Business & Product Development Director at Nordic Games, Reinhard Pollice stated that, “With previous releases of Painkiller Hell & Damnation DLCs we got tons of feedback and fans asking for more content. We always want our players to be fully challenged, so with this DLC we have decided to concentrate on the multiplayer elements of the game to give them a truly immersive, hellish experience.”

There will be three classic multiplayer maps and new gameplay options like Meatless, Blink and Mines for the different modes. There will also be a new Survival Mode where players fight with limited ammo and avoid death until proceeding to the next area.

The new maps include Town (Survival) and Prison (all multiplayer modes), along with the new SS Zombie and Leper multiplayer skins. New enemies include the Executioner and Beast, with a new multiplayer weapon, the Mine.

You can now also pick up a new power-up throughout the levels that allows you to dual-wield weapons for a limited time, 3 brand new enemy types, new environmental weapon and a new tarot card that leeches health from enemies when the damage is dealt, it’s called Health Stealer.

The Clock Strikes Meat Night also expands both the single-player and co-op mode. New secrets areas, actions, usable mechanisms and more enemy variations throughout the game.  Painkiller’s trademark was always about killing tons of undead monsters in demonic like environments, if this is what you enjoy then you will be quite happy with this DLC pack, especially considering this is the first single-player DLC the game has received.

The Content

The very first level in The Clock Strikes Meat Night DLC is called Town. Town is a very basic and linear level, with a lot of burning wood, broken down buildings and of course hordes of enemies that throw meat pieces in your face until you die. Town is a remake of  the original Painkiller level, it’s rearranged and spawns additional enemies like the Templars.

The level took me about 15 minutes to beat on Insomniac difficulty and this is without exploring, or trying 100% achieve all the secrets, souls, ammo packs and so on. The new environmental weapon is called Meat Mine, it can be activated by using your Soul Charger weapon on Leaper’s head, once the head is charged it explodes.

My favorite level from this DLC pack is definitively the Aslyum. The combat soundtrack is great and I love the theme of it, it’s a perfect fit for a horror movie. Your in an outdoor area, with a tunnel underneath that leads into the mansion that you see in front of you when the player begins the level. Spooky atmosphere, eerie ambient sounds, and a combat soundtrack that’s a mix of a metal, rock and a little bit of techno is a great adrenaline pump.

The best part of this level is when your faced with the maze mirrors, each mirror teleports you to different areas with enemies and your objective is to find the one that spawns you outside the mansion. When you finally find the correct mirror  you will spawn outside and fight a horde of enemies, it’s a fantastic way to end the level. The maze mirrors is the brand new additional part to this level that did not exist in the original game. I had so much fun with this level that I didn’t want it to end.

Thankfully though the level took me about 26 minutes just by playing it from point A to point B till the end without looking for secret areas, or trying to collect everything. It would probably take you a good hour or more if you’re playing this on the hardest possible difficulty and trying to find everything.

Last but not least is the Bridge level. Bridge is another single-player map that has been expanded. It adds a boss fight, a winter town from the World War II era and 2 new gameplay elements such as the cart-chase and cable railway. Overall though this level wasn’t as enjoyable as the first two. I personally never liked winter themed levels, or train railroads for that matter, so maybe it’s just me. The only fun part for me in this level was the addition of the winter town and the new ninja monks enemies that were fun to kill.

Overall The Clock Strikes Meat Night DLC is a great edition for the first pack that adds single-player content for Painkiller: Hell and Damnation. Nordic Games and Farm 51 are promising 5 more downloadable content packs before end of the year. I am looking forward too see what else they can come up with, I personally think there is a lot of great potential for this game, especially in the downloadable content realm.

If you’re a completionist and love this game and hungry for more zombie and demon slaying, then I would definitely recommend you pick up The Clock Strikes Meat Night. It’s has a good price, decent amount of content for what it’s worth and makes the single-player and co-op gameplay more meatier than it already is.

