Bethesda's Todd Howard would "love to see it happen" but mods aren't on the agenda.

Of the many features that The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim has on Nintendo Switch, mod support isn’t one. Considering the turmoil that Bethesda went through to bring mods to the Xbox One and PS4 versions of The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim Special Edition, it makes sense that the Switch version would take time. Unfortunately, it seems mod support isn’t even in the pipeline.

Bethesda Game Studios executive producer Todd Howard held a talk during Gamelab last week and admitted that support for Skyrim on the Switch had been lacking. “Skyrim Switch has a big community that we haven’t supported the way we’d like.”

However, when Eurogamer spoke to Howard after and asked about his comments, he replied, “They asked for mods. They asked for Creation Club – ‘When are we getting more stuff?'” When asked what was being done to fix this, Howard responded, “Right now we’re doing nothing. People, they’re on other things. Our Switch group did Fallout Shelter…and that’s done really well. I’m surprised at how well it’s done.”

Prodded further on whether mods would be coming to Skyrim on Switch, Howard said, “We are not actively doing that. We would love to see it happen but it’s not something we’re actively doing.”

The developer is still pursuing mod support in its upcoming games, namely Fallout 76. The long-term goal is to allow players to have their own private servers with mods to create their own worlds. Currently though, Howard believes more could be done in making mods easily available.

Speaking to Geoff Keighley at Gamelab, Howard said, “We are still pushing on making that easily available to everybody. It definitely becomes this long-tail life of our games but if you look at the raw numbers it’s still not as great as we’d like – the people who are consuming the mods.

“We are always looking at ‘How do we get more creators creating great content?’ and ‘How do we make it easy and safe?’ The recent stuff we’ve done on the Bethesda.net side of Fallout 4 and Skyrim connecting to mods on consoles has worked out really really great – it’s way more popular than we ever thought. But we still think there’s a way to go there.

“Even though everyone’s connected and it matchmakes you to an invisible server, and you can play with your friends, we know, based on our history, that the future of [Fallout 76], the long life of it, is in people having their own worlds they can mod and make their own and say, ‘Hey come play in mine and see what I did.’ Or there’s an easy way for them to get mods and pick and choose ‘I want my game this way’, because no matter what we do, once you release tools and you have this huge community making things, the best stuff rises to the top.”

Fallout 76 is out on November 14th for Xbox One, PS4 and PC.

Update 1.8 finally adds mods.

Update 1.8 for Bethesda’s Fallout 4 will be releasing this week on consoles and for the PlayStation 4 in particular, it finally brings mod support. The news was confirmed by the developer on Twitter. The Creation Kit has been available for a while now on consoles so expect there to be enough mods available to try out at launch.

The PS4 version has to deal with some limitations (unlike Xbox One). The file size limit on mods is 1 GB and only in-game assets can be used for creating the mods. Originally, Bethesda faced several issues in getting approval for mods on PS4 from Sony but some compromises were had in the process. The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim Special Edition has similar restrictions on mods for PS4.

There will be other aspects of update 1.8 including bug fixes and whatnot (which will be included in the patch notes). What are your thoughts on mods finally coming to Fallout 4 on PS4? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

At long last.

It’s been a very long road, fraught with misunderstandings, drama, and even gloating by the competition– but we are now at an end for it. Bethesda have announced on Twitter that the next update for Fallout 4, due later this month, will enable mods for the PS4 version of the game. At last.

These mods will be far more limited than they are on Xbox One and, obviously, PC- they will have a total file size limit of 1GB, and they will only use assets available within the game files. This was a compromise Bethesda reached with Sony after Sony initially apparently blocked the release of mods on the system at all.

As of right now, only the Fallout 4 mods have a concrete release date on PS4- for Skyrim remastered, the mods will presumably be enabled on the PS4 at a later date. Fallout 4 and The Elder Scrolls Skyrim: Special Edition are both available on Xbox One, PS4, and PC.

The best Elder Scrolls has ever looked on consoles.

Sony’s PS4 Pro is almost here- and while not every game will actually support the new console, those that do will be able to benefit from, at the very least, the resolution bumps that the PS4 Pro’s upscaling will provide. Take Skyrim‘s just released remaster, for instance- it’s unclear exactly what the extent of its support for the PS4 Pro is likely to be, but the game seems to benefit immensely from running on the new console regardless.

Juniper Roth has gotten his hands on the PS4 Pro early, and he is playing a whole lot of video games on it, trying to see how they benefit from the new console. One of the games he gave a spin was Skyrim– and the already very well done remaster looks even better on the PS4 Pro. Without a doubt, this is the prettiest that The Elder Scrolls has ever looked on consoles.

