Tons of worlds have been created over the past few years - here are the very best so far.

Open world games are a popular genre and for good reason. They offer tons of things to do and let players get lost, just experimenting with this wide open sandbox. While there have been tons of incredible open world games over the years, this generation of gaming has undoubtedly offered the best. Let’s take a look at 30 of the best open world games of the generation here, ranked from good to the very best. Starting with number 30…

Mad Max

Veering away from massive open world destruction into post-apocalyptic, vehicular exploration, Mad Max was an odd turn for Avalanche Studios. It was about upgrading your car, the Magnum Opus, and taking on convoys. It was about assaulting bases and brawling with baddies. There were the unoriginal side quests, sure, but the sheer expanse of its rolling dunes and spectacle of the vehicle combat helped Mad Max stand out.

The digital charts tells a very different story than the physical one.

Total War: Three Kingdoms has been a huge success for Sega and Creative Assembly, from both a sales and critical reception point of view. In fact, it may even have been bigger than originally thought. We got a look at the first ever weekly digital chart sales for the UK, and it paints a much different picture than its physical counterpoint– and Total War rules the roost.

GamesIndustry got a look at the first weekly digital UK chart, the GSD, and it puts Total War: Three Kingdoms on top, with Grand Theft Auto V in number 2. It’s a startlingly different picture than the physical sales chart. For instance, number 1 there at debut, Team Sonic Racing, didn’t even crack the top 10. According to GamesIndustry, it was number 13. It’s worth noting that the chart did not include statistics from Nintendo (along with Bethesda and Konami opting out), and that could help explain the huge disconnect without the Switch version.

Still, it is quite a difference between the two lists, but it just goes to show there’s still a pretty big difference between how people purchase games physically and digitally, and that discounts can play a big impact in digital charts, as seen by the presence of Cities: Skylines, Uno, and Monopoly Plus.

You can see the top ten for the week ending May 26th below.

Total War: Three Kingdoms

Grand Theft Auto V

Monopoly Plus

Minecraft

FIFA 19

Cities:Skylines

Red Dead Redemption 2

Uno

F1 2018

Middle-Earth: Shadow of War

The truth is out there, these games are all in the same universe!

Since the dawn of recorded history, when The Jetsons met The Flintstones, crossovers have been some of the most celebrated events in media as a whole. Gaming is of course no exception to that rule, with some very beloved titles revolving completely around the idea such as Marvel VS Capcom and of course, Super Smash Bros. But, if we wanted to take this to the logical extreme and consider any crossover as totally cannon, how ridiculous could we get? We went into the rabbit hole to find out.

The main rules to keep in mind for this list are that we deliberately avoided major crossover titles like Smash, PlayStation All Stars and MvC because then it would be no fun, and that really, that fun, is what this is all about, so you probably shouldn’t take it any more seriously than we are, which is not at all.

We begin our journey in the inconspicuous little golf game, Everybody’s Golf 5, perhaps better known in North America as Hot Shots Golf: Out of Bounds on PS3 takes us for a relaxing day on the links. As it turns out, even patricidal Greeks get a bit of downtime now and then. Kratos, the Ghost of Sparta, was introduced to the game in 2008 as a playable DLC character, where he could channel his unquenchable rage into something a bit more productive, using a rather unique chain club. Since this was before 3, I guess he chilled out between his latest PS4 game by taking up pottery instead?

These games are so well balanced that adding a difficulty setting may very well spoil the experience.

You run home on the launch day of a brand new game, thrilled that the launch has finally come. Pop the disk into your system and settle in for a nice long session. But before any of that, there’s a lot of the time you have a choice to make. What’s your difficulty setting? While somewhat accepted today, the very idea of the player selecting their own difficulty is kind of strange, isn’t it? Before playing even a little bit of the game, you’re asking the player to make a major decision that could impact their entire experience. The problems with difficulty modes are numerous, but there’s a growing number of titles who have found creative ways around this, which we’re here to discuss today. Make sure to share your favourites in the comments below!

Super Meat Boy

As an early indy hit, Super Meat Boy had to earn all of the praise it got to show that smaller teams could be worth just as much attention. Super Meat Boy then had a lot of confidence in the mechanics surrounding the super tight platforming gameplay to not offer players a way to just cruise to the credits. Losing the idea of lives lives and allowing the player to restart the small stages roughly 12 times per second until the proverbial brick wall was beaten down allowed many to find their groove and not really even notice death.

