The legendary Streets of Rage series is scheduled to come back sometime this year with Streets of Rage 4. The old school beat’em up will come with its stylish, retro graphics and plenty of that classic sidescrolling action. While the game up until now has been a digital-only affair, it seems for select platforms you’ll be able to get a physical copy for your shelf, too.

As announced on their official Twitter page, Streets of Rage 4 will get a physical release. While the game is slated to come to a variety of different platforms, this release will only come to the PS4 and Switch version. It will include both a standard release, as well as a “Classic Edition,” which will also have a steelbook and a Genesis shaped clamshell it place it in.

The pre-orders will start on March 20th and will run until one week after the digital release (it’s unclear how much longer after the digital launch this will release). While this will only be available for the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch versions of the title, it will also come to Xbox One and PC sometime later this year.

The beloved character will be playable in the upcoming sequel.

Nintendo’s recent Indie World presentation was packed full of updates and new game announcements, but one of the most prominent games to be shown off during the show was one we already know about- Streets of Rage 4. Happily, it was also a showing that will have warmed the hearts of every fan of the series.

That’s because beloved character Adam Hunter will be returning as a playable character in Streets of Rage 4. This will be the first time since the first game that he will be playable- though he appeared in Streets of Rage 2 and 3, he was a non-playable character. The video announcing his return also showed him in action, of course, and as you’d expect, the game is continuing to look slick.

It’s an unexpected announcement, and one that shows that the developers are going all out as they revive the classic brawler series, and fans will no doubt be ecstatic about Hunter’s return. Take a look at him in action in Streets of Rage 4 below.

Streets of Rage 4 is out for the PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC in 2020.

The beat 'em up classic finally receives a sequel with animation from Lizardcube.

Guard Crush, Lizardcube (Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap) and DotEmu (Windjammers 2) have announced that the classic beat ’em up franchise Streets of Rage will be receiving a sequel. Check out the animated trailer for Streets of Rage 4 below, which sees the return of Axel and Blaze.

Featuring both co-op and solo gameplay, Streets of Rage 4 features many of the same tropes as the original games. You’ll beat up street punks, chow down on chickens to restore your health, and travel through a series of stages. The visuals are hand-drawn, courtesy of Lizardcube, and there are new mechanics and stages to experience.

The last time we saw Sega’s franchise was with Streets of Rage 3 on the Sega Genesis in 1994. It was later ported to platforms like Nintendo Wii, GameCube, PlayStation 2, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. Streets of Rage 4 doesn’t have a release date and its platforms are still to be announced. Nevertheless, it’s hard not to be hyped for the return of a beat ’em up founding father.
