The lawsuit was dismissed by the court with prejudice, which means that Sony can't revisit its lawsuit against Tencent in court.

The legal battle between Sony and Tencent regarding the similarities between the former’s Horizon franchise and the latter’s Light of Motiram has come to an end with the two companies having reached a settlement. As caught by The Game Post, a recent filing for the lawsuit had both companies jointly asking the court to dismiss the case since they have signed an agreement.

While details about this settlement are confidential, the court has dismissed the case with prejudice, which means that Sony can’t pursue a lawsuit for similar reasons again. Check out the full court statement below.

“Pursuant to Federal Rule of Civil Procedure and the confidential settlement of all parties, Plaintiff Sony Interactive Entertainment LLC and Defendants Tencent America LLC, Proxima Beta U.S. LLC, Tencent Holdings Ltd., Proxima Beta PTE Ltd., and Tencent Technology (Shanghai) Company Ltd., by and through their undersigned counsel of record, hereby stipulate as follows:

“All pending motions are withdrawn and this action is hereby dismissed with prejudice. All parties shall bear their own fees and costs.”

While most details about the settlement are unknown, it looks like one of the conditions was removing Light of Motiram from storefronts. This has happened, with the game not having a store page on Steam or Epic Games Store.

Sony had first filed the lawsuit all the way back in July, having accused Tencent of stealing ideas from the Horizon franchise. In its initial lawsuit, Sony referred to Light of Motiram as being a “slavish clone” of the Guerrilla-developed open-world titles Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West, at least in terms of visuals. As a part of its filing, Sony was seeking monetary damages up to an unspecified amount, along with a court order that would block Tencent from violating the Horizon IP.

Tencent responded with its own statement, calling Sony’s lawsuit “improper attempt to fence off” pop culture. The company alleged that Sony was not interested in “fighting off piracy, plagiarism, or any genuine threat to intellectual property.”

“It is an improper attempt to fence off a well-trodden corner of popular culture and declare it Sony’s exclusive domain,” said Tencent in a statement.. “In Sony’s telling, Horizon Zero Dawn is ‘like no fictional world created before [or] since.’” Tencent calls this claim “startling, because it is flatly contradicted by Sony’s own developers, not to mention the long history of video games featuring the same elements that Sony seeks to monopolize through this lawsuit.”

The company noted that Sony’s basis for the lawsuit was superficial, and went on to name several other games that featured similar aesthetics, including The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Biomutant, and Outer Wilds, among others.

Sony would fire back in October by calling Tencent’s statement “nonsense” in a 42-page statement. The PlayStation maker said that “The damage is done—and it continues. SIE has already suffered injury by Tencent promoting its knock-off game, as made clear by the many instances of actual consumer confusion documented in the Complaint that Tencent does not—and cannot—challenge in its motion. The Court can redress past, ongoing, and imminent infringement.”

Along with this, Tencent has also agreed to not move up the release date for Light of Motiram from its Q4 2027 release window.

As the lawsuit between Sony and Tencent over Light of Motiram being a “slavish clone” of the Guerrilla Games-developed Horizon franchise, the Chinese publisher has agreed to stop promoting the title as part of the legal proceedings. This agreement was spotted by The Game Post in a recently-filed stipulation and proposed order for the lawsuit.

Among the actions noted in the filing are the fact that “there will be no new promotion or public testing of Light of Motiram during the pendency of the Motion for Preliminary Injunction,” and that “the Light of Motiram release will not be moved up to before Q4 2027,” as well as Tencent not being able to “seek expedited discovery in connection” with the motion.

The motion for preliminary injunction is slated to take place on December 17, with Sony’s deadline for filing its response to this motion being January 2, 2026. The main court hearing date on the motions for dismissal as well as for preliminary injunction are both slated to take place on January 29, 2026.

Sony had filed its lawsuit back in July, where it had referred to Light of Motiram as a “slavish clone” of the Horizon games. As part of this initial filing, the company had also confirmed that it was approached by Tencent for a collaboration on a new title in the franchise, but that this was ultimately declined. Sony alleges that Tencent went ahead and kicked off development of Light of Motiram. The console maker’s goal with the lawsuit is to seek monetary damages up to an unspecified amount, as well as a court order to block Tencent from violating the Horizon IP.