None of these entries are the people you want to come across in a dark alley.

Have we ever told you the definition of insanity? The human mind is built around patterns and being able to recognize what might be coming up, but when we come up against someone who doesn’t play by those rules? After all, in video games there is no sanity clause! Heroes, villains and anything in between, this is a list dedicated to those who chose to use that emergency exit that in insanity, take refuge in psychopathy and bask in their sweet release. We probably missed some really great crazies on this list, so please share your favourites in the comments below.

Note: The views expressed in this article are those of the author and do not necessarily represent the views of, and should not be attributed to GamingBolt as an organization.

Trevor – Grand Theft Auto V

While later entries on this list might make him seem like a teletubby, Trevor from GTAV is still quite a reprehensible person. A product of circumstances and environment that make Trevor the sociopath he is becomes a huge part of the commentary of the game, and make Trevor one of the more sympathetic examples here, even if we still wouldn’t have him over for dinner.

Grand Theft Auto has been one of the major players in games media for years, at least since GTAIII in 2001 brought the series to 3D and into the mainstream attention. It’s now estimated by Marketwatch that the originally released in 2013 Grand Theft Auto V has sold 90 Million units and raked in roughly $6 Billion dollars worth of revenue for Rockstar.

While some of the data cited by Marketwatch is suspect, such as the platform breakdown which uses VGChartz as a source, the rest of the data comes from more solid sources and can likely be taken at face value. What does this mean? Well this means that not only has GTAV vastly outsold the closest competition in gaming, but that GTAV is the single most profitable piece of entertainment ever created.

The highest grossing movie of all time, Avatar comes up pretty far short of Rockstar’s opus with a pride shrinking $2.8 Billion dollars. Grand Theft Auto V has also seen stock in the company rise nearly 1000% since release. While Rockstar swims in their money vaults, let us know if you’re still playing GTAV in the comments.

There’s nothing like that moment when a video game does something that just makes you stop, put your controller down, and marvel at what you’ve just witnessed. How a game does that, of course, can vary depending on what game you’re playing. It can be anything from a major twist or an incredible boss fight to something visually gorgeous or an ingenious piece of game design that makes you do a double take.

Here are fourteen moments from the last decade when a video game had that sort of an impact on us. If you agree or disagree with any of our choices, sound off in the comments section below.

UNCHARTED 2: AMONG THIEVES- THE TRAIN SET PIECE

The train set piece from Uncharted 2 is a thing of legends at this point, much like the rest of the game itself. With Uncharted 2, Naughty Dog showed the world that blockbuster action sequences can be done as well as they can in movies, if not better, and that they don’t just have to be lengthy, flashy cutscenes. The train section from Uncharted 2 combined everything that the game was so good at. Platforming, combat, heart-pumping action and flashy cutscenes all came together into a single, seamless sequence, that was made even better by the fact that it was all completely interactive. The Uncharted series has been trying to one-up the train set piece ever since, with the plane crash in Uncharted 3 and the intense jeep chase in Uncharted 4, and while there’s nothing but good things to be said about both of those, the train remains, to this day, the undisputed king.

The game that just won't stop.

UPDATE: Added source link to ZHugeEX.

Original story continues:

We already knew that Grand Theft Auto 5 was a gargantuan success- after all, it is the highest selling game of all time, with over 50 million units sold worldwide. GTA Online continues to generate a steady source of revenue for Rockstar and their parent company Take-Two as well. But what we didn’t know was just how much ancillary revenue the game has managed to generate.

Take Two have revealed that sales of Grand Theft Auto products since July 1st 2013 through September 30th 2015 have accounted for approximately $2.3 billion in revenue, reports ZHugeEX. Now of course, the majority of these numbers come directly from GTA 5 and GTA: Online. But other GTA products that have launched since, such as re-releases of older games on other platforms, and merchandize, have also been generating a fair amount of that money.

That is seriously insane. Grand Theft Auto 5 is a great game, too, so it’s nice to see the masses agree to the critical consensus for once. Now be nice, Rockstar, and give us some good single player story DLC for the game.
