With this feature, we will be taking a look at 15 of the best games that have some of the most entertaining first and final hours.

Some games have the tendency to grab you from the very first hour and refuse to let go until the credits roll; these titles know how to set the stage with memorable first hours. This can be achieved through gripping set-pieces, emotional hooks, or ominous atmospheres, or a mixture of these ideas. These games are defining examples of how to deliver memorable narratives, and this feature will run down 15 such games that deliver some of the most mind-blowing first and final hours.

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty

Metal Gear Solid 2 was a cultural shift for the franchise, solidifying the brand as a household name in the action-adventure genre. Based on themes of the rapid spread of misinformation in the technology age and how it affects society at large, the opening hours start on a high note as you begin to explore the USS Discovery and get familiar with the new controls. The final hours start to question everything that you know about the narrative: your allies, your motivation, and the ever-looming questions about who’s right or wrong in a world that’s ruled by biased information.

Joshua Ortega, who co-directed and wrote Gears of War 2, seems to be suggesting that he's back working on the franchise with The Coalition.

The Coalition was one of several first party Xbox studios to be affected by Microsoft’s recent round of mass layoffs, following which it was reported that the studio had cancelled development on two unannounced projects. It’s been reported that the next mainline instalment in the Gears of War series – which, as per job listings, has started development – will be the studio’s next game, and it seems it has recruited a former Gears of War veteran to work on the project.

Joshua Ortega, who worked on Gears of War 2 at Epic Games as its writer and co-director, seems to have joined The Coalition to work on the franchise once again. Though it’s not been explicitly announced, Ortega recently took to Twitter and said in a tweet referring to his work on the aforementioned Gears of War 2, “Once again it’s on!”

When asked if that meant he was back working on the franchise, he refused to confirm or deny one way or the other, with his response only reading, “Hmm…”

Whether that means Ortega is working on Gears 6 at The Coalition remains to be officially confirmed, while it also remains unknown what exact role he will have on the project, if he is indeed working on it. We’ll be keeping an eye out for more updates on the matter, so stay tuned.

Netflix revealed the sales milestone after announcing a live-action feature film and animated series for the cover shooter.

Amid the sales updates by various companies today, Netflix revealed that the Gears of War series sold over 40 million copies. The streaming platform recently announced that a live-action feature film and animated series for the series were in development in partnership with The Coalition.

Gears of War debuted in November 2006 for the Xbox 360, developed by Epic Games. Following several sequels and a spin-off, it reportedly didn’t know what to do with the IP and sold it to Microsoft in 2014. The Coalition would form, developing Gears of War Ultimate Edition (a remaster of the original) and further sequels in Gears of War 4 and Gears 5. There was also the strategy spin-off Gears Tactics.

What’s next for the series? A job listing suggested that development is underway on the campaign for Gears 6. The Coalition also sought a motion capture technician specifically for the series, which could be further proof of the sequel being in development. Rumors have also suggested a Gears of War Collection to be in the works, though it hasn’t been officially announced.

Charting the highs and higher highs of Microsoft's third person shooter franchise.

Very few franchises have had the kind of impact on the industry that Gears of War did when Epic Games and Microsoft first launched it back in 2006, so it’s not hard to understand why the third person shooter series has been as valuable for Microsoft as something like Halo or Forza since its inception. Sure, it’s had its ups and downs, and yes, many might say that it has lost its prestige over time, and that it isn’t on the same level anymore under The Coalition’s guidance as it used to be under Epic Games- but even when it’s flying relatively low, Gears is still worth paying attention to. Here, we’re going to rank all mainline Gears of War games from worst to best- though really, a more appropriate way of ranking them would be from solid to spectacular.

#7. GEARS OF WAR: JUDGMENT

Gears of War: Judgment definitely feels like the most inessential game in the series, that’s for sure, and there’s certainly a lot about the game that felt like a bit of a letdown. Not all of the changes it made to the core formula were for the better, and even with that in mind, it didn’t make enough changes, which meant that it just didn’t get that balance right. Even so, it had some solid multiplayer content on offer, with Overrun in particular being a great mode, while for series fans, the story was also quite enjoyable, providing greater backstory and context for some beloved characters that didn’t always necessarily get too much of the spotlight. Certainly not Gears’ best moment, but far from bad even so.

