Players with subscriptions for game streaming services still spend more on games on average than non-subscribers.

With the advent of the likes of PlayStation Now, Xbox Game Pass, and EA Origin Access, it’s clear that Netflix-style game streaming subscription services are growing in popularity, and are going to continue to grow. Many have claimed that such services might result in lower sales for games, or just less money spent on games in general, but according to a new report by SuperData, that doesn’t seem to be the case.

According to SuperData, consumers in the US who have subscriptions to such services are, on average, still spending 45 per cent more money on games than those without subscriptions do, while they’re also spending more than twice as much on in-game content. Average monthly spending on games for subscribers in the US stands at $57.15, while the same for non-subscribers is at $39.21.

“Subscribers still spend an average of 45% more on full-priced games than non-subscribers,” the report reads. “Gaming subscription appeals to devoted fans who spend heavily on their hobby. Since more casual players already have ample access to free-to-play content, getting this segment of the audience to pay a regular monthly fee for games is a harder sell.”

Meanwhile, subscribers spend an average of $25.18 per month on in-game content, as opposed to $10.36 spent by non-subscribers. Character skins and cosmetics seem to be the most popular, with 37% of all subscribers purchasing these, with season passes following behind at 30%. Meanwhile, story-based DLC packs are in sixth place, purchased by 25% of all subscribers, behind map packs at 26%.

“Subscribers spend $25 a month on in-game content such as season passes, battle passes, cosmetic items and story-based content,” the report reads. “As subscribers gain access to a large collection of games, they are more likely to play them, and in turn purchase more in-game content.”

The report also states that top subscription services amounted for 6% of the overall premium PC and console revenue in the US in Q3 2018, with a quarterly revenue of $273 million. PlayStation Now made up for 52% of this revenue, followed by 16% for EA Access, EA’s Xbox One-exclusive subscription service. Xbox Game Pass is at 15%, followed by Origin Access Premier and Origin Access at 9% and 8% respectively.

After announcing that Burnout Paradise Remastered would be coming to PC next week, Electronic Arts has also confirmed that the game is available for Origin Access Premier this month. The Big Surf Island DLC is also included with it and in fact, those with an Origin Access Premier subscription can play it right now.

For those with regular Origin Access, there are a number of quality releases to look forward to. Zoink’s Fe, another title in the EA Originals program, will also be available. Though it’s not the most compelling platforming adventure game, it still boasts a nice aesthetic and pleasing atmospherics. Other titles including Hover, Ghost of a Tale, Mr. Shifty, Pillars of the Earth, Punch Club, Splasher, and Figment are also confirmed to be included in Origin Access for this month.

Origin Access costs $4.99 per month or $29.99 per year, while Origin Access Premier is $20 per month and $130 per year. The latter is costlier, but offers instant access to new EA titles like the upcoming Battlefield 5, Anthem, FIFA 19, and more. In fact, you can even play them in full earlier.

Along with the benefits of Origin Access, Premier provides access to titles like Anthem before launch.

Electronic Arts’ premium version of Origin Access, which was announced at E3 2018, is available now on PC. Origin Access Premier retails for $15 per month and $100 per year, compared to the $5 per month and $30 per year subscription of Origin Access “Basic”.

Origin Access has offered a number of benefits to subscribers till now. Along with discounts on digital content available in the Origin Store, it also provided early access trials to new games five days before they launched worldwide. Subscribers also have access to the Vault, which contains over 100 games from EA and other studios, available for unlimited play (as long as you’re subscribed, that is).

Origin Access Premier has all of this, but also provides early, unlimited access to new games like Anthem, Madden NFL 19, FIFA 19, and Battlefield 5 Deluxe before they launch. You’re essentially playing these games early and having full access to them while a subscription is active, not unlike Xbox Game Pass (which has all Xbox One exclusives available from launch day).

The service will allow early access to upcoming new releases like Battlefield 5 and Anthem.

In a recent conference call with investors, Electronic Arts announced that its new subscription-based Origin Access Premier service would be going live on July 30th. The service will cost $14.99 per month or $100 per year.

Origin Access in its current form will be called “Basic” while maintaining many of the same features, including early trials for upcoming games, The Vault, and a 10 percent discount on Origin Store content. Origin Access Premier will up the ante further by offering all of this along with access to all previous EA games. If you’re not interested in waiting for previous EA games to hit the Vault several months later, then this might be for you.

EA CFO Blake Jorgensen stated, “We do know from our EA Access experience and our Origin Access experience for non-frontline titles that we find people play twice as many games for twice as long and spend twice as much money as they did outside, or before they joined the subscription. That’s what led us to believe that frontline titles would be also very advantageous to the subscription, as well as help drive new users into the system.”

The subscription’s biggest advantage is early access to upcoming new releases like Madden NFL 19, FIFA 19, Battlefield 5 and Anthem. These “frontline” games can be played five days before their official release dates. Those who already have Origin Access will receive an option to upgrade, but more information is still to come. Check out the EA Help page to learn more about Origin Access Premier.

There's a hefty fee to enjoy Origin Access Premier for one year.

Along with hosting perhaps one of the lesser E3 pressers in recent memory, Electronic Arts announced two very interesting things. One of these was Origin Access Premier, an add-on to the basic subscription which will cost $15 per month and $100 per year. Along with the Vault, full of dozens of games from EA and third party studios, it also provides discounts on digital content, early trials and more.

However, it also enables subscribers to play certain games earlier than launch. Such games will include Anthem, Battlefield 5, Madden NFL 19 and FIFA 19. The other interesting announcement was that of a game streaming service, separate from Origin Access, that was also in the works. No additional information was provided however.

If you want a taste of Origin Access, then sign up for the free trial now – it’s active from now until June 17th. Otherwise, you can check out GamingBolt’s impressions of EA Play 2018, from the highlights to the lowlights.

Electronic Arts’ premium services like EA Access and Origin Access have been doing incredibly well on Xbox One and PC respectively. However, the publisher is looking to take things even further with the announcement of Origin Access Premier. Releasing for PC later this Summer, the service will allow access to the Vault, bringing over 100 games from numerous EA franchises and third party studios.

However, perhaps the biggest difference is the presence of games like Madden NFL 19 (which sees the series returning to PC), FIFA 19, Battlefield 5 and Anthem. EA has indicated that, somewhat unlike Xbox Game Pass, subscribers will be able to play these games before they launch worldwide.

More details are to be offered, including the pricing and when exactly it will go live. EA promises more information in the coming months but it’s definitely an enticing offer for those who game mostly on PC. Will a similar offer come to EA Access on Xbox One down the line? Stay tuned for more information.