In response to this, Tencent had offered up its own statement, calling Sony’s lawsuit an “improper attempt to fence off a well-trodden corner of popular culture.”

“Plaintiff Sony has sued a grab-bag of Tencent companies – and ten unnamed defendants – about the unreleased video game Light of Motiram, alleging that the game copies elements from Sony’s game Horizon Zero Dawn and its spinoffs,” said Tencent about the lawsuit. “At bottom, Sony’s effort is not aimed at fighting off piracy, plagiarism, or any genuine threat to intellectual property.”

“It is an improper attempt to fence off a well-trodden corner of popular culture and declare it Sony’s exclusive domain,” the statement continued.

While Tencent went ahead and referred to other popular media, including The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Biomutant, Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, Far Cry Primal and Outer Wilds among many others that make use of similar aesthetics, Sony would fire back with its own statement weighing in at 42 pages in length, where the company would call Tencent’s lengthy statement “nonsense”.

Since the lawsuit, Tencent had also updated the Steam listing for Light of Motiram with brand new art work that removed the potential for comparison with the Horizon franchise.

"The damage is done" said Sony in a statement against Tencent for Light of Motiram being a "slavish clone" of the Horizon series.

In the latest chapter of Sony’s lawsuit against Tencent for the promotional art used for Light of Motiram, the former company has released a new 42-page statement which calls Tencent’s previous statements “nonsense”. In its own statement, Sony also goes into detail about why it believes its lawsuit isn’t simply “an improper attempt to fence off” pop culture, as Krafton previously said.

“Tencent remarkably contends [Sony Interactive Entertainment]’s claims are unripe because—despite having announced and continuously promoted its game for months—Tencent (purportedly) delayed Light of Motiram’s release until 2027 after SIE sued,” wrote Sony in its statement. “This is nonsense. The damage is done—and it continues. SIE has already suffered injury by Tencent promoting its knock-off game, as made clear by the many instances of actual consumer confusion documented in the Complaint that Tencent does not—and cannot—challenge in its motion. The Court can redress past, ongoing, and imminent infringement.”

Further in the document, the company also calls in to question Tencent’s claims that it shouldn’t fall under the jurisdiction of US-based courts, since Tencent Holdings is based out of the Cayman Islands. Sony noted that “this Court has jurisdiction over Tencent Holdings. The multi-billion dollar global conglomerate holds the U.S. trademark registration for the infringing game Light of Motiram and owns the domain registration for the official promotional website where much of the material giving rise tot he lawsuit was performed and distributed to a California and U.S. audience.”

Sony filed its lawsuit against Tencent in California back in July, accusing the company of stealing ideas from the Horizon franchise for upcoming title Light of Motiram. In its lawsuit, Sony called Tencent’s game a “slavish clone” of Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West, and has alleged that the release of Light of Motiram will end up causing consumer confusion.

As part of its filing, Sony also revealed that Tencent had initially approached the company for a collaboration for a new game in the Horizon franchise last year, but that it had declined this. Shortly afterwards, Tencent unveiled Light of Motiram. The goal of the lawsuit for Sony is monetary damages up to an unspecified amount, along with a court order to prevent Tencent from infringing on the Horizon IP.

In response to this lawsuit, Tencent had released its own statement, calling the company out for its “improper attempt to fence off a well-trodden corner of popular culture”.

Tencent also noted other games from throughout the industry that also look similar to the aesthetics presented in Light of Motiram, including Far Cry: Primal, Far Cry: New Dawn, and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, among others.

Sony had a filed a lawsuit against Tencent, alleging that the upcoming Light of Motiram is a "slavish clone" of its Horizon franchise.

In light of Sony’s lawsuit against Tencent which claims that the latter company’s upcoming title Light of Motiram is a “slavish clone” of the former’s Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West, Tencent has now offered its own statement on the matter. As caught by GamesRadar, Tencent’s response to the lawsuit involves the company calling Sony out for its “improper attempt to fence off a well-trodden corner of popular culture”.

“It is an improper attempt to fence off a well-trodden corner of popular culture and declare it Sony’s exclusive domain,” the statement continues. “In Sony’s telling, Horizon Zero Dawn is ‘like no fictional world created before [or] since.'” Tencent calls this claim “startling, because it is flatly contradicted by Sony’s own developers, not to mention the long history of video games featuring the same elements that Sony seeks to monopolize through this lawsuit.”

