Payday 2 developer Overkill Software raised some ire among previous gen owners of the game when it revealed that future updates would only be coming to the Xbox One and PS4 versions, which recently released. Fans had plenty of reason to be upset, seeing as how Payday 2 released roughly a year ago and Overkill took to addressing its focus on current gen hardware way back in February when it announced the Crimewave Edition.

Back then, “technical reasons” were cited as the main reason as “some of these consoles are almost a decade old. While trying to understand why we couldn’t develop more content, we learnt that they don’t have the fire power or memory to deal with 50 additional content updates that we have been developing for PAYDAY 2 after its release.”

Overkill further stated on Twitter recently that, “We know you’re pissed. And we hate it too.”

This was followed by the developer stating that, “We’re upset too, but it’s impossible to do.” Both tweets link back to the Steam Community post from February.

Sadly, it doesn’t seem like Overkill will be getting on the good side of consumers by not offering any cross-gen save transfers for previous gen owners. Stay tuned for more information on the same as the situation develops.

How does Overkill's 2015 port on current gen compare to the 2013 PC version?

Payday 2: Crimewave Edition is, as many would have guessed by now, a remastered edition of Payday 2 which released in August 2013. It collects the base game and all of its DLC together while refurbishing the visuals and presenting the co-op, heist simulator to current gen console owners. The fact that the Crimewave Edition hasn’t released for PC should be more than enough indication of the standard it should be adhering to. Do the current gen versions measure up to what the PC delivered roughly two years ago?

It should be noted that of all engines, Payday 2: Crimewave Edition is running on Diesel 2.0. This is the engine developed by the now defunct GRIN and saw usage in games like Terminator Salvation, Flatout, Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 1 and 2 (on PC only though) and the original Payday: The Heist. The overall presentation feels a bit odd at times, with the native 1080p resolution contrasting the uneven animation. One could talk about the overall template requiring improvement above all else but that would venture into remake rather than remastered territory.

Payday 2: Crimewave Edition features rendering quality similar to the original PC version. Both the PS4 and Xbox One versions run at a native 1920×1080 resolution and unlike the previous gen versions, there are plenty of post processing effects employed for smoother edges. There’s no full-fledged anti-aliasing solution here, with the Crimewave Edition instead relying on post-process anti-aliasing. While it removes a good amount of jaggies, the lack of a true AA solution dulls the impact of the 1080p presentation and makes it look less crisp than it should be.

Other than the lack of any real AA, both current gen versions resemble the PC version down to a T. The quality of assets is similar with Overkill Software employing the highest shadow resolution (though shadow edges aren’t as crisp as we would have liked), texture quality and alpha effects that the PC version could manage. Chromatic aberration and depth of field have been added to the PS4 and Xbox One, further bumping the visual quality up higher. As noted previously, both console versions are based off of the highest quality settings on PC. This means that assets are similar across both consoles. Even the geometry and texture detail are similar across all three platforms.

Of course, there are some differences. As has been the case for quite a number of third party releases, the Xbox One uses anisotropic filtering compared to the PS4 which employs an inferior, tri-linear filtering. This results in a lesser amount of details on textures and it’s quite odd at this point. When you look at current games like The Witcher 3, the difference in texture filtering for the PS4 and Xbox One is minimal. And that’s a huge open world action adventure title – such implementations shouldn’t be difficult for a co-op shooter like Payday 2: Crimewave Edition.

Interestingly, both versions of the game run at 30 frames per second. Overkill didn’t guarantee a 60 frames per second experience but at least locked the frame rate down to ensure better overall performance. For the most part, the frame rate remains solid throughout with no drops even when there’s a hefty amount of action on screen like explosions and excessive gunfire.

The asset streaming on PS4 and Xbox One is similar to the PC version but a bit slower. The environments, despite their initially bland design, contain more depth in the Crimewave Edition thanks to the lighting model’s high contest nature. There’s a bit of destructibility employed as well – windows shatter and cars blow up quite nicely. It doesn’t detract from the overall blandness of the environments but it does help decorate action-packed scenes better.

