"Definitive" is the last word you'd use to describe these games.

Ever since the release of the Xbox One and PS4, definitive editions of existing have been increasingly common. These usually include the base game with all of the DLC released thus far and since many games were making the jump between generations, it would make sense to have improved graphics. Right? Over time, the “definitive edition” tag has been used for everything from remasters with all of the content to glorified Game of the Year editions. Let’s take a look at six games which sadly weren’t all that definitive and couldn’t hide the fact.

Dishonored: Definitive Edition

Arkane Studios’ Dishonored debuted in 2012 for the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC, and despite arriving near the end of their life-cycles, it made an impact. The stealth gameplay, multiple ways to approach missions, consequences that had far-reaching effects on the story and so on established it as an excellent game. And it was all the more impressive that Arkane could deliver such a great experience with anti-aliasing, screen space ambient occlusion and depth of field on essentially outdated hardware.

So you would think that Dishonored Definitive Edition, which launched in August 2015 for Xbox One and PS4, would be a decent step up. No one expected remade visuals or heavily revamped assets but 1080p resolution and 60 frames per second seemed a given. Unfortunately, despite launching two years after the initial game – which could hit 60 fps on more inferior PC hardware – Dishonored Definitive Edition was stuck at 30 frames per second. Image quality is better, for sure, but the large amount of FXAA blurred significant amounts of details. Texture streaming issues, the lack of anisotropic filtering and other missing visual flourishes from the PC version didn’t help.

When it comes to Metal Gear Solid, most of the talk these days is about Metal Gear Solid 5 and the recent revamped version of the game that has combined both chapters in Hideo Kojima’s final story in the MGS series. That doesn’t mean the only focus should be on those games.

One YouTuber has underlined that statement, while also bolding it, as they have put out a new video showing Metal Gear Solid 3, which is widely considered to be the best of the series running on the Fox Engine. The game hasn’t been remastered or remade by the user. Kurko4 used Adobe After Effects and mods along with a few modifications to the hud of Metal Gear Solid 5 to bring it closer to the look and feel of Metal Gear Solid 3.

The ball is in your court, Konami. A remake of Metal Gear Solid 3 in the Fox Engine will really make you win back your long lost fans.

2015's Game of the Year edition now available.

Metal Gear Solid 5: The Definitive Edition is now officially out for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC and if you haven’t rushed out to the store and bought it, you should check out its official launch trailer.

On Monday, the creators of this collection of two games that were already released during this generation released a teaser trailer for the game and Tuesday they came with a longer, launch trailer. This launch trailer shows the kind of crazy action that takes place in both games, either separately or together in one package.

These games, of course were the last games that Hideo Kojima worked on in conjunction with Konami. That might be enough of an incentive to go out and get the Metal Gear Solid 5: The Definitive Experience and play everything again. Metal Gear Solid 5: The Definitive Edition is available now on the PS4, Xbox One and PC.

Always good to get another look.

Ahead of the game’s launch tomorrow, Metal Gear Solid 5: The Definitive Experience has got a brand new teaser trailer. Perhaps in order to stick to the rather enigmatic theme of the games this edition collects, the trailer is only 30 seconds long and just shows another good look at the action that awaits.

For those that don’t know, Metal Gear Solid 5: The Definitive Experience is Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain put into one disc. While some might have a bit of a problem with a kind of remastered edition coming out for games that were already offered in the current generation, this release makes sense.

Metal Gear Solid 5: The Definitive Edition allows people who only played one part of the two-part story to get a peek at the other half. While you are waiting to get your hands on whatever half you didn’t the first time around, check out the teaser trailer below. Metal Gear Solid 5: The Definitive Edition releases for the Xbox One, PS4 and PC on October 11.

Includes Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain with all DLC.

Metal Gear Solid 5: The Definitive Experience is official. Konami has announced the collection’s release for October 11th in the United States and October 13th in the UK. It will feature Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain along with all DLC released for these games including the Déjà Vu and Jamais Vu missions and all the multiplayer DLC released thus far for Metal Gear Online.

Releasing only for Xbox One, PS4 and PC, Metal Gear Solid 5: The Definitive Experience will cost $49.99/£34.99. Oddly enough, the PC version’s contents and price will be revealed at a “later date”. It will only be available on Steam as well.

Rumours of the compilation hit the interwebs not too long ago and it was assumed (since it’s been a year since the release of The Phantom Pain) that it would collect both Metal Gear Solid 5 games and all their DLC. Will you be picking it up? Let us know in the comments.
