Some tight and mechanically rewarding skateboarding action is headed to the Switch next month.

OlliOlli and OlliOlli 2, from Roll7, are modern day skateboarding game classics. They’re tightly designed, mechanically rewarding, and feature fantastic level design. They bring to life a modern day interpretation of the classic Tony Hawk games, albeit in 2D, and also feature some tight platforming style action.

And now, both games are coming to the Switch, which is at this point a haven for indie games and indie game developers. Roll7 have announced OlliOlli: Switch Stance, which will be bringing OlliOlli and OlliOlli 2: Welcome to Olliwood to the Switch. And you won’t have to wait long for the games to launch on the hybrid either—it’s out next month.

OlliOlli games are bound to find a great home on the Switch—as already mentioned, the platform is extremely profitable for indie game developers, and the retro aesthetic paired with the tight platforming style mechanical finesse is bound to appeal to the Nintendo audience. OlliOlli and its sequel are currently out on PS4, PS Vita, Xbox One, and PC; the original game is also available on Wii U.

It begins.

Nintendo is slowly but surely coming around to the Cross Buy craze. After announcing that the upcoming Mario vs Donkey Kong game would be Cross Buy across the Wii U and 3DS earlier this year, it appears that we now have the first third party Cross Buy game for Nintendo platforms too- it will be the upcoming OlliOlli, the sidescrolling skateboarding platforming game that it PS Vita, PlayStation 4, and PC to general acclaim last year.

OlliOlli is due out on Wii U, Nintendo 3DS, and Xbox One in March (around the same time as the sequel will be hitting PS Vita and PS4, actually), and it looks like Roll7, recognizing that the port is after all a year late, has decided to sweeten the pot a bit.

It remains to be seen how Cross Buy will work here, though- Nintendo had previously announced that for Mario vs Donkey Kong, you would get a download code for the other version upon buying the first version. Whether OlliOlli uses the same system, or is automatically added to your account across both platforms, remains to be seen.

Get ready for some sweet skating action.

OlliOlli 2, the long awaited sequel to last year’s stylish sidescrolling skateboarding platformer game from Roll7, finally has a release date- the studio announced that it will be launching for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita on March 3.

The new game will include split and hidden routes, a four-player local multiplayer mode and new combos; in addition, it has also been confirmed that it will be Cross Buy (meaning that buying it once makes it accessible on all PlayStation platforms that it is available on), and Cross Save, meaning that your progress carries over from version to version- so you can easily pick up your Vita on the commute, and continue playing from where you left off at home on your PS4.

If you’re not a PlayStation owner, but still want in on the OlliOlli action, never fear, because the original game (which is already available on PC) will be coming to Wii U, 3DS, and Xbox One as well, so maybe look into getting that.

Releasing on PS4 and PS Vita later this year.

Roll7, the folks who brought us the excellent skateboard platforming game last year, OlliOlli (and who will also be working on giving us the sequel, when it launches exclusively on Vita soon), have announced that their next project, Not A Hero, will be launching on PC in May this year; they have also assured us that a release for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita, the platforms on which they after all made a name for themselves, will be following shortly afterwards.

Not A Hero stars Steve, a professional assassin/campaign manager, who is charged with cleaning up his city of ‘morally dubious folks.’ You can check out how it plays for yourself with the gameplay video above.

Not A Hero will be launching on PC via Steam, GoG, and the Humble Store on May 7. Stay tuned to GamingBolt for further coverage, news and information on the game as we near its release.

Grind those rails some time in March.

Last year’s hit sidescrolling skateboarding game, OlliOlli, which had already made waves on PlayStation Vita, PlayStation 4, and PC, had been announced to be coming to Xbox One, Wii U, and Nintendo 3DS this year. But if you have been eagerly waiting for it to show up already so you can start enjoying some skateboarding action, we finally have a better idea of its release date- OlliOlli will be launching on these platforms sometime in mid-March.

