A total of three new 2DS XL systems will be launching in Japan this summer, but the Minecraft-themed one stands out.

Three new Nintendo 2DS XL consoles will be launching in Japan this summer, and while they’re all great to look at, the most significant one is the Minecraft creeper edition. The other two editions include the Mario Kart 7 inspired system which will come as part of the Mario Kart 7 bundle, and an Animal Crossing edition.

What’s significant about the Minecraft edition of the 2DS XL is that it attests to the strong relationship between Nintendo and the company which owns Minecraft, which is none other than Microsoft (who own Minecraft developers Mojang). After all, both companies have been working together to support cross-platform play with games like Minecraft and Fortnite. However, the Nintendo 3DS version of Minecraft will not feature cross-platform play, and this seems to just be a display of goodwill toward Microsoft. It looks like the partnership between these two companies is only going to get stronger from here on out.

You can check out images of the new 2DS XL systems below. As of now, we do not know whether these systems will be releasing outside of Japan.

Do not go gentle into that good night.

Though Nintendo had plenty of announcements for the Switch at E3 2017 compared to the 3DS, it still has plans to support the handheld for a long time.

As per Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime when speaking to IGN, “We’re going to continue to bring new content, and that’s what’s going to keep this device vibrant and keep it going well into 2018 and beyond.”

This is further reflected in the upcoming Nintendo 2DS XL which is more of a “form faction innovation” and which will drive more growth for the platform. The Switch for Nintendo is primarily seen as a home console. “We say that it’s a home console that you take with you and play with anyone, anywhere, anytime.

“But look, in the end, what we want is we want the consumer to call it their device, right? Their preferred gaming device that they can play fantastic Zelda, Mario, third-party content, all of their favourite franchises brought to life on the platform. That’s what we want. And we’re greedy and we want Nintendo 3DS right alongside it.”

While the Nintendo 2DS XL is out on July 28th, games like Ever Oasis, Hey, Pikmin!, Metroid: Samus Returns, Pokemon Gold and Silver will be releasing in the coming months.
