Hazelight Studios continues to go from strength to strength with its current line-up, but also "can't wait" to show off its next game.

Hazelight Studios is hard at work on its next co-op title, which could have three playable characters instead of the usual two, but its back-catalogue continues to perform well. Prison break adventure A Way Out has sold 13 million copies, while It Takes Two reached 30 million sales. Its most recent hit, Split Fiction, is at seven million sales, a noticeable increase from the four million sold as of May 2025.

All in all, that’s 50 million total sales in a little over eight years. Not bad for a studio that’s focused exclusively on narrative-driven co-op titles with reasonable price points and Friend’s Passes. And while it remains secretive, Hazelight Studios said it “can’t wait to show you our fourth game…”

The theory that it potentially features three characters comes from an image of actors in mo-cap suits, waving to the camera, while director Josef Fares hides their faces. Ever the ambitious individual, he promised that the studio’s next title would be even better than Split Fiction. If you’ll remember, he said the same for the latter compared to It Takes Two (and pretty much met those expectations).

In the meantime, check out our review for Split Fiction. It’s available for PS5, PC, Nintendo Switch 2, and Xbox Series X/S.

Assassin's Creed Shadows has beaten out other 2025 releases like Monster Hunter Wilds and Mario Kart World in European sales.

While 2025 has been a great year for video games thanks to numerous releases and even a new console so far, it looks like Assassin’s Creed Shadows is leading the charts in Europe when it comes to sales for games released this year. According to a report by The Game Business, Ubisoft’s open-world title has beaten out games like Split Fiction, Monster Hunter Wilds, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, and Mario Kart World to lead the charts for 2025 releases.

According to the report, there have been a total of 71 million games sold in 2025 across PC and consoles in Europe, which marks a 6 percent drop over the same period from 2024. This data accounts for sales having taken place up to July 28. Of the 71 million game sales, 52 million were digital copies, while 19.7 million were physical copies. These are 3 percent and 9 percent reductions over the previous year, and around 74 percent of games sold this year in Europe have been digital, which, when it comes to percentages, is a 2 percent rise from 2024.

The best-selling game in Europe in 2025 has been EA Sports FC 25. The title was released back in 2024, and taking it into account, Assassin’s Creed Shadows currently sits in the number 2 spot for game sales overall in Europe across PC and consoles. The top 20 sales chart, which you can check out below, also include other games released this year, including The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered, Elden Ring: Nightreign, and Nintendo Switch 2 launch title Mario Kart World. It is worth noting that digital sales data for Nintendo games hasn’t been revealed.

The data, coming from official European charts company GSD, also interestingly omits Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. It was noted as being missing because publisher Kepler Interactive hasn’t shared sales data for the game with GSD. An analyst from GSD, Sam Naji, also revealed some details about how game spending has changed for PC and consoles over the year.

In his analysis, Naji said that the first 19 weeks of 2025 saw spending drop by 2 percent compared to 2024, down to €1.33 billion, while the number of copies sold dropped by 9 percent. He attributed this to the average price of games having gone up by around 8 percent, with gamers spending an average of €29 per game, when compared to 2024’s average of €27 per game. He also noted that digital spending had gone up by 8 percent compared to a 6 percent drop in number of units sold, attributing it to a 15 percent rise in average price for digital games – €22 to €25 per game.

Hazelight Studios' previous co-op titles continue to enjoy steady sales years on from their respective releases.

Hazelight Studios has just put out its third (and biggest) game in the form of Split Fiction, but the independent developer’s previous titles haven’t slowed down their momentum either.

Speaking recently with Washington Post, Hazelight boss Josef Fares revealed that It Takes Two has now sold over 23 million units worldwide, while the studio’s debut title, 2018’s A Way Out, currently sits at 11 million units sold.

Both games have seen notable bumps from their previously reported figures. It Takes Two had sold 20 million units as of last October, so clearly, the co-op platform enjoyed another bump in sales amidst the hype surrounding Split Fiction. Meanwhile, A Way Out was reported to have hit 9 million units sold last June.

Split Fiction also seems to have enjoyed a flying start. Though EA and Hazelight have yet to announce any official numbers, the game peaked at over 197,000 concurrent players on Steam following launch, more than twice the all-time peak for It Takes Two. Read our review of the newly-released co-op title through here.

When asked in an interview about which of his games he could see himself making a sequel for, the Hazelight Studios boss picked It Takes Two.

Hazelight Studios is currently fully focused on the imminently-releasing Split Fiction, but unsurprisingly, the developer’s acclaimed 2021 title, It Takes Two, still looms large in everyone’s memory. But is there a chance that we could ever see a direct follow-up to the co-op platformer? Hazelight is a team that prides itself on always chasing after new and inventive ideas, after all- but could a sequel to It Takes Two ever be on the cards?

Surprisingly enough, the answer isn’t an unequivocal no. Speaking in a recent interview with MinnMax, when asked about which of his games he would make a sequel to if he had to, Fares picked It Takes Two. As to whether that’s an actual possibility? At the very least, it doesn’t look like it’s an impossibility.

