Hair physics can be a tough nut to crack, but these 15 games do a great job of simulating hair and its movements in a realistic fashion.

Hair is one of the toughest body parts to render in any digital medium like animated movies and video games. Hair isn’t a simple texture, but rather an amalgamation of thousands upon thousands of fine strands grouped very closely – and emulating this in a realistic fashion at real-time frame rates can consume exorbitant amounts of computing resources. What’s even more tricky is simulating the movement of these strands, which requires complex physics implementation of its own. Many games fail to hit the mark when it comes to hair physics, but some games do a wonderful job in this regard and this feature will run down 15 such examples

Horizon Forbidden West

Guerrilla Games delivered an excellent sequel with Horizon Forbidden West, a game that corrected almost every criticism with the original all while greatly expanding upon the scope of the original release. Horizon Forbidden West is also a visual powerhouse that presents its gargantuan world with striking attention to detail, and one of the more impressive aspects of that presentation is definitely Aloy’s hair. Sporting dense braided locks, Aloy’s character model has full hair physics for each of these locks that swirl and twirl with each movement. Sure, they are prone to glitching out every now and then which results in some hilarious moments – but by and large, the hair looks and functions in a pretty realistic fashion.

Video game stories often have epic battles on a massive scale. Here are 15 such conflicts that stand out in unique ways.

Epic battles in video games can be hard to pull off. It’s not just about scale (though that certainly helps), but also the circumstances leading up to it that give them weight. So whether it’s a single person annihilating hordes of enemies and shifting the tides of war, or a desperate battle for survival, let’s look at 15 of the most epic large-scale battles of all time. Spoilers follow, so be warned.

Battle for Helm’s Deep – The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers

One of the most important battles in The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, the Battle for Helm’s Deep is arguably the best in the films. Despite running on sixth-gen console hardware, the video game adaptation captured the desperation of fighting hordes of Uruk Hai, pushing ladders off the keep’s walls, and meeting them at the breached wall to stop their advance. The fight spills over into the courtyard, with a somewhat awkward but cinematic view.

After shining on the PS3, these titles deserve to be on PS5.

There’s been quite a lot of talk about backwards compatibility and remasters for the PS5. And while there are plenty of PS4 titles that could benefit from improved visuals and DualSense functionality, several PS3 titles deserve to be brought into the new generation as well. Let’s take a look at 15 PS3 titles that need to be remastered for the PS5.

Killzone 2

While Guerrilla Games has become well-known for the Horizon series, remastering Killzone 2 for the PS5 seems a given. It’s the game that put the company on the map and its excellent visual fidelity, attention to detail, fun gun play and solid multiplayer would make a smooth transition over to the console. If a new sequel on PS5 isn’t coming any time soon, then it makes sense to revisit Killzone 2 in some capacity.

Noriko will sadly only be heading to home video.

While Ratchet and Clank will be heading to the big screen, it seems that another Sony property is currently being given the feature film treatment. Heavenly Sword, property of Sony Computer Entertainment but with the first game being developed by Ninja Theory (of DmC: Devil May Cry fame/controversy) is also getting a CG movie.

This comes from Variety, with the report stating that Blockade Entertainment will also be handling production. However, it won’t be heading to the big screen as apparently only a direct-to-home video release is planned.

While Heavenly Sword didn’t exactly set the world on fire when it was first released in 2007, it did impress with its great graphics and stellar animation, not to mention the absolute beauty of Noriko’s fighting moves.

Shame more people won’t be able to see her busting baddies on the silver screen, but given the dismal success of the series, it’s probably for the best.

According to Gameinformer:

“Loose Talk has learned that Enslaved isn’t the only game Ninja Theory is working on-we’ve heard that the Cambridge, England developer is being tapped for the next Devil May Cry.

It is not totally unexpected, however; Capcom has said that although it is shying away from Western developer for new IP, it would continue to utilize them for known franchises, which DMC certainly is.”

If this is true, i think Ninja Theory can do a good job with Devil May Cry 5 (or what ever its gonna be called), they have done a tremendous job with Heavenly Sword for the PS3.

2009 and 2010 is when all the 3D buzz started, with movie releases like Avatar, and new 3D TV’s by companies like Sony, which also announced that the Playstation 3 will support 3D with games like Gran Turismo 5.

But now the co-founder of Ninja Theory Tameem Antoniades states that in this generation of consoles, 3D will be limited, and here is why:

“The problem is that to do 3D properly you need to render 60 frames per second, per eye. And at least a 720p resolution [per eye], so in essence that’s 1080p rendering at 120 frames per second, and the current generation can only process very rudimentary graphics at that spec.” He said

“I think the technology’s limited now, so you won’t be able to play stuff that looks like Avatar – the movie – in 3D, every generation has to be at least five-to-ten times more powerful than the last, so I think we’ll get there in the next generation. I think that will be totally revolutionary for games.” he added

So what are your thoughts? me personally, i pretty much agree with him, i don’t expect big things from 3D this year or the next, but i guess only time will tell.
