Not all gems see the success they deserve.

There’s no shortage of excellent games in the PS2’s legendary library, but a byproduct of that is that not all of these excellent games saw nearly as much commercial success as they deserved to. For a variety of reasons, there were several titles on the system that just didn’t sell very well, in spite of being really good games. In this feature, we’ll take a look at fifteen such games.

OKAMI

Okami is one of the best games Capcom has ever put out – and looking at their impressive catalog of games over the years, that’s no small praise. With its beautiful aesthetic, its engaging gameplay, and fantastic design, it stands out as one of the best games on every system it is playable on. That said, the sales of the game were nowhere near as good as that sort of praise warrants, with only a little over half a million units sold in three years. Hopefully, Capcom decides to give this property another shot, and hopefully, that hypothetical sequel sells better than its predecessor.

Just when you think the fight's really about to start, these bosses high-tail it.

What’s more fun than going up against a boss that bashes your head in, again and again, without remorse? Or a boss that’s disappointingly easier than many of the challenges faced up to that point? Why, a boss that runs the heck away, prompting your pursuit for any chance at ending the ordeal. Let’s take a look at 15 such bosses here.

General Mikiel – Strider

General Mikiel has no qualms about attacking from afar and then retreating when Strider approaches. And you can kind of respect that strategy but as a boss fight, having to chase him through several rooms before he finally hops in his tank and stands his ground? It’s…interesting, that’s for sure.

Suda51's bizarre shooter is currently discounted on Steam until November 22nd.

Arguably the game that made Goichi “Suda51” Suda famous, Grasshopper Manufacturer’s Killer7 is now available on Steam. The PC version has been discounted by 10 percent for its launch week and currently retails for $17.99. From November 22nd onwards, it will cost the usual $19.99.

What’s in the package for those who’ve already experienced the game on PS2 or GameCube? According to publisher NIS America, the frame rate is now 60 frames per second (save for the reload animations, which are locked at 30 frames per second). You can reconfigure key bindings, and even split actions like “Walk”, “Fire” and “Accept”, which were originally mapped to a single button in the older release.

The drawn animation sequences have also been upgraded, fitting 16:9 aspect ratio monitors. Otherwise, if you’re new to Suda51’s games and want a trippy experience with a wheelchair-bound assassin capable of morphing into one of seven different personas, Killer7 might be for you. Scope out the launch trailer below for more information.

Grasshopper Manufacture's bizarre action title will be making its return.

Grasshopper Manufacturer’s niche action title Killer7 is coming to PC via Steam in Fall this year. The developer announced the same at MomoCon and also that NIS America would be publishing it. As of now, finer details have yet to be revealed like graphics settings, support for higher resolutions and whatnot but it will be “optimized for PC”. So that’s good news.

Created by Goichi Suda, Shinji Mikami (Resident Evil, The Evil Within) and Hiroyuki Kobayashi (Sengoku Basara, Dragon’s Dogma), Killer7 follows an assassin with multiple personalities hunting down a terrorist group. The game’s trippy visuals and unorthodox story-telling combines elements of on-rails shooters, first person shooters and so on into one weird package.

Originally released in 2005 for PlayStation 2 and GameCube, Killer7 has often been looked upon as one of Grasshopper’s cult classics. The developer has been fairly busy as of late – it’s also working on Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes for the Nintendo Switch. It’s due to release later this year as well.

Not just because they're awesome, of course.

So far, Grasshopper Manufacture head Goichi Suda aka Suda 51 has featured some kind of assassin in every single game he’s worked in. But given the impressive track record his company has had with No More Heroes, Shadows of the Damned, Killer7 and the upcoming Killer is Dead, it’s becoming hard not to see a pattern.

When quizzed about this by Siliconera, Suda simply responded jokingly, “I think going back to the core essence, I used to be an assassin and that really reflects on what kind of games I want to make.

“I’m sorry, that’s me just being jetlagged. When you defeat an enemy, that equals death. If defeat equals death and you’re thinking about the fine line between living and dying, to express that in an action-oriented game an assassin [as a character] makes it much easier to express that.”

Sure, Suda. “Jetlagged”. Right.

The upcoming Killer is Dead has you playing as Mondo Zappa, an assassin who goes around bopping villains who use augmented weaponry to wreck havoc.