#6. GEARS OF WAR 4

When Microsoft established The Coalition and tasked the new studio with overseeing the Gears of War franchise and safely guiding it into the future, the developer had a whole lot to live up to with its first Gears game. With Gears of War 4, they decided to take a safe approach, and that, perhaps, wasn’t something that people were hoping for. While many felt that the series needed a reinvention, Gears of War 4 was instead content to play things by the rulebook- but that didn’t mean it wasn’t a great game. It introduced great new characters, delivered a tightly crafted campaign with excellent mechanics and memorable shootouts, and quite a few memorable set piece moments that rank as some of the best the series has ever delivered. Add to that a solid Horde mode and an enjoyable multiplayer component, and what you have is a solid, enjoyable, yet unambitious third person shooter.

#5. GEARS TACTICS

The Coalition and Splash Damage teamed up for this one, and ended up delivering a much better game than any of us had expected it would be. A series like Gears of War, which is so reliance on team-based tactical shootouts against the backdrop of cover-based mechanics, does make a lot of sense as an XCOM-style turn-based tactics title, and Gears Tactics proved that the idea can be just as good in practice as it is on paper. Gears Tactics is addictive, mechanically deep and dense, and consistently enjoyable, with great progression, engaging strategy gameplay, and excellent customization mechanics. Sure, it can get a little repetitive in terms of its side quests, and the story isn’t the most perfectly paced, but this is an excellent turn-based tactics debut for the series, and we’re hoping it’s the first of many of its kind.

#4. GEARS OF WAR

The one that started it all, and immediately went down in history as one of the most revolutionary and influential games ever made. Cover-based third person shooting has become such a widespread staple that it’s hard to even think of it as a special mechanic anymore, but it was Gears of War that pioneered and revolutionized that excellent gameplay mechanic and built a spectacular shooter around it. And there was so much else that helped the game standout, from the iconic chainsaw Lancer and the brutal executions to something like the active reload mechanic, which, too, is something that games of all kinds have been aping since 2006. All of that combined with the introduction of memorable (and eventually iconic) characters and the establishment of a legendary franchise ensured that Gears of War would always be remembered as an all-time great.

#3. GEARS OF WAR 2

Following up on a revolutionary, genre-defining game such as the original Gears of War is no easy task, but Epic Games did it with great aplomb, confidently delivering one of the best third person shooters you’ll ever play. It was really the perfect sequel in every way possible. On the multiplayer front, this was when the series truly came into its own, thanks to wide-ranging and robust offerings that players could sink dozens upon dozens of hours into. Most notable was the introduction of Horde mode, which would go on to take the industry by storm and is being aped by games to this do, to the point that it’s basically become a trope. Meanwhile, the campaign was excellent as well, delivering memorable set pieces and surprisingly emotional narrative developments in one expertly paced package. With Gears of War 2, Epic Games took the winning formula of the first game and improved upon it to cement the series’ legacy forever.

#2. GEARS 5

After playing things safe with Gears of War 4 and showing to the world that they were capable of making a perfectly serviceable classic Gears of War experience, The Coalition decided that with Gears 5, it was time to get more ambitious- and we’re glad they did, because they ended up delivering one of the series’ best games in years. The campaign is right up there with the likes of Gears 2 and 3 in terms of quality, thanks to excellent pacing and a nice mix of tightly designed shootouts and more open ended areas. The addition of light stealth mechanics and Jack as a companion add a whole new layer of strategy and progression to the experience as well, making the experience that much more engaging. Meanwhile, with the trifecta of Horde, Escape, and Versus, Gears 5 also offers the deepest, most varied, and most robust multiplayer component of any Gears of War game till date, and better yet, it’s only kept on improving as time as gone on. Add to that the excellent single player campaign expansion of Hivebusters, which might just be the best single player Gears of War content ever produced by The Coalition, and the game becomes that much more of an irresistible package.

#1. GEARS OF WAR 3

By the time Gears of War 3 rolled around, the series was firing on all cylinders. Knowing that they were capping off the entire trilogy, Epic Games took this opportunity to build on all the strengths of the first two games, and ended up delivering the most confident, refined, and full-featured Gears of War game at the time. The campaign was a rollercoaster from start to finish, excellently tying off the trilogy’s story with a great mix of high-octane adrenaline-fueled action and high-stakes and emotional character-driven moments. The multiplayer was brimming with content, with excellent maps, characters, and weapons to sink your teeth into, while the Horde mode was perfected even further, especially with the introduction of Beast mode, which was, in essence, a reversal of Horde itself. It was, in every way possible, the zenith of the Gears of War formula, and an appropriately excellent way for Epic Games to sign off from the franchise.

Just when you think the story is over, these 13 post-credits stingers emerged to shock us and maybe even set up the next chapter.

