Citing unfavorable conditions in the mobile market.

Square Enix Montreal brought a lot of their properties to mobiles in a big way, with Deus Ex GO, Tomb Raider GO, and Hitman GO adapting those IP for mobiles as great puzzle games that simultaneously managed to stay true to the spirit of the franchise. Sadly, however, it seems like there won’t be any more of these games made going forward.

Speaking to PC Games Insider (via Pocket Gamer), studio head Patrick Naud noted that the mobile market is not favorable for paid games and apps- and that that has caused Square Enix Montreal to reassess continued work on the series.

“I have to say no [we’re not working on other Go games], I’m sorry,” Naud said. “The Go series was a great adventure for us as a studio. We’ve done the three games, we’ve seen the wind. The hardest element is making premium games on mobile.

“It’s one of the challenges we have today is the premium mobile market is diminishing. You’ve got more and more high-quality free titles so there are even fewer and fewer people inclined to try something that will not be free.

“Despite the critical success and the great revenue we’ve had, it’s sad to see that our games are only played by a small slither of the population because of the price point. That’s such a big barrier for mobile users. A lot of people consume mobile games only and they have all these options, all these games; why should they invest money in this one unless they’re very convinced?

“That doesn’t mean they won’t spend in-game, but they want to spend on a game that they’re sure they’re going to like. The perception of choice makes it that even if it’s only $5, that’s too much.”

It’s a shame that it has come to this, but it is hard to deny the truth of his words- the mobile market does not value games. It won’t spend money on a game, not even as much as it would on a coffee- why should it, when there are countless free alternatives? Unfortunately, this also means that high quality premium mobile games, like the GO games, suffer as a result.

It’s a shame- but if you have yet to check these titles out, I do encourage you to pick up your phone and purchase them. They’re worth the money, and they are very, very, very good.

Android version to be updated later.

Square Enix has revealed that its mobile version of the Hitman series, Hitman GO, has been recently updated with some new content. The Airport Box, as it’s called, has released for iOS devices first and can be downloaded from the App Store today. The Android version will be seeing the update a little bit later, however.

The Airport Box adds 15 news levels, some new gameplay mechanics, Civilian Mode, the ability to move on walkways and skip turns, and of course some new enemies to tussle with. Each level can be unlocked by playing normally. If you want access to them all at once, you’ll need to make a small purchase of 69p/99c/€0.99. This brings the game’s total level count to 83 levels, which is a significant amount of content for this price.

Meanwhile, the team at IO Interactive is busy working on the next iteration of Hitman for Xbox One, PS4 and PC which will return to the sandbox style of the earlier games. Stay tuned for more information.

That's another Hitman mobile game.

After the apparent success of Hitman: GO, the strategy game starring everyone’s favorite bald assassin that released to mobile devices a little over a month ago, Square Enix have announced that yet another mobile game in the Hitman series will be hitting iOS devices: Hitman: Sniper is a free to play title with over 100 missions full of creative opportunities to manipulate the environment, guards, and targets to complete the hits. It is also designed to deliver a game experience that is built from the ground up for touch screen devices and takes full advantage of the possibilities offered by the platform and will contain leaderboard driven challenges for players to compete against their friends.

Hitman: Sniper is being billed as a competitive sniping game (which makes it even sadder that it is being wasted on touch screen devices), and it will be unveiled fully at E3 next week. It also appears that this was the Hitman game that Square Enix was hinting we may see more of before E3 a few weeks ago.

Hitman: Sniper (alongside Hitman: GO) represents Square Enix’s willingness to experiment with putting flagship installments in their big franchises on mobile devices, if nothing else- after Final Fantasy and Deus Ex underwent the same treatment, Hitman is being subjected to it now (although it is to be presumed that Hitman: GO was a lot more successful than any Final Fantasy or Deus Ex mobile game, because it is already getting a second follow up).

Square Enix bringing another one of its brands over to mobiles.

After Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, The World Ends With You, and Deus Ex successfully crossed over, Square Enix will be bringing another big brand under their control, in this case Hitman, to mobile devices. Hitman Go is a simple, deep puzzle game, with 68 levels. And apart from the name, this style turn-based puzzle game might as well not be Hitman, really.

‘We wanted to make something unexpected. Something that crystalizes everything “Hitman” in the simplest way possible, while retaining the high class, cool attitude the famous assassin is known for’ said Karsten Lund, Creative Director for Square Enix Montreal. ‘Essentially Hitman is about being behind enemy lines. You have to consider your every move in order to solve the puzzles. It’s about being undercover, smart and stealthy.

‘We boiled most of the core Hitman mechanics such as disguises, distractions and different weapons, down to the simplest possible game, without losing the fun and tension of its AAA counterpart. The game is set on beautiful diorama like set pieces that makes it feel fresh and cool, and encompasses what we call essence of assassination. Hitman GO releases globally today for iOS devices and will hit the Play Store for Android users very soon.’

It might still be a fun game, actually, but as it stands right now, the idea does sound a bit odd. Check out the launch trailer for the game, and tell us what you think.