Roll7’s Simon Bennett commented, “We’re really glad that Xbox and Nintendo players finally have a version of OlliOlli to call their own. We’ve always seen OlliOlli as a game for everyone and with Curve’s versions, now it totally can be.”

For more on OlliOlli, check out GamingBolt’s past coverage of the game, including our official review for it. We enjoyed it then, and we have a feeling we will enjoy it now when it goes live on Xbox and Nintendo.

The most addictive side-scrolling skater since Tony Hawk landed on GBA.

OlliOlli, the unconventional indie hit title from the London based developers Roll7 and General Arcade, which found fame and popularity on the PS Vita, PS3 and PS4 is rolling backwards to cover any ground that it may have missed when it first launched earlier this year. The game is set to make the jump (pun intended) to the Xbox One, Wii U and Nintendo 3DS early next year.

While the game established a player base on the Sony platforms, it’s most influential audience was arguably that of the PC gaming community that brought the autorunner into the public eye via “lets plays”.

According the the Wii U, 3DS and Xbox One teaser trailer, the game is being brought to the platforms “just because you asked nicely”. It’s all in response to fan feedback and requests like “can we play 3DS OlliOlli soon? Please?”

With all that being said, I recommend giving the game a bash. It’s fast, skill based and hugely addictive.

OlliOlli brings solid skating to the PC and is worth a look.

S ay what you will about the Playstation Vita, whether it’s your thing or not the device is an Indy powerhouse. OlliOlli was one of those games, at a point exclusive to the handheld. Harkening all the way back to the early 2000 era of skateboarding culture, OlliOlli took the spirit of Tony Hawk Pro Skater, and applied it to an endless runner mentality to get a perfectly bite sized shredder for the bus. Now making it’s way to Steam, OlliOlli can be had by all, though it bails out more than once in the transition.

The premise is basic, the execution however is anything but. A thorough tutorial guides you through the goals and controls of OlliOlli, The controls themselves are a major hurdle at first and demand both knowledge and muscle memory. They aren’t necessarily hard or confusing at the base level, just hard to become proficient with, especially when using the keyboard, which the game itself strongly advises against. Which controller you use is limited though, as the game doesn’t play nice with several popular controllers such as the Dualshock 4.

" You’ll mainly be working out the stick in OlliOlli as it’s manipulated in all kinds of ways to go anywhere from an olli to the most hardcore 720 backside noseplant

"

Plug in a controller though, and the game relies on the shoulder buttons, left stick and a single face button. You’ll mainly be working out the stick in OlliOlli as it’s manipulated in all kinds of ways to go anywhere from an olli to the most hardcore 720 backside noseplant, while the shoulder buttons allow you to put some spin on a jump for extra points and the face button is key to land without eating concrete, as the closer to the ground you tap it the more points you gain or lose from your combo.

It’s the combo heavy gameplay where OlliOlli really channels the birdman’s earlier work. While you can get away with random wiggles of the stick to chain basic combos, you’ll need more finesse in order to get the astronomical scores the bonus objectives demand. An expansive “tricktionary” can be perused before any attempt that spells out the exact motions required for a trick. While not nearly as many buttons are in play as the pro skaters were ever asked to use, input is just as demanding.

Mastering those tricks takes plenty of iteration, which thankfully plays to the style of the game. Levels have five goals a piece, usually spread out into several categories, such as asking you hit a certain combo or score. Ideally, you’ll hit at least one of those goals in the run of a level, which plays much like an endless runner, though levels do have a definitive end. Should you fail to hit any of the goals at all, you’ll still be able to proceed. The main benefit of completing the objectives before you is to unlock “pro” variations of levels, which turn the original levels and goals up to eleven. Sweeping those goals unlocks the super tough “Rad” mode to raise the steaks even more.

" The visuals of the title aren’t exactly demanding by any definition, yet the game seems to pitch a fit on Windows 8.1 and refuse to render anything beyond the opening credits.