Further in its statement, Tencent even brings up comparisons made by art director of Horizon Zero Dawn, Jan-Bart Van Beek, drew with 2013 action adventure title Enslaved: Odyssey to the West.

“Sony’s complaint tellingly ignores these facts,” said Tencent. “Instead it tries to transform ubiquitous genre ingredients into proprietary assets. By suing over an unreleased project that merely employes the same time-honored tropes embraced by scores of other games released both before and after Horizon—like Enslaved, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Far Cry: Primal, Far Cry: New Dawn, Outer Wilds, Biomutant, and many more—Sony seeks an impermissible monopoly on genre conventions.”

Tencent then goes on to bring up faults in Sony’s complaints, such as the latter not alleging any facts that would implicate actions by Tencent under a jurisdiction where Sony would operate, as well as Sony’s lack of statement with regards to a claim for which relief could then be granted. “Instead, Sony’s threadbare, conclusory allegations improperly lump [Tencent America, Proxima Beta U.S. and Tencent Holdings] together with the foreign companies alleged to be responsible for the core conduct at issue.” Finally, Tencent also calls out Sony for “speculation regarding potential future conduct related to Light of Motiram’s forthcoming release”.

Sony had announced its lawsuit against Tencent for Light of Motiram back in July, with the allegations of it being a “slavish clone” of the Horizon titles that has the potential to confuse potential buyers because of the similarities between the how the titles look. In response to the lawsuit, Tencent had changed up some of its marketing for Light of Motiram, going as far as changing up the art work for the title that was being shown off on its Steam page. This includes the removal of any mentions of “colossal machines”.

The civilized world is still a memory in Tencent's base-builder, but the Aloy lookalike and robot elephants have been removed.

When Light of Motiram, Tencent’s new base-building survival co-op title, was first announced, it immediately received criticism for its resemblance to Guerrilla Games’ Horizon series. Sony seemingly thought so as well, suing the company for what it called a “slavish Horizon clone.”

Several days later, it seems Tencent is in the process of reducing the similarities. Its Steam page, once showcasing an Aloy-like figure and robot elephants (seen above), has been updated to remove both. Any mention of “colossal machines” is also gone; however, it’s still set in a world where “civilization is a distant memory”, with “primal cultures” and “extreme weather” that will test one’s survival skills.

Whether this will be enough for Sony to drop its lawsuit remains to be seen. As such, Light of Motiram, developed by Polaris Quest, is out in Q1 2027, and it could distance itself even further. Stay tuned.

Meanwhile, the same lawsuit revealed that the Horizon series has sold over 38 million units thus far. Guerrilla Games hasn’t announced a sequel, but it’s allegedly “a ways off.” An online title, reportedly developed with NCSoft, is also seemingly in the works.

Light of Motiram was getting compared to the Horizon games immediately after its announcement, with even its key art being similar.

The video game industry is seeing quite a few lawsuits these days. According to a report by Reuters, Sony Interactive has filed a new lawsuit against Tencent in the California federal court for trademark infringement. As part of its lawsuit, the PlayStation maker has accused Tencent of stealing ideas from its Horizon series for upcoming game Light of Motiram.

In the lawsuit, Sony has referred to Light of Motiram as being a “slavish clone” of its Guerrilla-developed titles Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West, and has alleged that the title will confuse potential buyers because of how similar Tencent’s game looks.

Sony has also revealed that it was approached by Tencent for a collaboration on a new game in the Horizon franchise some time last year, but that it declined. The announcement for Light of Motiram, according to Sony, came shortly after this collaboration approach. Through the lawsuit, Sony is seeking monetary damages up to an unspecified amount, as well as a court order that would block Tencent from violating the Horizon IP.

Light of Motiram was announced late last year, and instantly came under fire for how similar it looks to Sony’s Horizon games. Fans were quick to take to Reddit threads and other social media platforms to discuss the similarities between the Mechanimals of Light of Motiram and the machines we see in Horizon games. Even the key art, noted fans, was incredibly similar.

Light of Motiram got a trailer earlier this year that gave us a look at the Outcast Forest zone. Along with showcasing the zone itself, the trailer also went into detail about some of the more unique aspects of the upcoming title’s gameplay, such as the ability for players to put on a helmet that can allow them to take control of the Mechanimals.

