Lily Bergamo's essentials became Let It Die and Tae Ioroi is no more.

It’s just as everyone feared but wouldn’t say aloud: Grasshopper Manufacture’s Lily Bergamo, a PS4 exclusive announced last year, is no more. Actually, the game evolved into Let It Die, a PS4 exclusive that focuses on grindhouse gore and multiplayer combat.

Speaking to Famitsu (translated by Gematsu), it seems the idea was always to create an action game but we won’t be seeing Lily Bergamo protagonist Tae Ioroi ever again.

Goichi Suda then talked more about the game’s multiplayer. Essentially, Let It Die is a free to play title and will allow you to create your own avatar. You customize this avatar by scavenging equipment from enemies and it seems there may be avenue for micro-transactions in that regard. Interestingly, as players die, their data is then harvested and used to create new enemies for other players’ games.

There’s definitely more to know about the game but it’s a shame that Lily Bergamo was retired. What are your thoughts on the transition to Let It Die? Let us know in the comments.

Goichi Suda talks about the console's speed and how Lily Bergamo came about.

Grasshopper Manufacture’s Goichi Suda aka Suda 51 recently praised the development aspects of the PS4, especially with regards to the speed, in an interview with Famitsu. The developer is working on bringing Lily Bergamo exclusively to the console.

“The most impressive one to me so far has got to be ‘speed’. As a video game console, that’s the part the stood out to me the most for the PlayStation 4. We make games, so we want to make them fun, and we also put a lot of effort into making them as appealing as possible. In order to do that, we need hardware that can show ‘speed’.

“When it comes to making games, having this ‘speed’ available as an ingredient really puts us at ease. Even as we currently develop, we can really feel the response of having it available.”

Suda didn’t clarify on what aspect of the hardware offered the speed though. As for Lily Begamo, it apparently came about when GungHo Entertainment CE Kazuki Morishita and Goichi Suda brainstormed for a bit. “I’ve been keeping an eye on the PS4 from its early stages, and decided to challenge this platform, so we decided to develop it for PS4.”

Lily Bergamo is expected to release in 2014.

Plus a few tid bits about the game.

In a recent interview with Famitsu, developer Suda51 shared a number of details for the upcoming PS4 title, Lily Bergamo, and spoke to the team’s excited outlook on the eventual release. One of the main reveals was the name of the game’s protagonist, which will be Tae Ioroi.

In addition to the game’s release on PS4, there will also be a companion app, which will be usable on the Dualshock 4’s touchpad. The only details Suda51 revealed regarding the companion app, however, were that it would be the result of a collaboration with other game developers.

Suda 51 has said that the development for PS4 is quite easy, and that by adding the additional component of the Dualshock 4 Companion app, he is adding a layer of difficulty not only to the game’s development, but to the game play mechanic of the game itself.

Suda concluded the interview by reiterating that he is above all else a gaming fan just like any one would play his game, and that he is very much looking forward to the PS4’s launch in Japan.

Grasshopper Manufacture's director also talks about the excellent quality of indie games.

Grasshopper Manufacture’s Goichi Suda aka Suda51 recently spoke to Expansive DLC about the next-generation of consoles. He stated that it was too early to judge the PS4 and Xbox One with games, irrelevant of platform, being the most important thing.

“I guess what’s more important is the video game itself and not the platform it’s on, and I think it’s really important to be able to have the chance to play all kinds of different games – not just mega AAA titles but indie games too.

“You know, indie games are not necessarily poorly made, I think nowadays we are shifting towards the era where you get to play all kinds of different games of different sizes – but they are all equally as good.”

That’s been seen with Housemarque’s Resogun, which pulled ahead of Killzone: Shadow Fall and Knack, to be the highest rated game on the PS4 thus far. While the PS4 will release in Europe on November 29th, the Xbox One will release on November 22nd. Grasshopper Manufacture is currently developing Lily Bergamo exclusively for the PS4.

Siliconera has discovered that Grasshopper Manufacture’s Lily Bergamo has been trademarked in North America. The filing is through GungHo Online Entertainment, and indicates that the PS4 title will be heading to North America (and eventually Europe).

Details are scant on Lily Bergamo, which looks to be a third person action game featuring a female protagonist that can annihilate armies within minutes. It will be releasing in 2014 and marks the first PlayStation 4 title from Grasshopper Manufacture and from director Suda51.

The studio’s last release, Killer is Dead, didn’t do very well, be it commercially or critically with considerable controversy dogging its release. You can read our review for the game here. Will Grasshopper try to push the envelope again with Lily Bergamo or will it be going back to basics? More importantly, can we expect an Xbox One release any time down the line? Stay tuned for more; in the meantime, check out a teaser for Lily Bergamo below.

Wants to emphasize the relationship between players.

Speaking to Game Informer at the Tokyo Game Show, Grasshopper Manufacture director Goichi Suda aka Suda 51 was asked about his thoughts on what he expects with the next generation of consoles, namely the PS4 and Xbox One. Suda talked about going beyond the typical notions of multiplayer and actually emphasizing the relationship between players.

“If I were to use a term it would probably be ‘beyond multiplayer’. Right now multiplayer is set to that we’re connecting together one person with another person, and I think with next-gen the opportunity is there to create something in addition to that. So you’re putting two people together and these people are just playing together, but what is the relationship between these people?

“There’s another layer to that you can add. To go beyond putting one person with another person. Not just the connection but having an actual… I want to say ecosystem. Placing two people together in a room is simple, but the type of relationship these people are going to have is completely different. I think having that relationship is an additional layer that next-gen is going to be able to provide.

“Right now, we are all connected, but with next-gen I think you are able to connect with pretty much anybody in the world, and maybe between just a handful of people there’s this group with a really emotional relationship, and you’re able create something so deep that it affects your gameplay as well. That’s something I think will happen with next-gen, and that could probably change the gameplay experience depending on who you play with.”

How will it play out, especially considering that Grasshopper Manufacture hasn’t been going great guns with the recent Killer is Dead bombing in sales and with critics? We’ll find out, especially since Grasshopper is developing Lily Bergamo exclusively for the PlayStation 4.

Despite the horrible commercial success of Killer is Dead, not to mention the middling reviews for the Xbox 360/PS3 hack and slash adventure, Grasshopper Manufacture is prepping for its next project. At today’s Sony presser, it was revealed that it would be its first PlayStation 4 title and will be the fist collaboration between Grasshopper Manufacture and GungHo Entertainment since their partnership. Check out Lily Bergamo below.

So again, we have a samurai or ninja-esque character who can lay down heaps of damage on groups of enemies. Surely we haven’t seen anything like this before, have we? Regardless, it will be out in 2014, with more details due at this month’s Tokyo Game Show.

Check out our review of Killer is Dead here for more information on what the developer has been up to recently. Will Lily Bergamo be released in time for the PlayStation 4’s launch in Japan on February 22nd 2014, or will it be arriving in the latter half of the year? We’ll find out as the details arrive.
