You don't need expensive graphical effects in a VR game, says Anton Mikhailov.

Virtual Reality is a bit different when compared to conventional gaming mechanics. A developer needs to consider a lot of parameters while designing a VR headset. Whether it be depth of field, motion sickness or most importantly a higher fresh rate. It’s no secret that the PlayStation 4 has struggled to achieve 6ofps across all the games that have been released for the system till date and given that high refresh rate is of pivotal important for its upcoming VR Headset, it should be a challenge for the developers who plan to make resource heavy games for the device.

Sony’s R&D team member Anton Mikhailov believes that it’s very much possible to run games at 60fps on the upcoming PS4 VR Headset. A lot of visual effects like camera artefacts and film grain noise are not needed, saving a lot of processing power.

“The reality is that when you’re rendering VR, a lot of the details that traditionally get done in games like post-effects, motion blur – they’re not needed. Things like a lot of the lens effects, a lot of the distortions people do, they’re quite expensive to do in post. You don’t need those in VR, because you’re trying to make a more believable world. So a lot of what people do in current games are camera artefact effects – vignetting, film grain noise – so you save a lot of processing power there first of all,” he explained in an interview with EuroGamer.

He also explained that it will be possible to run 60 fps with stereo turned on, debunking the myth that it needs more processing power to run stereo. “There’s also another belief that people think it takes twice the power to render stereo – that’s not true because your physics, your AI, everything runs once when you’re rendering stereo, and a lot of the graphics even only run once. For example, shadow computations can be re-used from eye to eye. So it’s really not a 2x jump going from mono to stereo. I think it’s quite feasible to run 60 in stereo for Morpheus on PS4,” he explained.

Given that the device is still in prototype phase and a long development cycle is still in store, there is a lot of scope of improvement.
PlayStation games that Sony should introduce to their upcoming VR headset.

Technology has paved way for a lot of things, quite a lot of them unimaginable. Starting with the the expensive vacuum tube computers used by scientists, and coming to the infinitely more capable microprocessors present in everyday things, we have come a long way in defining the role of technology in our lives. The gaming industry has always been one of the most fervid adopters of new technology and as a result of the same, we get to witness the few of the most brilliant technologies that have been introduced by humanity. The latest in the line? Virtual reality.

Given, that virtual reality had been present for quite a while before now, but it had never quite been capable of attracting as many eyeballs as it does now. This immersive way of multi-media interaction found its way into gaming a handful of years back but only now has it truly shown itself. This first came to the front with Oculus Rift, an upcoming virtual reality headset. Now competition is hard to kill in this day and age.

And so, we already have a number of competitors not far behind. Valve was quick to say that they will be coming with a headset of their own and now Sony has taken up the call by announcing that they will introduce their virtual reality headset. With a console as good as the PS4, there ought to be some sweet games that should take advantage of the virtual reality headset. Here’s a bunch of PlayStation games that should make it to the list of virtual reality compatibility for Sony’s upcoming headset.

Note: This list consists of multiplatform games and is not only limited to exclusive titles.

15. FIFA 14

Fifa is one annual series that everyone look forward to. EA manages to outdo themselves year after year with every subsequent titles and it is heartening to watch them bring more realism and dynamism to the game. What better way to make it a virtual reality compatible game. Sony could really step things up for the franchise with its already huge fanbase on the existing consoles. What really makes the prospect worth looking into is the Be A Pro mode.

This feature has proven its mettle over the years and could prove to be one of the best ways to experience a match if FIFA titles become virtual reality headset compatible. With the camera following around your player in the field with the roaring crowd, every goal you score would be breathtaking moment. I see a lot of potential in this but EA Sports will need to work hard to make bring greater realism to the game if they wish to make the truly immersive.

New details for PS4's VR Headset revealed.

Unless you are living under the rock, Sony have announced their entry into the world of Virtual Reality. They announced their project yesterday during the ongoing Game Developers Conference. Following up our story yesterday, we have a got few more tid-bits regarding the VR headset.

Studio Technical Director at Ubisoft, Gregory Garcia who was able to get his hands on the Sony’s new tech has revealed new information. First of all he revealed that the screen’s latency is good but it seemed pixelized. “Screen latency is good but a bit pixelized. Pretty cool PSMove usage on Castle,” he tweeted.

Damien Kieken, who works at Ubisoft Montreal also found the situation to be similar when compared to Oculus Rift. “The screen quality is good but you can still see the pixel like with the Oculus Rift (haven’t tried the HD one).”

Kieken mentioned that even though the device itself is comfortable to wear users can still see the ground below. “So, here is my Morpheus demo debrief. It’s quite comfortable and easy to adjust. Immersion wasn’t perfect: was still able to see the ground.”

He also mentioned that in one of the demos there was no feeling of motion sickness. “Immersion is quite cool, even more with the pad mimicking your arm. As soon as the shark attacks the cage, everything is moving but not you.”

“…So it’s quite weird and breaking your immersion. I’m subject to motion sickness but didn’t felt it here which is great,” he said.

There is no release date and price announced for the headset yet. Stay tuned for more news and updates.