“Who knows, man? You never know the future at Hazelight,” he said.

It Takes Two has sold over 20 million units worldwide since releasing in 2021, so it’s safe to assume that there’s a sizeable audience out there who’ll be happy to return for a sequel. Whether it actually happens is the big question, but the fact that Hazelight and Fares don’t seem instantly opposed to the idea is encouraging for those who do want an… um, It Takes Three?

In the meantime, Split Fiction releases for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on March 6.

These video games do not shy away from macabre moments.

For all their ability to give the experience of enticing stories, engaging gameplay, and immersive world design, video games can also use these factors to shock us. Some of the darkest moments in any form of media are represented in video games, with their interactivity oftentimes making the anguish-able experience much more tangible than if the same thing happened in a movie or TV show. Your opinion on what constitutes dark may differ, of course, but the 15 moments discussed in this rundown are inarguably disturbing: upsetting at one end of the spectrum, downright harrowing at the other. Also, it’s worth pointing out that there’re spoilers for the games featured.

The Bloody Baron – The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Arguably the most morally bankrupt NPC Geralt encounters in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, The Bloody Baron’s history as an abuser to wife Anna and daughter Tamara is revealed during Geralt’s attempts to locate The Baron’s estranged family in exchange for information on his own daughter’s whereabouts. Neither of The Baron’s conclusions are favourable for him (or, indeed, his wife Anna); should both The Baron and Anna survive, Anna will have succumbed to madness whilst a band of witches abscond with the orphans of whom she was residing. Should Anna die, the Baron will tragically hang himself due to a lifetime of grief and guilt.

Do you have a friend, a relative, or someone else you always wanted to play games with on a couch, but can’t decide which one you should dive into? Worry not. Here are our 15 best recommendations for couch co-op gamers.

Once a principal staple of games some twenty plus years ago, the ability to play in local, couch co-op nowadays more often seems a sought-after feature than something to be expected. There’s an unrivalled joy in playing together in the same room as others; something which online multi-player cannot replicate. Couch co-op is still a thing though; whilst some developers add local co-op respectively via updates, some of the best available weave the requirement to work diligently together into the very fabric of the game’s design.

Sony has a long history with action-adventure titles; some of the best created found their homes on PlayStation.

The PS4-era catapulted Sony’s reputation for action-adventure into the stratosphere, and that trend has continued into the PS5. Sure, some of the games on this rundown were originally PS4 titles, and whether that speaks to a strength in Sony’s prior generation or a weakness on current gen is up to you. Regardless, the games here blend the stately exploration and storytelling of adventure alongside refined, skilful combat found in action, so it’d be remiss to exclude them here.

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown

Expectation was moderate following Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown’s announcement, perhaps given the mediocracy of Assassins Creed’s side-scrolling Chronicles games, but The Lost Crown, in fact, will be remembered as a modern platforming masterpiece. Deep combat, enthralling, satisfying platforming, and time manipulation powers to unleash upon a host of enemies render this action-adventure game an exhilarating must play.

Hazelight Studios announces another major sales milestone for its much-lauded co-op platformer.

In the three-plus years since its release, Hazelight Studios’ narrative-driven co-op platformer It Takes Two has enjoyed consistent commercial success to match its widespread critical acclaim, and even now, the game continues to sell at a steady pace.

Taking to Twitter, Hazelight Studios announced that It Takes Two has now sold over 20 million units worldwide. “We’re so grateful to every one of the millions upon millions who have enjoyed their time with Cody and May,” the developer wrote.

In March earlier this year, it was announced that It Takes Two had sold over 16 million units, so clearly it has maintained impressive momentum where sales are concerned.

It Takes Two is available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. Earlier this year, the game was also fully optimized for the Steam Deck.

As for what Hazelight Studios is working on as its next project, the developer seemed to indicate earlier this year that more information would be shared on that front in 2024 itself. Could we perhaps be in line for an announcement at The Game Awards in December?

You don't need an insane budget for your game to be able to stand out.

The AAA space is where most of the action tends to be, but the AA space is where our hearts often beat the loudest. This, after all, is the space where you don’t typically have to worry about games being unnecessarily bloated, or games crumbling under their own gargantuan budgets and development cycles, or games that are unafraid to take risks and be experimental. That last bit is, in fact, what we’re focused on for this feature, as we go over what we feel are some of the most unique AA games we’ve ever played.

Before we move ahead, do keep in mind that calling a game AA or AAA isn’t a measure of its popularity or quality so much as it is a measure of the scope of its production and its development budget, which means we might also talk about AA experiences made by companies that usually operate in the AAA sphere. With that out of the way, let’s dive right in.

DISCO ELYSIUM

You could call Disco Elysium a CRPG, and on paper, technically, you would be correct, but that would also be an incredibly reductive way to describe this masterpiece. From its surreal setting to its heavily flavoured and thematically dense writing, from its complete lack of combat to how bizarrely yet ingeniously it uses its RPG mechanics in conjunction with its storytelling, Disco Elysium is a singular game that’s unlike anything else out there.