Is Payday 2 a better game with the Crimewave Edition? That depends on how much you liked the previous gen version. There aren’t a number of improvements or changes to the core mechanics. The offline AI is still pretty dense and incapable of carrying out basic orders. All the previously released DLC has been collected here and that’s a pretty good deal for those who want to try out Payday 2 for the first time.

However, when Overkill Software talked about upgrading the graphics, it meant in terms of how the PS4 and Xbox One would compare to the Xbox 360 and PS3. The overall visual quality is similar to the 2013 PC version and in some cases, it’s clearly inferior. Of course, even if you decided to try the PC version instead, you would have to buy all the DLC separately. Decisions, decisions.

However, Payday’s focus has never really been on the visuals and for the most part, if you’ve heard of the series then Payday 2: Crimewave Edition is as good of an entry into its gameplay as you’re going to get. There’s enough value in this package to appease co-op shooter fans though there are still plenty of areas where it could have been improved. Both console versions are inherently the same, right down to the locked 30 FPS and native 1080p resolution but the Xbox One version has better anisotropic filtering. Regardless of which console you purchase it on, you’ll still receive the same explosive experience.

Those who really want the best visual quality that Payday 2 is capable of delivering may want to go back to the PC version instead, if only because the appeal of a 60 FPS frame rate is appealing. However, when it comes to experiencing the core game and its numerous DLCs in one place at a single price, there’s no better solution than the Crimewave Edition.

Note: Bill Smith carried out the performance analysis.

Is Payday 2: Crimewave Edition just another HD cash grab?

Payday 2 is one of those rare cases in modern video games, where they require no deep or meaningful plot in order to prove it’s a worthwhile slice of entertainment. And why is it a rare case? Because the gameplay is truly solid. The original Payday took a simple idea, as well as a touch of inspiration from Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight, then it turned it in to something of sheer brilliance. Payday 2 excelled on everything that the original managed to achieve, and with the re-release making it’s debut on to the current generation of consoles with all previous additional content being included, there’s certainly a lot to look forward too.

Payday 2 has one single premise. Execute a grand mass of robberies and heists, in order to make your way up the ladder to the status of master criminal. These can range from anything to robbing a jewelry store or a more deadly scenarios such as a cracking the vault of a bank heist while fending off police, or waging war with mobsters over a meth lab. Where Payday 2 succeeds however, is not just in the variety of locations that’s on offer to perform grand theft. But in the amount of detail that goes in to the planning stages and the structure of the missions themselves.

" Execute a grand mass of robberies and heists, in order to make your way up the ladder to the status of master criminal. "

Nothing is or will ever be a simple break in and break out situation, making off with the cash without anybody knowing. It’s always going to be a crazy situation whether the player likes it or not. And they should, because that’s what makes the game so great. Presented before each and every mission players will be given a planning stage before entering the level.

This contains aspects of player customization and weapon loadouts as well as how they plan to execute the heist. This is where the game manages to immerse the player and it forces them to think carefully about their role and character class. Within the actual mission there will be certain objectives that must be undertaken before, during and after the mission. This is where the immersion factor plays a larger role and tricks the player in to thinking their in control. And if their not, well, they’ll learn to adjust.

Every mission feels like a heist gone wrong and that’s exactly how it’s supposed to feel, even when choosing the route of stealth. During a mission in which I was required to disassemble a bomb, while doing battle with the military forces that seeked to put an end to my demise, it didn’t become apparent to me as to just how much time I had sunk in to the mission until it actually ended.

"This contains aspects of player customization and weapon loadouts as well as how they plan to execute the heist."

It’s incredibly easy to lose track of time within the game, and since pressure and intensity are two things that play directly against the players mindset, it’s intimidating as it is entertaining. One minute I’m stealing paintings from an art gallery and the next, I’m lowering a hose in to a train wreck to secure the pressure of a bomb, so I can dismantle it in to multiple pieces and sell it to a contractor. Payday 2 knows how to take itself seriously while still making no sense whatsoever.