Nordic Games has announced that the first multiplayer DLC pack for Painkiller: Hell & Damnation, called “Medieval Horror DLC”, is now available for download via Steam.

The DLC adds a few new things, such as three new multiplayer maps, new skins and new bosses. You can purchase it for £3.49.

If you’re new to the series, this is a perfect jumping in point and won’t look or feel dated. If you’re returning to this series, it’s so much better than you could possibly remember,” wrote our author John.

“You could be satisfied if you only set your multiplayer to basic levels but you’ll be doing yourself, the game, and other players a disservice to stick to the basic levels.”

The game is coming out on October 31st, so that is tomorrow. So what are you waiting for? The game is awesome, so go and buy it when it comes out on Steam.

There wasn’t one aspect of this game that wasn’t overlooked when updating this game. Heck, the HD could have just stood for High Definition, but true to their style, it stands for Hell & Damnation. And when you’re dealing with hell, the undead, and Daniel Garner, stuck in Purgatory, the title is all more fitting.

The game is now powered by the Unreal 3 Engine, and the lighting alone is top notch. The lighting really adds depth to levels like the graveyard and certainly helps add to the dark feel of the game. When playing you can’t help but compare the style to Darksiders, and with dealing with hell, it seems most artists are on the same page. The only downside is that there are certain limitations to the Unreal Engine, but PKHD does a good job of side stepping those issues and keeps the consistency of Gears of War.

The biggest strides taken to PKHD goes to their multiplayer aspects. The category is broken down into Player versus Player (PvP), and Player versus Environment (PvE).Under PvP you have options for Duel, Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, and Capture the Flag. Under PvE, you get choices like Coop and Survival. Classic maps and HD maps are also included in the rounds. The basic maps are actually really good looking to begin with, and the lighting just pushes them past the basic run of the mill maps. When the strong lighting merges with the HD maps, you can easily get lost staring at the great art. This unfortunately might be good news for your enemies. While you’re busy taking in all the great scenery, they might be picking you off, unless they stop to admire the art too. It’s a vicious cycle that you and your enemies will now have to face. With same arsenal of weapons provided from campaign mode, you can be nearly unstoppable.

When comparing the basic levels to the HD levels, you can see the differences immediately. Although the lighting looks good on the basic levels, there seems to be more depth in the HD versions. The could have also just skimped and up rezzed the textures. Instead you can see there is a lot more rubble and debris added to the HD levels to break up the flat areas. Although the footprints are identical, there’s been so much changed, it’s worth spending some extra time looking around.

Priding them self on being a classic PvP, there is a list of Anti-Features that should be noted. With no kill-streak bonuses, airstrikes or suicide bombings, you can get away from the nonsense you have to endure from recent Call of Duty online play. This also includes no auto healing, no upgrades to weapons. Everyone starts and remains the same level when fighting. It goes back to the luck of the draw, and who can grab the better gun, armor and health faster. It’s a healthy reminder of when PvP used to be fair and fun.

Outside the Multiplayer, you still have a solid campaign to play through. PKHD combines the two classic Painkiller and Painkiller: Battle Out of Hell games to give you one giant experience in hell. There are fourteen levels with four bosses waiting to rip you apart. The weapons are completely unique, however they reminded me a little of Unreal Tournament weapons. Most weapons have primary and secondary fires, along with grenades makes you no match for any moving creature. The campaigns can also be played co-op with up to two players on either Lan or online.

In rebooting the series Nordic Games wanted to get as far away from the previous iterations as possible. They felt that outside forces have really waned over the last few years and have not only been inconsistent to the Painkiller world, but detrimental to the series. The brought The Farm 51 in to help them get the series back on track, and to say the least, The Farm 51 has answered the call. Their focus came down to the basics of speed, skill, knowledge and a huge body count.

The track is called Monkey Nation. To be honest, I am not a fan of such music, I like pleasant stuff, but its cool nonetheless, so check it out.

The game is an old school game requiring you to have fast reflexes and basically experience with such PC games from the 90s.
