The studio previously helped with development on Dragon Quest 11: Echoes of an Elusive Age and Bandai Namco's Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown.

Square Enix’s Dragon Quest 12: The Flames of Fate is going to be fairly big, at least according to series creator Yuji Horii. It was already revealed that HexaDrive (The 3rd Birthday, Rez Infinite) would be helping with development but Orca, which co-developed Dragon Quest 11: Echoes of an Elusive Age and Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown, is also onboard.

The developer revealed that it’s recruiting for Unreal Engine 5 development staff to work on the role-playing game along with unannounced UE-developed game content. Available positions include Character Artist, Animator, Rendering Programmer, User Interface Artist and much more. While the extent of Orca’s involvement is unknown, this at least indicates that the title will be on a larger scale than its predecessor.

Dragon Quest 12: The Flames of Fate is currently slated to launch worldwide but doesn’t have a release date or confirmed platforms at this point. Its battle system has been “completely renewed” though and the story is already finished, though the developer will take some time to implement it. Stay tuned for more details in the coming months.

Sometimes, actions do speak louder than words.

News broke yesterday, citing unnamed but well placed sources at EA, that the open world Star Wars game under development at EA Vancouver had been canceled. Coming on the heels of two troubled Star Wars releases, and not much else, this seemed to be further evidence of EA not being quite fit for handling a license as big as Star Wars by itself.

However, in a statement that the publisher released to Variety, EA reiterated its commitment to making Star Wars games, citing this year’s upcoming Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order as proof. Notably, the statement does not deny the reports that EA Vancouver’s game is canceled (though it does label them as speculation)

“There’s been speculation overnight about one of our ‘Star Wars’ projects. As a natural part of the creative process, the great work by our team in Vancouver continues and will evolve into future ‘Star Wars’ content and games,” says EA’s statement. “We’re fully committed to making more ‘Star Wars’ games, we’re very excited about ‘Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order’ from Respawn, and we’ll share more about our new projects when the time is right.”

This does seem to line up with the reports yesterday stating that EA is repurposing what EA Vancouver was working on into a new, smaller scale project. I just hope that eventually, we’ll see the quality and quantity of Star Wars games that we all hope for—from EA, or otherwise.

Dragon Quest 10 also announced for PS4 and NX.

Following a leak of its logo, Dragon Quest 11 has been officially announced by Square Enix during a conference today in Japan and is perhaps the first game to have been formally confirmed for Nintendo’s NX platform. It is also scheduled to release on PS4 and Nintendo 3DS.

Square Enix also revealed that Dragon Quest 10 would be releasing on PS4 and NX having already been released on the Wii and Wii U.

Dragon Quest 11 will be developed by Square Enix and Orca on Unreal Engine 4 and the console version will apparently be in the same style as Dragon Quest 8. The 3DS version will have two different viewing modes with the top screen showing 3D battles and the bottom showing 2D sprites.

Here’s where things get interesting. Square Enix told Eurogamer that with regards to a Western release, “We don’t have a concrete plan at the moment. However, we will consider it as we’ve done in the past for other Dragon Quest titles.”

The publisher also told GameSpot that the NX releases are ““under consideration”. Odd, to say the least. Stay tuned for more information in the coming weeks.