It’s genuine fun. Had the game been released in the 90s it would have been trading blows with Mortal Kombat and Grand Theft Auto, over which game influences the most bad behaviour in the teenage male demographic. Adding attention to detail outside of the missions is the design of the games actual menus. Everything holds the aesthetic of a blueprint or a map that the player will navigate through when assigning weapons, gadgets, or deciding where to plan their attack. It may be considered quite small to some, but it’s the fine attention to detail that goes a long way.

Since Payday 2 is at its best when being played online co-operatively, A.I. team mates are essentially useless outside of waving a gun. This means everything that requires an objective undertaking such as setting up a C4, picking a lock, or setting up a drill to crack a safe of a bank is all on the player. Going forward with the series, I would like to see a great deal of attention being placed on the A.I. team mates, as the simple commands that you’re able to instruct aren’t in anyway ideal nor beneficial for assisting in a heist.

"Since Payday 2 is at its best when being played online co-operatively, A.I. team mates are essentially useless outside of waving a gun."

While the single-player is without a doubt fun and engaging, it’s always a case of “I’m planning to steal $90,000 worth of jewelry, threaten the bystanders, and murder anyone who attempts to stop me. Oh yeah…these three idiots will be joining me.” In terms of gameplay, this is the only fault that players can expect from the game, but either way it’s still entertaining.

As it stands however, this is a HD remaster of Payday 2, which means the core gameplay remains the same. What’s new to this edition comes in the form of additional content that was formerly available to the PC. Where past HD remasters have only been given a visual overhaul with minor expansion packs barely worthy of the name, Payday 2: Crimewave Edition delivers on everything. With that being said, there’s nothing new here that PC players should be considering as this is strictly aimed for last-generation console players.

These new additions primarily consist of more heists, weapons, weapon modifications, masks, costumes, characters, and a skill tree. And while that may not sound like much on the surface, the breath of content that’s actually in the game could easily spawn in to its own standalone title. The game adds missions based on Dennaton Games’ Hotline Miami. Take a deep breath. And if that wasn’t enough, John Wick is also a playable character. Everything is better with Keanu Reeves.

"And if that wasn't enough, John Wick is also a playable character."

Where the game continues to standout as being something other than a High Definition heist isn’t just purely down to the amount of content though. It’s the way in which it has been changed in regards to mission structure. The pre-planning phase of the game which takes place before heading in to a mission, allows players to strategize and prepare themselves before hand, adding a new level of complexity to the overall gameplay.

This works well in practice and the fact that it’s added a new gameplay mechanic in the form of an update as opposed to doing so in a sequel, makes it all the more enjoyable. It’s the small iterations here that deserve some respect and it clearly demonstrates that the studio knows exactly what it’s doing with the game.

As said previously, characters now have a skill tree system. This means that the more you play the more you’ll earn. Literally. And not just in the way of cash. It gives players the ability to equip specialized perks, equipment, and character traits to their respectful class. As the game is heavily focused on co-operative play, gamers who take the game seriously will gain fulfillment in watching their character truly progress.

"This means that the more you play the more you'll earn."

Last on the list is the new contract systems that’s in place. Taking on missions set by crime-bosses and contractors adds a new level of dynamism to the game as it differs from the standard run of the mill heists. These contract missions have multiple stages to them, each with different objectives that can lead to random outcomes. When pulled off correctly it can feel rewarding, and it aids in further engaging the player in to its world.

Payday 2: Crimewave Edition is a vigorous, exciting, and heart-wrenching game. It delivers on everything that made the base version of the game so great to begin with, and it gives a compelling reason for its current-generation re-release. The only issue I had with the game was something that I hoped would be resolved, now that it’s on reasonably more powerful hardware. The frame rate.

