Several trends have come and gone over the years, from loot boxes and Quick Time Events to paid map packs and passwords.

Trends come and go in gaming, which can also apply to gameplay mechanics. Some things that were dominant years ago may not be as popular today. That’s not always bad, though – it also means that certain shady practices are less common now, if not extinct. Let’s look at ten things that games rarely do nowadays, and why.

Quick Time Events

There was a time when Quick Time Events or QTES were in nearly everything. What was it about hitting the right button at the right time that felt so exhilarating? Maybe it was the minimal effort to do cool things, but entire franchises leaned on them, from shooters and cinematic adventures to hack-and-slash titles.

Nowadays, however, they’re rare, most likely due to oversaturation. Despite being present in the original, Resident Evil 4 Remake removed them and added new mechanics like knife parries. Like a Dragon: Ishin! has them for certain attacks and climatic battles, but it is a remake of a 2014 title. While they won’t go away entirely – who knows with the next Dark Pictures Anthology title – QTEs aren’t as favored as direct control over gameplay scenarios.

No matter how many times they fell, these bosses kept coming back stronger.

No matter how many times a particular boss is beaten, they just can’t take a hint. Maybe they’ll pop up in the sequel as the true mastermind behind the scenes. Or perhaps they didn’t really die in the previous battle and are now back for more. Only one thing is guaranteed and that’s how they’ll never truly be defeated. Let’s take a look at such bosses that fit into that category. Spoilers abound so beware.

Guardian Ape – Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

Immortality in Sekiro is a curse, something you learn firsthand when dealing with the Guardian Ape. It’s torturous enough with its grabs, slams and dung and you’d think things would end upon severing its head. However, the Guardian Ape resurrects and utilizes the sword embedded in its neck along with Terror to make the fight even more annoying. Stabbing its centipede ends the fight but won’t permanently kill the ape. Instead, when traveling to the Ashina Depths, you fight the Headless Ape again, only this time it receives some backup from its mate. Defeating it will result in the centipede taking a rest…until you come back with the Mortal Blade and kill it for good.

You'll be jumping through all kinds of hoops but these items are ultimately worth it.

As one obtains the best weapons and armor in a game, there’s always that one elusive item that warrants a chase. It may require lots of effort, sometimes more than seems worthwhile, but it ultimately proves worth it. Let’s take a look at 15 such items here.

Gjallarhorn – Destiny

When Destiny first launched, everyone was so busy trying to increase their Light level that they completely ignored a certain Exotic rocket launcher that Xur was selling. This was the Gjallarhorn, an absolute DPS monster that could reduce the toughest bosses to ashes (and also made for a very good PvP weapon with its Wolfpack Rounds). Unfortunately, given how droprates worked and the unforgiving RNG – coupled with very few dedicated Exotic sources – it was near impossible to get for many players. It also didn’t help that Xur wouldn’t sell it again until a year or so later.

Costumes for Mega Man X, Mega Man Battle Network, and the Rabbids are also coming January 28th.

For those still angered by the fifth Challenger Pack in the current Fighters Pass for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, there’s some reprieve. Director Masahiro Sakurai showcased some new Mii Fighter costumes that would be coming on January 28th. They include Altair from Assassin’s Creed, the Rabbids and, out of nowhere, Cuphead.

The Cuphead Mii Fighter costume includes more than just the outfit. Players will also gain access to “Floral Fury” which is the music track for the game’s Cagney Carnation boss fight. Other cool new costumes include X from the Mega Man X series and MegaMan.EXE from the Mega Man Battle Network series.

Each Mii Fighter costume will cost $0.75 at launch. Also coming on January 28th is Fighters Pass Vol. 2 which will provide six new Challenger Packs till December 21st 2020. Though the contents of the pass haven’t been revealed, it should be worth the value especially considering the current roster of DLC fighters.

New Mii Fighter costumes also revealed from some unexpected franchises.

It’s been a busy day for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate fans. Banjo-Kazooie, the newest Challenger Pack, has gone live, and Terry Bogard from Fatal Fury was announced as the next DLC fighter. But that’s not all – in a lengthy video with director Masahiro Sakurai, he showcases the moves for Banjo-Kazooie, along with the new stage and tunes.

The real surprise is the reveal of the new Mii Fighter costumes, which crossover with other franchises. Swordfighters get Goemon from Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon, along with Zero from the Mega Man X series. Proto Man from the Mega Man series is also in as a new Gunner skin. Brawlers get new Team Rocket skins from Pokemon.