A video game ending serves as a capstone to the entire experience but it’s not necessarily the last word. For decades, there have been post-credits scenes that either tease a continuation, provide an extra bit of intrigue to the story or offer up some shock value. Let’s take a look at the most shocking examples here. Spoilers abound so be warned.

Mass Effect 3

Amid all the controversy that Mass Effect 3’s endings caused, fans still wondered: Had Shepard survived or not? If you had a high enough Effective Military Strength in Extended Cut and went with the Destroy option, then the Earth would be saved, the Reapers eradicated and your squadmates would survive. Just when Shepard’s fate is sealed, a post-credits scene shows an N7 tag amidst some rubble. It slightly moves, hinting at the Commander’s survival.

Of the many years with big game releases, 2008 is arguably one of the most memorable. Let's take a look back on its most important titles.

It’s always nice to look back on the console generations gone by and marvel at the number of high profile releases each year. This is especially so when looking at 2008 which had excellent follow-ups in established franchises and awesome new IPs. Let’s examine 15 of the best games that year along with what made them so great.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Super Smash Bros. Melee served as the series’ watershed moment, providing a near-perfect combination of gameplay, graphics and music. Super Smash Bros. Brawl didn’t win over everyone with some of its changes (hello, tripping) but it was superior in a number of other aspects. Subspace Emissary is an incredible story-driven mode till this day; the base roster was large and grew even further with the addition of non-Nintendo characters like Solid Snake, Sonic the Hedgehog and Cloud Strife; and the Stage Builder was introduced for creating one’s own levels. The Nintendo Wii already had a number of great exclusives but Super Smash Bros. Brawl is definitely one of its finest.

While Xbox Game Pass has been praised for providing a wide selection of titles for both PC and Xbox subscribers, it also supports Android gaming via the cloud. This allows for playing big-name games on tablets and phones. But what if you wanted to turn your phone into a retro gaming device? Microsoft has you covered.

On Xbox Wire, the company announced that Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers could now play 16 Xbox and Xbox 360 titles on Android phones and tablets via backwards compatible. Check out all of the games below with some having touch controls enabled.

Banjo-Kazooie

Banjo-Tooie

Double Dragon Neon

Fable 2

Fallout: New Vegas

Gears of War 2

Gears of War 3

Gears of War: Judgment

Jetpac Refuelled (touch controls enabled)

Kameo

Perfect Dark

Perfect Dark Zero

The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind

The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion

Viva Piñata (touch controls enabled)

Viva Piñata: Trouble in Paradise (touch controls enabled)

More games will be “coming soon” to the service, expanding on the retro functionality even more. Xbox Game Pass continues to grow with more games added each month. Even big new releases like People Can Fly’s Outriders are joining the service at launch. What the future holds for retro games remains to be seen but being able to take some of them on the go is a nice bonus.

From alien berserkers to... more alien berserkers.

Over the last couple of weeks, we’ve done these features for Nintendo and Sony exclusive games. Doing one for Xbox is a lot harder, owing simply to the fact that Xbox doesn’t have as rich of a history with boss fights as the other two platforms do. But that doesn’t mean there haven’t been any highlights at all- and in this feature, we’ll be talking about some of our favourite boss fights in Xbox-exclusive games over the years.

NOTE: There are spoilers ahead for all games mentioned in this feature. If you see us talking about a game you don’t want spoiled, skip ahead to the next entry.

BERSERKER MATRIARCH (GEARS 5)

The boss fight against the Berserker Matriarch in Gears 5 was probably one of the best moments in the entire game. A perfect blend of challenge and tight design, the fight saw players having to take on a rampaging beast as it charged at you with stunning ferocity. Navigating around her and attacking her weak point was infamously gruelling, but the hook of dunking her in the ice cold water beneath her feat added a nice little twist to the encounter.

Being eaten alive sucks but it's certainly a living for these foes.

Of the many ways, getting eaten or swallowed alive is probably one of the worst (not that we’d know). Unfortunately, there are plenty of enemies in video games that can pull this off. While many interesting gameplay dynamics open up, such as fighting your way out from the inside or trying to avoid being eaten, other times it’s just one agonizing death on top of the rest. Let’s take a look at 15 video game enemies with mouths so big they can literally swallow you.

Choking Weed – Gradius 3

It’s bad enough that you have to shoot past a weed-infested level with killer plants extending from the floor and ceiling to hit you. But then you come across Choking Weed, whose Venus Flytrap-style mouth opens up to actually suck you in. Fortunately, the rate at which its jaws close is slow enough to evade. Just be careful when it suddenly decides to dip forward.

There’s no boss too big for us to take down in video games, even if that means having to literally go inside them and wreck their innards for the victory.
