Sony had earlier sued Kevin Butler–a character that they created for promoting the PlayStation brand–and due to a breach in contract due to Jerry Lambert advertising the Wii for Bridgestone tyres.

It has now been revealed that Lambert has agreed to not promoting video games for two years, which means you won’t really see him online. His online avatar known as Kevin Butler is a Sony intellectual property and without their permission no one is supposed to use them.’

He has also mentioned that he was wrong and the contract has mentioned that he should not be working on other ads. This has been resolved amicably without heavy penalties, and the only thing here is that Kevin Butler as a character cannot be revived.

It’s not clear what will happen to the character and whether Sony will be using another guy to play his role but one thing is for certain, Kevin Butler campaign saved the PS3 along with the price drop.

Tell us what you think in the comments section below.

Thanks, Eurogamer.

Possibly for the PS4?

Oh the irony. There was a time when Kevin Butler, Sony’s darling, was mocking other motion tracking devices for letting you use your fingers like a gun and going “pew pew pew”. Now a new patent has arisen, showing Sony developing the exact same thing. That is, a finger tracking, depth sensing camera like Kinect.

One of the figures of the patent (show above) comes with the following description:

For example, the user may be able to shoot by different hand gestures, may be able to reload the gun with different gestures, and the different positions or orientations of the user’s hand may cause different graphical renderings of the user or gun on the display screen when the user is interacting with a particular game program.

The depth sensing apparently extends to audio as well. Of course, with Microsoft touting AR-sensing Kinect Glasses, it’ll be interesting to see the day all these technologies collide. E3 2013, perhaps?

"Bridgestone denies that 'Kevin Butler' appears in the commercial."

Sony recently sued Bridgestone and Jerry Lambert’s ad agency for “damages” and trying to confuse customers as Lambert’s Kevin Butler portrayal was an iconic thing for the Playstation brand.

Bridgestone has denied that Kevin Butler was in the commercial and have simply said that only Jerry Lambert played the role of a Bridgestone engineer there. I know some of you must be going “lol what” upon hearing this, but that’s how lawyers work. Scary, isn’t it?

“Mr. Lambert is one of the actors who appeared in the commercial as a Bridgestone engineer,” read the Bridgestone statement (Via The Hollywood Reporter. “Bridgestone denies that ‘Kevin Butler’ appears in the Bridgestone commercial discussed herein and thus denies that he speaks or does anything whatsoever in the commercial.”

So now it’s Sony’s turn. But it would be wise to drop this petty suit altogether, because it does no one any good. Sony’s reason for suing was this: “We invested significant resources in bringing the Kevin Butler character to life and he’s become an iconic personality directly associated with PlayStation products over the years. Use of the Kevin Butler character to sell products other than those from PlayStation misappropriates Sony’s intellectual property, creates confusion in the market and causes damage to Sony.”

Thanks, Eurogamer.

Just when you thought interesting news were drying up, it has been revealed that Sony has sued Kevin Butler –the guy who started the marketing blitz when the $299 Slim was launched in 2009 – over advertising for a tire company – Bridgestone.

There was a specific advertisement by Bridgestone called GameOn where you could win a Nintendo Wii and a $70 American Express card on purchase of a set of tires.

Back to school, back to sports, back to life. Fall is busy, get ready with a set of new Bridestone tires and a little something in return. For a limited time, get a $70 American Express Reward Card or Wii system when you purchase a set of four eligible Bridgestone tires. Offer valid August 27 – September 30, 2012.

The commercial for this has been removed but it featured Jerry Lambert (Kevin Butler). They are also suing the advertising company who created this commercial – Wildcat Creek, Inc.

Oh well… You can check out the court documents below. They are suing for intellectual property infringement. That’s right, for Kevin Butler.

Plaintiff: Sony Computer Entertainment America LLC

Check out the latest ad from Kevin Butler, which will probably make you preorder Resistance 3. You can check out our Resistance 3 beta preview here. This is what the author wrote (thats me!),

Resistance has been a conflicted franchise, with a difference of opinion splintering the fanbase. Developer Insomniac has been pretty attentive to what the community wants, although, we know it is incredibly hard to satisfy all of them. That doesn’t mean Insomniac didn’t try, they did. Resistance 2 tried to be accessible, and had some multiplayer innovations, but also alienated a lot of fans that loved the first game. What would a developer do in this situation?

Intrigued?

Check out the entire preview here.

The game releases on September 6th exclusively for the PS3. Tell us what you think of the video in the comments section below.
