Casey Bloys said it "certainly seemed" that way, but "On decisions like that, we will defer to the showrunners. So you can ask them."

The Last of Us might be wrapping up its highly successful television run, with its upcoming season potentially bringing an end to the live-action adaptation of Naughty Dog’s hit action-adventure survival franchise. In a recent interview with Deadline, Casey Bloys, who serves as the Chairman and CEO of HBO and HBO Max Content, hinted at the popular adaptation of Joel and Ellie’s ill-fated adventures wrapping up its highly successful run.

Upon being asked if the upcoming season was going to be the last one for the series, Bloys hinted that “it certainly seemed that way,” but injected a bit of mystery by passing the buck on to the series’s showrunners. “On decisions like that, we will defer to the showrunners. So you can ask them.”

While the show’s second season focused on the first half of The Last of Us 2’s narrative, the third season will bring Abby to the center stage, focusing on her single-minded efforts to avenge her father.

No spoilers, but those of you who played the game already know how things pan out on that front. As for everyone else, they might be glad to know that you’re close to the curtain call on a live-action adaptation that has largely managed to capture the essence of its video game counterpart. Just don’t expect it to release anytime this year.

HBO and Max content chairman and CEO Casey Bloys also spoke about working with Neil Druckmann before he stepped away as showrunner.

While HBO had confirmed that it had renewed The Last of Us for a third season all the way back in April, the TV channel has still been quite secretive about when it will actually air. In an interview with Variety, HBO and Max content chairman and CEO Casey Bloys has said that the company is aiming for a 2027 premiere for the third season of The Last of Us.

However, Bloys was still coy about offering more specifics about the premiere date for the third season. “The series is definitely planned for 2027,” he said. “Craig [Mazin] is still working it out whether it will be two more seasons or one more long season. It hasn’t been decided yet, and I’m following Craig’s lead on that.”

When asked about his thoughts about Neil Druckmann stepping away as showrunner to focus on Naughty Dog’s Intergalactic, Bloys spoke about enjoying having worked with him. He also brought up the fact that, while Druckmann had to focus his attention on another project, he had left the team with “a good blueprint” for the show.

“Obviously it was great to have Neil involved in the beginning,” said Bloys. “The whole reason that I wanted to do Last of Us is after Chernobyl, I said to Craig, ‘what do you want to do next?’ And Last of Us was what he wanted to do. That’s what was most important to me, Craig’s creative excitement about the show. It was fantastic to have Neil involved.”

“A lot of people don’t realize that Neil has a full time job creating video games and running Naughty Dog. It’s a really big job that he’s got. So I understand why he needs to focus on that. But I believe he’s given us a good blueprint with the show. And obviously Craig is a pro, so I think we’ll be in excellent shape. I’m not worried at all.”

The Last of Us wrapped up its second season a couple of months ago. While the first season saw quite a bit of critical acclaim and popularity, the second season was seemingly not as lucky. According to a report from May, the second season finale drew only roughly half of the viewers of the first season’s finale. In terms of raw numbers, the finale drew in 3.7 million across all platforms, compared to the 8.2 million viewers of the first season finale.

However, when the second season first came out, it was getting more viewers than its predecessors. A report from April indicated that more than 5.3 million viewers had tuned in for the season 2 premiere of The Last of Us across all platforms in the US. Compared to season 1’s premiere, which clocked in at 4.7 million viewers, season 2 saw a roughly 10 percent increase.

The report had also indicated that viewership for the first season of The Last of Us had gone up in the week leading up to the second season premiere by around 150 percent.

Halley Gross, who plays a role in the upcoming sci-fi title, is also stepping back from the show to focus on "what comes next."

With the second season of HBO’s The Last of Us over, Naughty Dog president Neil Druckmann has announced he will be stepping back from the show before “any meaningful work begins” on Season 3. Druckmann will focus on the studio’s next big title, the sci-fi action adventure Intergalactic, which he’s directing and writing.

Of course, he also has responsibilities as studio head and head of creative (besides serving as producer on an unannounced project). Interestingly, Halley Gross, who co-wrote the show with Druckmann and Craig Mazin, has also announced she’s stepping back from “day-to-day work” on the same to focus on “what comes next.”

Gross plays AJ in Intergalactic, an agent who provides work to bounty hunter and protagonist Jordan A. Mun. However, the part about working on “some truly rad projects ahead” seemingly hints at other titles in the works. Stay tuned for more updates in the meantime.

Intergalactic is currently in development for PS5. Sony has confirmed that it will launch after March 2026, but rumors indicate it won’t arrive anytime next year.

Season 2 of HBO's adaptation drew in 3.7 million cross-platform viewers with its finale, down 55 percent from the Season 1 finale's 8.2 million viewers.

The Last of Us Season 2’s seventh and final episode premiered on HBO Max (or whatever it’s being called right now) on Sunday, drawing mixed reception from critics and audiences. That mixed reception is apparently being reflected in the show’s viewership numbers as well.

Reported by Variety, The Last of Us Season 2’s recent finale drew in 3.7 million viewers across all platforms. That’s down 55 percent from the 8.2 million viewers the show had with its Season 1 finale in 2023. In comparison, the second season’s premiere in April saw 5.3 million day one viewers, which was a 10 percent increase on the season one finale.

The Last of Us is already confirmed to be returning, with a third season already having been officially greenlit. The show will continue to adapt the story of 2020’s The Last of Us Part 2, though when it is targeting a release is currently unknown.