A silky, smooth thirty frames-per-second. No, just no. Something has to be said over this Neverland fantasy of 1080p gaming for the current console generation. The fact that as journalists we’ve been inclined to bring it up in reviews and general news coverage so often, when it was barely mentioned in the generations prior means it is a big problem.

        "A silky, smooth thirty frames-per-second. "

1080p isn’t compelling, it’s a compromise. Had the developers dropped the resolution to 900p or such, which would have had no meaningful effect on the visuals anyway, and then ramped the frame-rate up to sixty, the game would have felt much more responsive and much more enjoyable. Payday 2 is a good looking game, but it isn’t at all graphically demanding.

It’s not necessarily a question of “Why is it running at thirty?” It’s more a question of “How is not running at sixty?” Payday has always felt like a PC game that console players where just lucky enough to receive. But the fact that it’s running at thirty as opposed to sixty is fairly disappointing.

It’s a worthy step-up from it’s last-gen iteration and I see no reason other than the obvious, to not recommend it to fans of the series. New heists, new mechanics, and new methods of character progression, Payday 2: Crimewave Edition is ludicrous enjoyment.

Prepare to get paid again...

Put on a mask, pick a gun, grab the cash, get back to the truck…If only it were that simple. Well then it wouldn’t be so interesting then, would it? Payday 2 is a game of many faces…no literally, there’s around a hundred different masks for the players to wear and an unforeseen amount of new ones being added, thanks to the upcoming release of the new Payday 2: Crimewave Edition. But that’s hardly all there is to the Payday series.

During the game’s lifespan on the previous generation of consoles, along with the PC community which is infact still active, the amount of additional updates and content being added to the game appeared to be strong enough for its community to remain interested and retain longevity. The key feature and selling point of the new Crimewave Edition appears to be centered around additional content, consisting of prior DLC, along with brand new updates and long-term support.

"While the key feature and selling point of the new Crimewave Edition appears to be centered around additional content, , consisting of prior DLC, along with brand new updates and long-term support."

Something which stood out to me the most during my experience with the game, was the incredible amount of emphasis being placed on player experience and customisation. And not just in the way of cosmetic qualities along the lines of masks and skins, but in terms of the gameplay itself. Player loadouts for example, a new skill tree has been added to the weapon system allowing for custom layouts and an enhanced progression system, in tandem with player perks.

Along with the new Fugitive class, this gives players the opportunity to kit-out their characters in a wide variety of ways, giving rise for new approaches to gameplay. Where the game extends upon customisation in regards to weapons, masks, and skins, comes in the form of different themes.

As opposed to the standard military-grade weapons approach, most common to other first-person-shooters, Payday does things differently. And while the standard shotguns, rifles, and handguns will also be receiving more variation, Payday 2: CE has taken things one step further with its melee weapons by taking inspiration from titles such as Left4Dead, Hotline Miami, and Dead Rising.

"Where the game extends upon customisation in regards to weapons, masks, and skins, comes in the form of different themes. "

What’s more interesting though and arguably the make or break question of the game, are the new heists missions. Extending the way contracts are undertaken, the game includes a new pre-planning phase giving players the opportunity to strategize more efficiently before going into a mission.

However, while this seemed to work well during my time with the game, as with all cooperative shooters and every other aspect of the game, this is highly reliant upon communication. Should the community that surrounds the game continue to support it with console players more specifically, making an upgrade to the next-gen versions, then this should be of no issue.

Where the game has been receiving attention in regards to its new characters, primarily the addition of female heister Clover. Characters from other mediums and pop culture such Keanu Reeve’s John Wick, will also be starring as playable characters. As to where he even fits in to the theme of the game is a mystery, but am I excited he is in it? It’s Keanu Reeves, so my bias is a given.

" Characters from other mediums and pop culture such Keanu Reeve's John Wick, will also be starring as playable characters."

