The 2002 Game Boy Advance title is now playable on Nintendo Switch and sees Samus exploring a research station infested with X parasites.

As Metroid Prime Remastered reminds new and old players why it’s a masterpiece, Nintendo has added Metroid Fusion to Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. Released in 2002 for the Game Boy Advance, it’s considered one of the best games in the series. Now Nintendo Switch players can experience the magic for themselves.

Metroid Fusion sees Samus Aran traveling to a research station suffering from an outbreak of parasites called X. After nearly dying to X, it’s now Samus’s mission to eradicate them. Unfortunately, parasite-affected pieces of her armor have created the SA-X, a powerful copy of Samus that hunts her throughout.

As players traverse the station, they’ll retrieve Samus’s abilities – including classics like the Screw Attack and Wave Beam – and hopefully survive against the SA-X. If you’ve never experienced a 2D Metroid title, then Metroid Fusion is a great place to start. Stay tuned for more details on Game Boy titles coming to Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack in the coming months.

Things could have ended on a higher note with these titles but alas.

Have you ever played a game, enjoying its various highs and lows but dreading the inevitable conclusion? Has said conclusion come out of nowhere, leading to the desire for more? Let’s take a look at 15 games that encapsulated that feeling. Spoilers incoming so be warned.

Vanquish

Rocket sliding into cover and vaulting over in slow-mo to gun down foes never looked or felt as good as it did in Vanquish. But even at roughly six hours for the main campaign, it just simply ended following the battle with Bogey Alpha and Bravo. No final battle with Victor Zaitsev, who subsequently escapes and destroys Providence. Even US president Elizabeth Winters, who sought to destroy Moscow with Providence’s microwave transmitter, simply kills herself. At least Sam and Elena survived so that’s nice.

Nigh invulnerable and just as vicious, these enemies will never stop pursuing you.

When building tension, video games are defined by the threats thrown at the player. Some threats are more vicious while others are tough to kill (or just plain invincible). Combine these traits together and let loose an entity that hounds the player, cultivating an atmosphere of fear over where it could strike next, and you’ve created an effective stalker. Let’s take a look at 15 of the scariest stalkers in video games.

Xenomorph – Alien Isolation

Alien Isolation’s intelligent, menacing and nigh invulnerable Xenomorph is one of the more renowned stalkers in recent times. It can sense when you’re using the motion tracker nearby, will investigate any strange occurrences or noises made, and pounce on you when least expected. It even travels through the air ducts, making it all the harder to discern where it could be coming from. Yes, it’s scared of fire but limited flamethrower ammo means it won’t be long before it returns.

Can you face yourself and live? These 15 examples sure did.

A gigantic titan? An enormous robot? Flying after an escaping mad scientist? yawn! Ok, boss battles can take the form of nearly anything in video games, and their status as climactic set pieces in most games make them some of the most memorable parts of our favourite titles. But the kings of kings, the ones who we remember months and years after we finish the game, are the dopplegangers. Those mirror matches or evil versions that take the powerful abilities that we as the player have mastered and turns them against us, usually forcing a creative rethinking of our own approach in the process. We’d like to celebrate some of those here, so beware of spoilers ahead and be sure to share your own in the comments below.

SA-X – Metroid Fusion

The Metroid series was creating atmosphere and tension from simple world design as far back as its inception, so when Metroid Fusion took the series on a slightly different path for a handheld game, their masterstroke was introducing the SA-X. The result of her infected Power Suit being pulled together by the mimetic X Parasites, the player is hunted throughout the game by the heartless creature with the full power of a endgame Samus. Powerless to harm the SA-X, should they hear the telltale footsteps and accompanying anxiety, the player can only run or hide throughout the entirety of the game, until the final showdown at least.