You can check out the tweets with the embedded screenshots for yourself below (click on the images to open them in native resolution). The Elder Scrolls Skyrim: Special Edition is out now on PS4, Xbox One, and PC, and a Nintendo Switch version may be announced later.

One of the reasons gamers have been getting excited about the Skryim Remaster coming to current generation consoles is because of all the mods that should be coming with them. These mods are definitely coming to the Xbox One, but they are a bit of a hit or miss on the PS4.

One mod that has definitely landed on Microsoft’s console but won’t be coming to the PS4 is a pack known as Falskaar. This mod that is usable in Skyrim Remaster brings a ton of new content, including a brand new land mass that has new locations, missions and NPCs.

Created by Alexander J. Velicky this mod is said to bring about 26 new quests. This mod will bring about 20 extra hours to a game that can already eat up some time. You can check the video of Falskaar below and then download it into your Xbox One version of Skyrim Remaster.

Whereas a lot of players are largely done with remasters of older games on the whole, there are some titles that seem to be exempt from that treatment. These are games from the previous generation that were so good and so vastly influential, that players can’t turn down the opportunity to play enhanced versions of them. And indeed, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim was one such game- it was a title that people had been expecting a remaster for for quite a while, and when it was finally announced, there was jubilation instead of cynicism.

Of course, remasters are usually not Bethesda’s thing- not for their own in house games, anyway, which have never been modernized for newer systems. So why did Bethesda decide to remaster Skyrim? Yes, it remains their most successful game ever, but what specific reasoning prompted Bethesda to bring the game back?

In an interview with The Telegraph, Bethesda’s Todd Howard revealed that one big reasons was mods, and the team’s desire to bring them to consoles.

“As far as coming back to Skyrim, the mods were a big part of it,” Howard said. “Particularly on the PC, it still gets up into the top 10 Steam games and I think that’s because of mods. So that was one of the reasons we really wanted to have modding for Skyrim on the consoles. And I think the modding really builds into ‘you’re going to make this world your own.’”

Which is as good a reason as any to bring the game back- and even those who aren’t interested in modding Skyrim will get the chance to play it again, but better than ever before. Win win for everybody.

A must play for newcomers.

Bethesda have brought back one of their finest games of all time, The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim on current generation consoles. It’s quite amazing that almost five years have passed on since the original was released and yet Skyrim is regarded as the epitome of video game design and role playing mechanics. Having sunk hundreds of hours in the original Skyrim, playing the remaster with the same amount of intrigue is just a testament to how addictive this game is. The remaster brings back the same good old feeling…it almost felt like 2011 all over again.

You take on the role of Dovahkiin, the Dragonborn which instantly gives you powers like Dragon shouts, and you’re the only one that can free Skyrim from the Nordic Dragon, Alduin. However this is easier said than done. This is not due to game’s difficulty but the amount of stuff you can actually do in the game will easily distract you from playing the main campaign. Fighting against a dragon while an epic score is being played in the background really brings the entire atmosphere alive. It’s amazing how the game’s score still holds up five years after its original release.

"Skyrim is what gaming stands for, according to us: Freedom. Be free; do whatever you want and have a lot of fun."

The game begins with you making an adventurous escape from a dragon and making you way to the Jarl of Whiterun. Eventually you will kill one of the dragons and absorb its soul unlocking Dragon shouts. More shouts can be learned by clearing out dungeons or completing side mission and the main campaign. There are a ton of dungeons in the game, each intricately designed with enough puzzles, enemies and mysteries to uncover.

The game also features a comprehensive leveling up system allowing you to upgrade several parameters such as Destruction, Restoration, One-handed, Smithing, Sneak and more. Unlike the previous entries in the series Skyrim underwent major changes in the way it handles its combat and it’s great to see that it’s very much intact in the remaster. You can be stealthy or use magic to take our your enemies or use a combination of everything to get the job done. You can also recruit companions but they can be annoying due to their dumb AI. Further customization includes creating your equipment through blacksmiths or developing your own potions through alchemy.

The game’s world is massive so be ready to spend tons of hours in it if you did not got the chance to play the original. It’s literally amazing that after investing over 200 hours into the original, the remaster still feels so fresh and intriguing. The music accompanies the atmosphere extremely well and the game’s updated visuals goes a long way in creating a vibrant experience, specially for new players.

"Bugs and glitches still rule the roost here. Frequent clipping, character weird movements and the good old ludicrous horse physics are all pretty much intact here."

We played this game on the PlayStation 4 and there are a ton of differences compared to the PS3 version. Better performance, increase in foliage density, high resolution textures, improved lighting and much more. This is a remarkable remastering effort by Bethesda and although they haven’t changed and updated every nook and cranny of the game, it’s still an admirable effort given the scale of the world. However minor performance issues (at least early on) and some of the dumb AI/glitches are still present but at this point they have become so attached with the internet culture, Bethesda wouldn’t care to fix them, right? On a more serious note, bugs and glitches still rule the roost here. Frequent clipping, character weird movements and the good old ludicrous horse physics are all pretty much intact here.