What’s great about this new feature though, is that they’re not just skins on-top of existing characters, they’re actual additions to the game. Who we’ll be seeing in the future remains to be answered, but due to the focus being placed on supporting the game over a long-term and giving back to the game’s community, it’s something to look forward to. For those who enjoyed playing the game in single-player however, then my previous concerns over the original game remains the same.

For some players with myself included, the possibility of the single-player campaign becoming stale and dull, and frankly just losing steam before things really begin to become interesting, is a factor that one must consider when choosing to play solo. Not to mention concerns over A.I. as a key component of the game is reliant upon online teamwork.

Where I feel the game does well in particular, something that a good number of games fail to establish, lies within its identity and what it sets out to be. There’s an element of nonsensical fun that the game thrives upon, and while it does everything possible not to take itself seriously, it knows how to deliver a feeling of reward and player progression.

"Not to mention concerns over A.I. as a key component of the game is reliant upon online teamwork."

This comes in the form of loot, which is available upon completing a heist. Unlockable masks, equipment, weapon attachments and so on. All of which have an incredible amount for the player to choose from. Although gameplay mechanics remain primarily the same and it does well in extending upon the elements it’s good at, there appears to be enough additional content thrown in and upgrades to the core of the game, just to keep it interesting.

Increasing the pixel count to 1080p across both platforms and discussing the preferred frame rate which runs at thirty, isn’t going to be the justification of Payday2:CE. Where this has simply been the case for many games in the past, that did absolutely nothing worth speaking of to make it’s gameplay more interesting, or actually being seen as a worthwhile investment, Payday is different.

Online cooperative play has always been its focus, and from what I’ve played of the game so far there’s enough justification for it to be here. But whether it will last the distance is something that remains to be seen.

Payday 2: Crimewave Edition is out next month on PS4 and Xbox One.

Rockstar may have finally delivered heists in Grand Theft Auto Online and Visceral has included the same in Battlefield: Hardline but the purveyor of the heist genre, namely Overkill Software with its Payday franchise isn’t intimidated.

Producer Almir Listo spoke to VG247 and said that, “We’re not in a position any more where we have to be scared. We have our community and we know what they want and this just makes the heists genre more popular.

“I’m looking forward to GTA Heists on PC and seeing what Hardline has got. From our perspective we just welcome the challenge. Any competition can only make our game better. We will of course play their games and have a lot of fun and we’ll learn from them, what they did good and what they could have done better.”

Overkill is preparing Payday 2: Crimewave Edition for the Xbox One and PS4, and it knows that it has a built-in audience for heist-style gameplay. “Payday proved that there are players out there who love to experience that crime fantasy. That’s one of the reason why we’ve seen other heist games pop up. If anyone knows how difficult it is to make a great heist game it’s us so we wish them the best of luck.”

Payday 2: Crimewave Edition is out in June 2015 for PS4 and Xbox One.

More DLC and content will be on the way for the team-based heist simulator.

Overkill Software’s Payday 2 has been supported very well since its release in 2013 with both free and paid DLC added to the game. That support will continue into 2017 as the developer has announced a new deal with publisher 505 Games.

So if you’re wary about picking up the Crimewave Edition, releasing this June for PS4 and Xbox One, then you can rest assured that more content will be on the way as you transition to current gen consoles. Some of the additional content we’ve seen with Payday 2 includes new heists, masks, weapons and much more that have helped keep the game alive in the past few years.

Payday 2: Crimewave Edition will be packing all of the previously release DLC packs and include updated visuals overall. Will you be picking it up this June? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below and stay tuned for more information on new DLC packs and content in the coming months.

Producer Almir Listo talks about the current gen port and the possibility of Payday 3.

In this season of heists and robberies (among video games of course), it’s easy to forget about perhaps the most definitive heisting experience of the past several years – Overkill’s Payday 2. The game is returning this June as Payday 2: Crimewave Edition and will include add-ons and features from the PC version. The question remains though – will it be able to provide enough content to match up with Grand Theft Auto Online’s Heists? Will it provide enough incentive for previous gen players to heist on the Xbox One and PS4?