"

The game’s presentation is inoffensive. Not exactly great, not exactly eye bleeding, just fine. The game importantly maintains it’s framerate constantly, and it’s immediately obvious what you can interact with as you zoom through the level. The art style itself is reminiscent of most 16 bit titles, and brings us back to ‘simply inoffensive’.

The soundtrack is generic and almost completely forgettable, comprised of semi intelligible rapping beats and a handful of guitar riffs for good measure. it fits the mood, and though it could have benefited a lot from some licensed tracks, it’s completely understandable why an independent developer couldn’t make that happen.

So given the difficulty curve is really as steep as you want it, what is really in the way of jumping on the board and skating? As mentioned earlier, a controller is almost necessary to make the game playable, and not all controllers play nice in all ways. I reviewed the game using a plugged in Dualshock 3, but only because it wouldn’t function over Bluetooth, and the Dualshock 4 wouldn’t work at all. The visuals of the title aren’t exactly demanding by any definition, yet the game seems to pitch a fit on Windows 8 and refuse to render anything beyond the opening credits. Only two complaints overall, but they are major and should be considered before buying.

" Those willing to tackle it’s challenges head on will find a ton of value here, they should just be prepared for a style of game that doesn’t mesh as well with the platform

"

OlliOlli takes old ideas and applies them to new thinking. It doesn’t exactly make the jump to PC without a few face plants and wipeouts both small and large, it’s overall still very enjoyable for the right mindset.

Those willing to tackle it’s challenges head on will find a ton of value here, they should just be prepared for a style of game that doesn’t mesh as well with the platform and be aware of some very persistant and serious issues depending on equipment and operating system. Get past it and you’ll find a highly addictive, score chaser that will give you whatever you put into it.

Owner and Director of Roll7 Ltd, Simon Bennett gives us the low down on OlliOlli.

OlliOlli is a skateboarding video game that was originally released earlier this year for the PlayStation Vita. The game will now be making its way to PC, MAC and Linux platforms next week followed by the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 versions in mid August. GamingBolt got in touch with Simon Bennett who is the owner of Roll7 Ltd, the developers of OlliOlli. We were able to ask Simon a variety of questions ranging from the lack of Xbox One version to an unannounced project they are working on. Check out Simon’s response below.

Rashid Sayed: OlliOlli will release or is already available on all major platforms. Is there a specific reason why you guys are skipping the Xbox One for now?

Simon Bennett: Never say never I guess! TBH it just wasn’t a priority, Sony have supported us on VITA then again on PS4 so we have been busy getting those working super tight before thinking about anything else. Now they are finished though – definitely watch this space!

Rashid Sayed: OlliOlli is almost synonymous with PlayStation. What is it about Sony that appeals to you or rather any popular indie developer these days?

Simon Bennett: I think that their approach has been so open and honest – we were given time in front of Shahid Ahmad when we had the most basic prototype on IOS. The support and terms they are offering are with a view to creating an eco system of ‘Sony first content’, I think we will see a number of studios that go on to be industry leaders as a result of early support from their strategic content teams in SCEE and SCEA.

With the PS4 they made a commitment to gaming, as opposed to other entertainment media – that really resonates with indies. Their Vita and PS4 consoles are amazing gaming devices first and foremost, throw in Vita TV and PlayStation Now and you pretty much have gaming covered!

"Both PS3 and PS4 versions are straight ports, the team have been working on fixing a fatal bug that existed in the Vita version – plus adding leaderboards."

Rashid Sayed: How will the PS4 version of OlliOlli differ from the PS3 SKU?

Simon Bennett: Both PS3 and PS4 versions are straight ports, the team have been working on fixing a fatal bug that existed in the Vita version – plus adding leaderboards. The rest of the Roll7 team have been working on an as yet unannounced project – it has been quite hard to keep a lid on it, everyone is SO hyped.

Rashid Sayed: Are you guys going to support cross save and cross buy?

Simon Bennett: Both Cross Save and Cross Buy – yep! Everyone that went out and bought the Vita version (which was tens of thousands more than expected btw) deserves to play it for free on their home console – it really does feel amazing on the Dual Shock 4.