Besides the visual upgrades, Skyrim on consoles features mod support. Although the basic installation is rather easy, the amount of mods on the PS4 are pretty low. On the Xbox One, there are already over 100 mods. We expect this to change over time but PS4’s file size limitations make some mods impossible to support. The PS4 version’s space for mods is limited to just 1 GB, while the Xbox One has 5 GB reserved for the same. This immediately gives the Xbox One version the upper hand as far as mod support goes and it’s rather disappointing to see the PS4 version suffer a due to this.

"The PS4 version’s space for mods is limited to just 1 GB, while the Xbox One has 5 GB reserved for the same. This immediately gives the Xbox One version the upper hand as far as mod support goes and it’s rather disappointing to see the PS4 version suffer a due to this."

Once you are done playing the main game (which will take ages!), it’s now time to take on some reasonably good DLCs for the game. The remaster, as expected comes along with all three pieces of downloadable content: Hearthfire, Dawnguard and Dragonborn. Hearthfire is disappointing with its adopting and home building system still feeling archaic. Dawnguard suffers from rehashing the same locations along with unimaginative quest lines on the vampire’s front. Fans can look forward to the ability to turn into a vampire but that is the most you are going to get out of Dawnguard. And finally, Dragonborn, which is perhaps the best DLC out of the three. Dragonborn sees you follow the quest-line of the original Dragonborn, the Dovahkiin Miraak. After Miraak turned evil, he was banished to Oblivion, and he is now trying to return to Tamriel. While the story fails on several occasions, the variety in quests and dragon riding never gets old.

Skyrim was one of the defining games of 2011, and if you are an RPG fan, do yourself a favour and pick up this remaster. It’s absolutely a no brainer if you haven’t played the original. Skyrim is what gaming stands for, according to us: Freedom. Be free; do whatever you want and have a lot of fun.

With less than a week to go before The Elder Scrolls 5 Skyrim launches on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One (and the PC of course), PlayStation Access got their hands on the PS4 version of the Skyrim remaster. As expected the remaster showcases some major improvements in the way lighting is handled along with subtle changes in the game’s renderer.

Due to this improvement, the colors pop out even more giving a vibrancy to the image quality that was never present on the last gen console versions of Skyrim. You can check out the entire comparison through the video below. Furthermore you can expect a full comprehensive technical analysis of the game when we are able to procure our own copy sometime next week.

For more on Skyrim you can check out some PS4 footage showcasing the various locations in the game or the Xbox One footage which shows off several minutes of gameplay footage. Thoughts on this remaster?
Here is your first look at the Xbox One version.

Just days ahead of the release of the Skyrim remaster, we finally have some actual gameplay footage to see whether the improvements that Bethesda promised at E3 this year will truly be delivered in the final release. But with over 20 minutes of gameplay footage that was just released for us to see, I think we can put all of our doubts to rest- it seems like The Elder Scrolls Skyrim: Special Edition will indeed be living up to its name, and provide a truly special rendition of the classic game.

In general, Skyrim‘s remaster looks good, although it is also evident that there isn’t that much of a change from the original game- a testament, if there ever was one, to just how great the original title was at launch back in 2011. The remaster shall be running at 30fps on Xbox One (and also PS4), though it is to be presumed that the PC version of the game will have uncapped frame rates.

The Elder Scrolls Skyrim: Special Edition will be launching later this month on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. A Nintendo Switch version of the game will also probably accompany the system’s launch.

Thanks, Outsidexbox.

The restrictions don't sound *that* bad.

After a lot of wrangling, mod support for the PS4 versions of The Elder Scrolls Skyrim: Special Edition and Fallout 4 was finally confirmed. However, Bethesda had confirmed that there would be restrictions on how mods work on PS4 compared to how they will work on Xbox One or PC. In a recent bunch of tweets, Bethesda’s Pete Hines clarified exactly what these restrictions will entail.

He confirmed that fans will be able to mod the game using any and all assets that are found the games or their DLC- but anything that is not found in the games code cannot be used for mods on PS4. He also confirmed that actually making mods that work on PS4 will require fans to purchase a PS4 copy of the game in question- if they want to make mods using assets found in the DLC, they will need to purchase a copy of that DLC too. Mods will be downloaded via a BNet account from a main menu option.

No mods will come preinstalled on, say, retail copies of The Elder Scrolls Skyrim: Special Edition, since mods are entirely handled by users, from creation to uploading to downloading and activating. On the whole, while this sounds a whole lot more restrictive than it would be on the Xbox One and PC, at least PS4 users are getting something. I suppose there’s that, at least.