GamingBolt had a chance to speak to producer Almir Listo about the various graphical improvements, content and whether there is other content to look forward to aside from the add-on content.

"The reason why we aren’t developing PAYDAY 3 right now is because we’re not done with PAYDAY 2 yet. Making a game is hard, and many games that are made only realize a vertical slice of its actual potential."

Rashid K. Sayed: Let us get the obvious question out of the way. Why are you guys not developing Payday 3?

Almir Listo: Hey! Woah, right to the point! I like it! The reason why we aren’t developing PAYDAY 3 right now is because we’re not done with PAYDAY 2 yet. Making a game is hard, and many games that are made only realize a vertical slice of its actual potential. With PAYDAY 2, we released the game and have been continuing to modify it, adding free content and paid DLC since release.

More than 50 updates later, I think it’s safe to say that PAYDAY 2 today is something much more fun, interesting and challenging than it was at release. People bought our game and to honor their purchase, we want to give them as much content as we possibly can before moving on to the next project.

Rashid K. Sayed: Can you talk about the enhanced features and bonus content that the Crimewave Edition will offer?

Almir Listo: I can. The Crimewave Edition is going to be the ultimate heist experience on the next gen consoles. Both Xbox One and PlayStation 4 heisters will be able to play PAYDAY 2 with more content, more heists, characters, weapons and more. We’ve made technical updates as well – framerate is up, 1080p resolution, better textures and more. On day 1, plenty of DLC available on the PC is included in the Crimewave Edition for a very sweet deal. We hope our console community is as excited for this as we are.

Rashid K. Sayed: Other than the obvious jump in visuals, why should someone who has already played PayDay 2 buy the Crimewave Edition?

Almir Listo: The Crimewave Edition offers so much more than was previously available on the last generation of consoles. For those who are ready to make the transition to the new generation, our advice is to pick it up. We’re confident you won’t regret it.

Rashid K. Sayed: Can you share tech details about the engine in terms of number of simultaneous light sources, Parallax Occlusion Mapping etc?

Almir Listo: We’d rather keep it a secret for release.

"The Xbox One has many features that we’re excited for and that will make PAYDAY 2: Crimewave Edition an awesome game to play together with your crew."

Rashid K. Sayed: Along with the previously released DLC, what else can we expect to see from Crimewave Edition in terms of extra content? Will any of it fundamentally change the gameplay?

Almir Listo: We think that new heisters and old heisters alike want to try the original PAYDAY 2 experience. Therefore, we’ve made as few changes to the original formula that we could, focusing on making as much extra content available as possible.

Rashid K. Sayed: Although not explicitly marketed as such, Crimewave Edition is a remastered edition for the new consoles. Last year we saw The Last of Us Remastered on the PS4 and surprisingly it was a massive success but then it had a lot of marketing and hype behind it. Do you think there is a chance that the Crimewave Edition may backfire?

Almir Listo: No.

Rashid K. Sayed: Will you be able to confirm the resolution and frame rate that the PS4 and Xbox One versions are running at?

Almir Listo: Resolution will be 1080p and framerate will be as good as we can get it – we’re still in development and are currently performing tests to see how far we can take it.

Rashid K. Sayed: If you guys are not targeting 60 FPS, is there a specific reason behind the same?

Almir Listo: We’re trying to go as far we can. With every new platform, there are technical challenges that we need to address. We’re confident it’s going to be a smooth experience – heisters from the last generation will see the difference.

Rashid K. Sayed: The eSRAM is a known culprit that limits asset heavy games to run in full HD resolution on the Xbox One. How did you approach this situation while developing the Xbox One version?

Almir Listo: I can’t go into specifics, as with any new platform you develop a game to you’re bound to face new challenges. The Xbox One has many features that we’re excited for and that will make PAYDAY 2: Crimewave Edition an awesome game to play together with your crew.