Rashid Sayed: As someone who has worked across PCs and PlayStations, what is the one unique feature about that the PlayStation 4 that you appreciate the most?

Simon Bennett: This gen is all about sharing, we are super excited about the share button, and the difference that will make to score attack games like OlliOlli. We are really hoping to take advantage of this for our next title!

Rashid Sayed: What can you tell us about the release date of the PlayStation 4?

Simon Bennett: PS4 version we are hoping for a Mid August release, we are currently in submission – so a lot depends on this running smoothly!

"The PC ports to PC, Mac and Linux are FINISHED - the game is hitting steam on Tuesday 22nd July (my Birthday!). We worked with General Arcade based in Singapore – they have done an amazing job – above and beyond!"

Rashid Sayed: What are your thoughts about the PS4 API? Do you think it will improve during the console cycle?

Simon Bennett: I think its fair to say that the API is pretty strong, its far more straight forward than the Vita version – which is nice. Sony have been super forthcoming with developers around the API and implementation. I guess their biggest push was to get Unity and GameMaker integrated, which will be a big hand to smaller studios. We are actually using PhyreEngine on an unannounced title at the moment – with Sony’s direct support – it is great!

Rashid Sayed: How is the PC port coming along?

Simon Bennett: The PC ports to PC, Mac and Linux are FINISHED – the game is hitting steam on Tuesday 22nd July (my Birthday!). We worked with General Arcade based in Singapore – they have done an amazing job – above and beyond!

Rashid Sayed: What can you tell us about the PS4’s GPU? Is it powerful enough to last an entire generation, especially when PC GPUs are growing at a ridiculously fast rate?

Simon Bennett: I guess that all depends on how hard Developers are willing to push GPUs over the generation. It’s a pretty beasty processor – I reckon it will hold its own.

Rashid Sayed: What are your thoughts on the current resolution and frame rate debate? What do you personally prefer…a solid frame rate or a higher resolution?

Simon Bennett: Always start with a Solid frame rate, gameplay is king! Then push for resolution second. To be honest if you tested people on this kind of stuff – 99% of people would probably not spot the difference! Like MP3s / CD / Super Audio CDs.

Rashid Sayed: Furthermore, will OlliOlii run at 1080p and 60fps on the PS4?

Simon Bennett: Indeed it will! OlliOlli doesn’t really push the PS4 – but it does look gorgeous on a massive screen.

Rashid Sayed: Is there anything else you want to tell us about OlliOlli before we take off?

Simon Bennett: OlliOlli will be hitting Steam on the 22nd July 2014, then PS3 and PS4 mid August. For Vita owners, we finally bring you what you asked for – Leaderboard patch is coming in a couple of weeks! Keep an eye on www.roll7.co.uk and follow us @roll_7 for the latest news on OlliOlli and our latest title Not A Hero.

The Director at Roll7 gives his thoughts about the PlayStation 4 and Sony's help in understanding the console's API.

Sony have been secretive regarding the actual specifications of the PlayStation 4. There are many parameters that Sony haven’t revealed publicly and it looks like that won’t change in the future. However with the advent of modern GPU processors for gaming PCs, what does it tell about the PS4 GPU?

Speaking to Simon Bennett, who is the Director at Roll7 Ltd, GamingBolt posed the same question. “I guess that all depends on how hard developers are willing to push GPUs over the generation,” Simon said. “It’s a pretty beasty processor – I reckon it will hold its own.”

And what are his thoughts on the PlayStation 4 API and Sony’s support for third party developers in its implementation. “I think its fair to say that the API is pretty strong, it’s far more straight forward than the Vita version – which is nice. Sony have been super forthcoming with developers around the API and implementation. I guess their biggest push was to get Unity and GameMaker integrated, which will be a big hand to smaller studios. We are actually using PhyreEngine on an unannounced title at the moment – with Sony’s direct support – it is great!”

Roll7 have currently finished worked on the PC version of OlliOlli which you can be pre-order on Steam.