The zone itself was described in the trailer as a woodland area where exiles of the Dariman Tribe were sent after being convicted of crimes. This likely means that players will have their hands full as they deal with hardened criminals, and that friendly characters and allies will likely be hard to come by.

Light of Motiram is currently in development for PC (via Steam and Epic Games Store), PS5, iOS and Android. Neither Tencent, nor developers Aurora Studio and Polaris Quest have confirmed a release date for the game so far. However, it has been available to wishlist through online stores for quite some time now, with the store listings noting a 2025 release window. When it comes out, the title will be free-to-play.

The upcoming game will have quite a bit of emphasis on its survival mechanics, and players will have to make sure that they have enough materials to not only build up their base, but also to craft equipment that is good enough to allow them to survive in its harsh environments. The building system itself will be powered by realistic physics simulations to allow players quite a bit of freedom in their architecture.

Light of Motiram also has online multiplayer, letting players jump in and out of each others’ games without having to worry about matching progression.

The latest trailer for Light of Motiram also shows off plenty of gameplay, both against normal enemies as well as boss fights.

Aurora Studio and Polaris Quest have released a new trailer for upcoming survival game Light of Motiram. The minute-long trailer, which you can check out below, showcases gameplay from its Outcast Forest zone.

Along with giving us a look at the zone in general, the trailer also shows off some of the more unique aspects of gameplay in Light of Motiram. This includes the ability to put on a helmet that allows players to take control one of the many robotic creatures from the game.

In terms of the in-game story, the Outcast Forest has been described by the developers as a woodland area where convicts of the Dariman Tribe are exiled. This means that most of the characters that players encounter in the area will likely be hardened criminals, rather than friendly allies.

Towards the back half of the trailer, we also get glimpses at several of the game’s boss fights against its robot beasts. The boss fights shown in the trailer look like they would be fairly intricate in terms of mechanics that players have to deal with, as well as overall level of challenge.

Back in November, the game was the subject of criticism for how similar it looked to Guerrilla Games’ Horizon franchise. While Light of Motiram does have its own unique features, such as the survival gameplay that includes base-building as well as support for co-op multiplayer, its Mechanimals do bear quite a bit of resemblance to the robotic wildlife we’ve seen from the Horizon games.

Despite these similarities, however, neither Sony nor Guerrilla Games have made any comments about the matter. Both of the companies’ silence likely means that Light of Motiram won’t be seeing any legal action taken against it.

Light of Motiram is currently in development for PC (via Steam and Epic Games Store), PS5, iOS and Android. The game doesn’t yet have a confirmed release date, but it is available to wishlist on online stores. When it comes out later this year, Light of Motiram will be a free-to-play game.

The survival mechanics will play a key role in Light of Motiram, with players needing to gather various materials that they can then use to build up their base and also create new equipment. According to the game’s description, it will make use of realistic physics simulations to power its freeform building system. Players will have quite a bit of freedom in how they build their base, with examples even showing off elaborate tree houses among an otherwise-normal town.

Owing to its emphasis on the ecosystem created by the Mechanimals roaming around its world, Light of Motiram will also allow players to befriend and take control of these mechanical beasts. Through this, players will also have the ability to customise their Mechanimals with new weapons and improvements to other parts.

Light of Motiram also promises seamless online multiplayer, allowing players to jump in and out of each others games without having to worry about matching up their progression. Through co-op, players can take part in every activity together, from partaking in epic hunts to just building out a massive home base together. The game will also support cross-play.

Though it features co-op, base-building, and Mechanimal taming, the title has drawn criticism for copying Horizon's art style.

Tencent recently announced a new open-world survival crafting title with Light of Motiram, developed by subsidiary Polaris Quest and coming to PC. A release date is unknown, but its teaser trailer drew significant attention for a different reason: The obvious resemblance to Guerrilla Games’ Horizon Zero Dawn and Forbidden West.

One Reddit thread discusses how the art style and Machines (known as Mechanimals) are a dead ringer for the two, right down to the key art. Light of Motiram does have its fair share of features that Horizon doesn’t, including co-op for up to ten players, base-building, and Mechanimal taming. Combat is also much more hack-and-slash heavy, and there’s even cross-platform play.

However, it’s hard not to see the resemblance between the games. Neither Guerrilla Games nor Sony has commented on the title, and one has to wonder if Light of Motiram could face any legal action. Stay tuned for more details and updates.