"We’re focusing on the core experience of the first person shooter gameplay that makes PAYDAY 2 what it is. As I said earlier, our aim is to keep the core experience as close as possible to what people expect."

Rashid K. Sayed: Are you using the Xbox One Kinect or PS4’s touch pad in any way to further enhance gameplay mechanics?

Almir Listo: We’re focusing on the core experience of the first person shooter gameplay that makes PAYDAY 2 what it is. As I said earlier, our aim is to keep the core experience as close as possible to what people expect. If the Xbox One community think we should add something post release, we’ll definitely listen and see if it’s possible on our end.

Rashid K. Sayed: Out of interest, since 80% of Payday 2 sales were digital, are there any plans to have box releases for Payday 2: Crimewave Edition?

Almir Listo: We were humbled by the support from our digital heisters. PAYDAY 2: Crimewave Edition is going to have both a boxed and a digital release though.

Rashid K. Sayed: Like Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition, CrimewaveEdition won’t be out on PC. Wouldn’t updated visuals and a compilation style package appeal to PC gamers too?

Almir Listo: I think our PC community is doing just fine.

Rashid K. Sayed: Microsoft released the latest SDK update which has allowed developers to use extra CPU processing power. Are you planning to use that in the Xbox One version?

Almir Listo: As developers we’re excited with the new features that the Xbox One brings to the table. Any update for the SDK will most likely benefit us in one way or another.

Rashid K. Sayed: What is next for Starbreeze after Payday 2: Crimewave Edition? Payday 3, I suppose?

Almir Listo: Ha! You wish! Actually, we’re doing OVERKILL’s The Walking Dead together with Robert Kirkman and then we also have our sci-fi co-op FPS STORM down the line. We like to keep ourselves busy.

Continuing our coverage on Payday 2: Crimewave Edition, GamingBolt had the opportunity to ask a few questions to the Overkill Software’s producer Almir Listo. In our interview, we were able to ask a few questions revolving around the resolution and frame rate that Payday 2: Crimewave Edition will run on the PS4 and Xbox One.

It goes without saying that most shooters are expected to run at 1080p and 60 frames per second, so will Payday 2: Crimewave Edition follow the norm?

“Resolution will be 1080p and frame rate will be as good as we can get it – we’re still in development and are currently performing tests to see how far we can take it,” Almir said to GamingBolt. “We’re trying to go as far we can. With every new platform, there are technical challenges that we need to address.”

It will be interesting to see whether the developers will be able to deliver 60 frames per second or whether they will opt for an unlocked frame rate approach. Regardless, Almir think it will be a smooth experience compared to the original. “We’re confident it’s going to be a smooth experience – heisters from the last generation will see the difference.”

'The Xbox One has many features that we’re excited for.'

Earlier today it was announced that PAYDAY 2: Crimewave Edition will be hitting the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One this June and it will come loaded with a year of paid DLC for free. Accompanying this announcement, GamingBolt got the chance to speak to Almir Listo who is the Producer on PAYDAY 2.

Ever since the advent of current generation consoles, there has been some concern regarding how the Xbox One version of a multiplatform game will shape up. Multiplatform games on the Xbox One, for the most part have performed slightly inferior in the past and although the situation is improving, the problem still persists.

So how is Overkill managing things with the Xbox One version?

“I can’t go into specifics, as with any new platform you develop a game to you’re bound to face new challenges. The Xbox One has many features that we’re excited for and that will make PAYDAY 2: Crimewave Edition an awesome game to play together with your crew,” Almir said to GamingBolt.

It also seems they are utilizing Xbox One’s latest SDK update which allows developers to use extra CPU processing power. “As developers we’re excited with the new features that the Xbox One brings to the table. Any update for the SDK will most likely benefit us in one way or another,” he added.

Both the PS4 and Xbox One versions are already confirmed to be running at 1080p, so that’s a start. Do you plan to pick up the the remaster? I think you should given how solid the original was.