But the best is yet to come, as Sans from Undertale has also been revealed as a new Gunner skin. With Toby Fox collaborating with Game Freak on the upcoming Little Town Hero, perhaps there’s a chance of other Undertale characters being added in the future. Stay tuned for more details, and check out the video in full below.

Because getting your ass handed to you by the same boss fifteen times in a row isn't challenging enough.

Though there are many gamers who prefer their games to be breezy enjoyable experiences more than anything else, there are others still who want nothing more than a challenge. So much so, that they go out of their ways to make the games they’re playing much more challenging than they ordinarily are, oftentimes in bizarre and ridiculous fashion. In this feature, we’ll be taking a look at times gamers did just that.

SEKIRO: SHADOWS DIE TWICE

It’s not like Sekiro is a game that is lacking in challenge- not by a long shot. It sparked a debate about how important accessibility is in games when it launched, after all. But there are some people who clearly felt it wasn’t challenging enough (somehow). Take YouTuber Caesium, for instance. They played Sekiro and beat some of the game’s hardest bosses- but they did so using a steering wheel controller. Yes. Sekiro. With a steering wheel.

The ratings given by the Australian Ratings Board suggests that the games will be released as part of two separate collections.

Back in December, Capcom had announced that along with a new entry into the Mega Man X series, all eight of the existing games in the series would be released for the PC, PS4, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One in 2018. What we didn’t know however was how these games were going to be released.

Now, the Australian Ratings board has rated Mega Man X Legacy Collection and Mega Man X Legacy Collection 2. This suggests that the eight games will be split among these two collections and won’t be released as part of a single collection. Additionally, it remains to be seen whether these two collections will release on the same date or not.

There’s a lot to be excited for if you’re a fan of the Mega Man series with a new game on the horizon and these collections of the older games. For now, we’ll just have to wait for official information from Capcom to know more about their plans for these games.

Coming in 2018, we'll be getting ports of all eight Mega Man X titles and a new Mega Man.

During its Mega Man 30th anniversary celebration stream, Capcom dropped a number of new game announcements. First, it confirmed that all eight Mega Man X titles would be coming to the Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One and PC in 2018. It hasn’t stated whether they will be included in a single collection or available separately but we can certainly hope for the former.

However, Capcom also revealed that Mega Man 11 would be releasing in late 2018 for the Nintendo Switch, PC, Xbox One and PS4. This will be more in the style of old-school Mega Man titles but with a shiny coat of current gen paint. Check out the first gameplay trailer below.

If that weren’t enough, Mega Man Legacy Collection 1 and 2 will also be coming to the Nintendo Switch in Summer 2018. Mega Man Legacy Collection is already available for the Nintendo 3DS as of 2016. Whether both collections will arrive for the Nintendo Switch remains to be seen.

Some bosses just won't die when you want them to.

We’ve covered all kinds of bosses lately. Disgusting bosses, anticlimactic bosses, bosses that keep coming back for more, you get the drift. However, there’s a special kind of boss that warrants attention for their inability to die, at least legitimately and in certain parts of certain games. So while they may be invulnerable in one fight, you can probably best them later. For other situations though, let’s look at 15 video game bosses that you can’t kill, no matter what. Warning: The word “impossible” and variations of it are repeated a lot.

Note: The views expressed in this article are those of the author and do not necessarily represent the views of, and should not be attributed to, GamingBolt as an organization.

Fortune (1st Battle) – Metal Gear Solid 2

It’s not like “Lady Luck” Fortune is the toughest boss to kill in Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. She possesses a portable rail gun that can rip you apart easily but damaging her initially is impossible because bullets simply don’t hit her. Chalk this up to an electromagnetic device on her person that can deflect bullets and even disable nearby explosives. Whatever the case may be, just don’t waste your bullets in the early going.

Take a look at the awesome that could've been.

Polygon has unearthed a rather interesting cancelled project from the folks that brought us Metroid Prime and who subsequently went on to form Armature to work on it alongside Keiji Inafune. We’re talking about Maverick Hunter, a first person shooter that reimagined Mega Man X as a more gritty action game.

Heck, look at X’s appearance. It’s friggin’ demonic.

The game would feature several familiar elements from the X series including Charge Shots, Wall Jumping, Dashing and much more. You could also equip the weapons of fallen foes and even partake in platforming sequences.

Unfortunately, it seems the project began dying out when Inafune left Capcom. Which is a shame, since the X series seemed more in tune for a gritty franchise like this than the regular Mega Man games.

Nevertheless, hit up the link to see what could have been. And here’s a fun fact for you: the above Mega Man suit was designed by the same concept artist who would go on to create Iron Man’s armour for the Marvel’s movie franchise.
