In a statement on their website, Bungie have claimed that the reveal of a an MMO project at GDC was in fact a “joke”

“Now, in rehearsal Aldridge was convinced that everybody got the joke. It was all in the delivery, he assured us, and he was certain it was clear that he was playfully riffing off of the recent rumors.”

Some are speculating that this is, in itself, a joke; a cover up.

During an audience Q&A session at GDC Peter Vesterbacka, an executive for Rovio the creators of Angry Birds, was asked a fairly straightforward question by a man named Erin Catto:

“Er, um, yes hello. I was wondering, what physics engine do you use in Angry Birds?”

“Box2D”

“Is there any chance you could credit it on Angry Birds…?”

(long pause) “Sure.”

“Great, I’m the creator of the Box2D engine.”

The crowd then erupted with applause and Vesterbacka asked to talk to him after the session. There appears to be no ill feeling from Mr. Catto towards Rovio and reports claim that the company have promised to promote the engine on all future Angry Birds games.

Fans of Mirror’s Edge may have been disheartened by reports last month that a prototype sequel to the game had been rejected and development on the project had ceased. Earlier today at GDC Frank Gibeau, EA Games President, stated “We’re looking at ideas for it, absolutely,” he continued “We just haven’t figured out the right way to bring it back yet. It was a franchise that reached an audience, but it didn’t reach a large audience, and from a quality standpoint it was good, not great. Working with DICE, we’re really trying to figure out a way of bringing Faith and the Mirror’s Edge property back, but we just really haven’t crafted the idea yet. We’re looking at it.” Nothing concrete yet but still some hope for fans of the free running action title.

We didn’t get a chance to see Epic show off their latest on the Unreal Engine 3.971 at GDC this year, which definitely cannot produce anything a console can up hold currently. The good news is that VG247 did and the screens below show off the latest work being done with Unreal 3 technology and still stands to be one of the greatest gaming engines ever made. The latest technology in the Unreal 3 Engine is explained to be tools for creating the next generation of consoles, PC’s and gaming in general. The smoking man is just a demonstration and does not link to any specific game title.

GDC organisers have confirmed that DICE’s yet to be shown Battlefield 3 will be getting a session over at their conference next year.

Kenny Magnusson of the Swedish developer will be taking to the stage in SF and will preside over a session caleed “Lightning You up in Battlefield 3” which will showcase the “the technical implementation of the art direction in BATTLEFIELD 3, the workflows we created for it as well as how all the individual lighting components fit together: deferred rendering, HDR, dynamic radiosity and particle lighting.” Neat, no?

GDC gonna take place in Spring next year, which means you can expect a formal announcement of the game in the not too distant future (cough…VGA 2010…sneeze).

Look what EA Games VP, Patrick Soderlund told recently:

“You’ll know probably sooner than I will. You are going to be able to see it in the not too distant future. The marketing guys would kill me if I told you when,” he said earlier in the month.

Gears of War 3, Final Fantasy and Pixar have also been confirmed to appear at the event next year. More updates as they come in.