The seventh and final episode of The Last of Us' second season is going to premier on HBO Max next Sunday, May 25.

The penultimate episode of the second season of HBO’s The Last of Us adaptation premiered on Sunday, which means the countdown is now of course on for the season finale in less than a week’s time. To continue building the hype for the finale, HBO has released a teaser trailer for it.

After pausing and taking a break from Ellie’s ongoing vengeful rampage through Seattle to do a flashback episode focusing on Joel once again, The Last of Us is set to return to the story at hand for its season finale. Things, it seems, will continue to get intense for Ellie, Dina, and Jesse, while the war between the Wolves and Seraphites also escalates. Check out the teaser trailer below for a glimpse of what the season finale will have in store.

Before Season 2 premiered a little over a month ago, HBO announced that it had officially greenlit a third season of The Last of Us, which will continue to cover the story of The Last of Us Part 2.

A new teaser offers glimpses of what's in store for the HBO series' next episode, after a game-changing episode 2.

The second episode of HBO’s The Last of Us premiered on Sunday, and suffice it to say, it was one that we won’t be forgetting about anytime soon- which, incidentally, is the most that can be said about it without veering into spoiler territory, for those who haven’t yet seen it. For those who are caught up, however, HBO has released a brief new trailer that offers a look at what next week’s episode will have in store.

Plenty went down in Jackson in episode 2, to say the very least, and pretty much all of the major players of the story will be reeling with the aftermath, as pieces also begin moving into place for the story’s next phase. Check out the teaser below for a glimpse of what that’ll bring.

The Last of Us Season 2’s third episode will premiere next Sunday, April 27, after which, the season will have four episodes remaining in the pipeline.

That's up on Season 1's premiere by 10 percent. The episode would go on to see over 32 million total US viewers.

Excitement was high for The Last of Us’ Season 2 HBO premiere on Sunday, so it should come as no major surprise that it enjoyed quite the viewership numbers on its first day.

As reported by Deadline, on Sunday, episode 1 of The Last of Us’ second season had over 5.3 million viewers in the US across all platforms that the show streamed on. That’s up from the Season 1 premiere in 2023 – which drew 4.7 million US viewers on day one – by 10 percent. The latter went on to amass over 32 million total viewers, so it should be interesting to see how Season 2’s debut fares.

Interestingly, Deadline also reports that viewership for Season 1 also increased by 150 percent in the week leading up to Season 2’s premiere.

The Last of Us Season 2 has six more episodes left, with the next coming on April 20. Check out a new trailer for the upcoming episodes through here. HBO has also officially greenlit a third season.

The second season of HBO's The Last of Us premiered on Sunday, and has six more episodes planned for the coming weeks.

Season 2 of HBO’s The Last of Us adaptation kicked off on Sunday with the long-awaited premiere, and for the next month and a half, new episodes will air weekly. Though Season 2 is not expected to cover the entirety of The Last of Us Part 2, it’s still looking to be a packed batch of episodes, and HBO has released a new trailer to offer a glimpse at what the weeks ahead will bring.

From tense encounters with different types of Infected and personal drama between Ellie, Joel, and others to explosive conflict between the WLF and the Seraphites in Seattle and more, plenty is coming up that fans of the source material will be familiar with. As the season’s first episode indicated, however, the show will seemingly continue to expand on The Last of Us Part 2’scontent with its own additions. Check out the trailer below.

Season 2 of The Last of Us has six more episodes left in its ongoing second season, with the next set to premiere on April 20. A third season has also already been officially greenlit.

Season 2 of HBO’s The Last of Us hasn’t kicked off yet, but clearly, the network has plenty of confidence in how it’s going to do, because a third season has already been officially greenlit.

HBO announced the news via the official Max Twitter account, accompanying it with a brief teaser that shows… nothing. Given that Season 2 itself hasn’t even premiered its first episode yet, that much, at least, is understandable.

Season 2 of The Last of Us premieres this Sunday, on April 13. In addition to bringing back Pedro Pascal as Joel, Bella Ramsey as Ellie, and Gabriel Luna as Tommy, the new season is also introducing several new key characters in the form of Kaitlyn Dever’s Abby, Isabela Merced’s Dina, Young Mazino’s Jesse, and others.

Season 2 will consist of seven episodes, and will cover only part of The Last of Us Part 2– which means we can expect the show to continue to focus on the 2020 game in its third season.

A growing rift between Joel and Ellie, explosive action with the Infected, new characters, spores, and more shown.

HBO’s adaptation of The Last of Us is returning soon with a second season, which will partially adapt Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us Part 2. That, of course, means that the upcoming set of episodes will cover some pretty gruesome and traumatic events, as the 2020 masterpiece’s fans will tell you- and the newest trailer for the show offers glimpses of many of those scenes.

We’ll leave those unspoiled for those who’re heading into uncharted territory with Season 2, but there’s plenty of note to talk about nonetheless. In addition to showing the likes of Joel (Pedro Pascal), Ellie (Bella Ramsey), Abby (Kaitlyn Dever), Tommy (Gabriel Luna), Isaac (Jeffrey Wright(, and others, it also showcases a significantly larger number of Infected.

New factions and locations that fans of the game will find familiar are also shown, while one shot also seems to suggest that spores, which were absent in Season 1, will be making their introduction in Season 2. Check out the trailer below.

The Last of Us Season 2 will premiere on April 13. The season will consist of seven episodes.
