Pixel Reef’s Paper Beast is one of the more aesthetically gorgeous VR titles available. But if you lack VR hardware, then there’s good news – the developer has announced Paper Beast: Folded Edition, which is playable without VR. It’s out on October 20th for PC via Steam and later for PS4.

Paper Beast sees the player venturing to a strange ecosystem where paper-like beings reign. Along with the different creatures, you’ll traverse the landscape and attempt to understand its various mysteries. This is done with physics-based gameplay and the world, along with its denizens, will respond accordingly.

One of the bigger selling points is that the title comes from Eric Chahi, who created adventure classics like Another World and Heart of Darkness. Along with an adventure mode, there’s also a sandbox mode for more free-form exploration. Check out the trailer below to see the game in action and stay tuned for more details in the coming weeks.

Developed Eric Chahi of Another World fame, Paper Beast takes place in a world made entirely of origami paper. Different lifeforms made of paper will accompany the player as they explore the world and attempt to uncover the “unknown power” that’s causing trouble. Along with exploration, players will also solve puzzles with the help of different creatures and their abilities.

Two modes will be available – Adventure, which consists of the story, and Sandbox, where the player can roam freely and experiment with the world. With a gorgeous art-style and unique mechanics, Paper Beast might be worth checking out for PC players. Stay tuned in the coming weeks for a release date.

Pixel Reef’s Paper Beast was expected to release this year but was announced to be delayed in PlayStation’s recent State of Play presentation. The good news is that the PlayStation VR title has received a new trailer, and is now expected to release in Q1 2020. Check out the trailer below.

Paper Beast is centered entirely on origami paper, which is to say that its flora and fauna are completely paper based. Players will rely on different paper-based creatures, evolving and progressing with you throughout the journey. It’s fairly surreal but also pretty gorgeous looking.

Given the work that’s going into it – the developer notes on PlayStation Blog that creature movement had to be calculated and change in tune with the player and environment – the delay is understandable. We’re looking forward to the final product especially in PlayStation VR. For non-VR owners, the PS4 version will be releasing at a later date so stay tuned for more information.

Pixel Reef, founded by the creator of the legendary Another World, Eric Chahi, have announced a new game in Paper Beast via the PlayStation Blog. The game will come as an exclusive to the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation VR, with the VR version coming some time this year and a version playable without need of the PlayStation VR later next year.

The game takes place in a server data where vast amounts of lost code and the ebbs and flow of the internet have created a living, breathing being in the Paper Beast. The art style invokes a similar one to the recent remaster of Another World, available across multiple platforms now, and promises a vast world fill with discovery and exploration. Chahi says the idea came from him, similar to how the idea for Another World did in 1991, and hopes the game shows a passion for creation, exploring, and technology.

“A few years ago, I was playing with physics in the Unity Engine with several cool new gameplay elements in mind,” wrote Chahi. “Notions of Big Data were swimming in my head. As you know, I’ve always enjoyed exploring new concepts and creative territories. That was my motivation when I created Another World back in 1991 on the Amiga.”
