In September 2012, Sony launched the slimmer version of the PlayStation 3, which apparently has been received well by the consumers according to the press release we got a few moments back. Cumulative number of software titles for PS3 has now  reached 3,590 with more than 595 million units sold worldwide.

The PlayStation 3 was first launched in November 2006 with two SKUs priced at a hefty $499 and $599. Some analysts believed that it won’t even sell a million. But now here we are, six years later- Sony must be pretty pleased with how things have unfolded for them. Their 10 year plan seems to be track and I won’t be surprised if they managed to sell a 100 million units by the end of that period.

It has been confirmed that last year’s super successful Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood will be released on PlayStation Network Europe for a price tag of £23.99/€29.99. Ten avatars will also be released along with the game, Ezio and Harelquin included, each for £0.40/€0.49. These avatars, however, will be exclusively available to PS Plus members. The game will be hitting PSN on August 3rd, that is tomorrow, and will be free with a purchase of AC:B HDD.

Assassin’s Creed II will also see a 20% price cut, with all the DLC included. The original Assassin’s Creed will see a 50% price chop. These two offers, however, are only in place for PlayStation Plus members.

Sony is planning to launch a PlayStation Plus exclusive Resistance 3 multiplayer demo.

“If you’ve checked out the US Blog, you will see that the R3 multiplayer demo will be accessible to SOCOM: Special Forces (aka SOCOM 4) purchasers in North America,” European Product Manager Elliott Linger said on the EU PS Blog.

“In PAL, this demo will be opened up to PlayStation Plus subscribers at exactly the same time – additional info (such as how and when) will be unveiled in due course.”

Sega has announced that a playable demo of their upcoming game, Yakuza 4, will be hitting the PlayStation Network February 16th for PlayStation Plus users, and a week later for regular PSN members.

The demo will let you play as any of the four playable characters in the game.

Sony recently revealed at their CES 2011 keynote conference that 60 million users have now joined their online gaming service, PlayStation Network. Sony confirmed at last year’s CES that PSN had hit the 38 million mark, and a few months later in June, they confirmed that number has climbed up to 50 million. That’s some steady growth.

An hour later, Microsoft announced at their conference that not only had their Xbox 360 console sold over 50 million units and 8 million Kinects in just 2 months, they also announced that 30 million people had now signed up to Xbox Live.

Well, PSN is free after all, and it more or less gives the same experience as XBL. Plus, there’s two systems with PSN on them, so you have to give Sony that benefit. Still, they do have double the amount of people on their network as compared to Microsoft.

Online services should not be paid- lesson learnt. Microsoft, we’re looking at you.

Ubisoft has announced that the multiplayer beta for Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood is now available to all US PlayStation Network Plus members.

The latest firmware upgrade for the PS3 system hits 29th June, and it will be a mandatory install in order to be able to subscribe to Playstation Network Plus, Sony’s paid online service that gives subscribers access to exclusive contecnt such as wallpapers, DLC, games and demoes and more.
