts on next generation consoles and how will the F1 franchise benefit from them if you ever make a next gen version?

Paul Jeal: The next generation consoles are obviously very exciting as they give us more power to play with – something that every developer craves. It not only opens up the possibility of better visuals running at a higher frame rate at a better resolution but also gives us more scope to work on aspects such as car handling and AI.

It is definitely something we are thinking about but for the moment the main focus is on getting F1 2013 finished and making it as good a game as possible.

A big thank you to Jen Chong from 47 for setting this interview up.

New game looks at pushing the boundary of the series even more.

When F1 2013 was revealed, a lot of jaws dropped at how stunning it looked. It looked stunning and realistic, and simply put, the graphics got a lot of attention. Ahead of the game’s release, the developers decided to spill the beans on a lot of things in a bare-all interview with GamingBolt. This included the graphics.

‘We have a new Art Director in the team and have also lost HRT from the grid enabling us to free up some much needed memory,’ said Paul Jean, Game Director on F1 2013. ‘Both of these factors have enabled us to push the visuals still further.

‘We have a new lighting solution which has really bought the tracks and garages to life but the main advance for me has to be the car models. We have changed the way we create the cars so now the textures are much higher, meaning that they are much clearer when you are close up. This in turn has allowed us more flexibility when it comes to things such as camera placement for replays.’

He also talked about the much talked about decision to include the Classics mode in the upcoming game.

‘Classic content is comfortably the most requested feature we have ever had, whether that’s from press or fans of the sport. People want to recreate races they saw when they were growing up and to drive as their former heroes in iconic cars.

‘With this in mind it has been something that we’ve wanted to do since we signed the F1 license in 2008 but it has been a very complicated process and it has taken a long time to secure the relevant licenses. Many of the teams have changed ownership several times in the intervening years, some no longer exist. There are issues with sponsorship and liveries as we cannot show alcohol or cigarette sponsor for example.

‘Our licensing team has done an amazing job to secure the content that they have for F1 2013 but we see this as very much the start point for us and classic content,’ he signed off, possibly hinting at growth in scope and potential for the mode in the coming years.
